N42/N46 Timing: VANOS locked vs unlocked

Жыл бұрынExhaust VANOS adjustment unit is locked, while the intake VANOS adjustment unit is unlocked on a BMW N42/N46 engine.
When the locking pin is engaged, the wire drops to about 15mm, when the locking pin is not engaged it drops only to 10mm.

I have a N55 and getting a code for both intake and exhaust camshaft not in locking position, fault code 002DB0. Does this mean that both my vanos are unlocked and that’s what’s causing this code to Pop up?

Fair question:) This is just an example of unlocked and locked VANOS units and how to check with a piece of wire. VANOS units should always be locked before doing the timing. More info on that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipiknKyHs7GagWw.html

@@BimmerZenso, i have rough idle in my e46 N42B20 engine - > if i take my valve cover off and check the vanos wheels (obviously when cold) should these units be locked, or unlocked? Is it possible to lock or unlock the wheels when timing chain is on and set?
