It's more like he avoided the blade and knocked the body of the sword to deflect it. Hakkai is also a damn good martial art master.

I remember watching this every night back in 2nd grade (I'm not sure how I managed to get the story while watching it in Japanese but somehow that was enough lol). Realizing that now I'm already a college senior I felt sad all of a sudden....

いやあ。何と懐かしい。当時は小学生高学年でしたが、そのころは「放送していたから、分けもわからずなんとなく見てた」という感じでしたが、今成長して改めて見てみると凄いカッコいい！！

They don't have any remake. But it's series keeps ongoing with different title. Saiyuki Reload, Saiyuki Reload Blast and Saiyuki Reload Zeroin.

Hands down, Saiyuki is probably the most underrated shonen action anime of the early 2000s. I really wish people looked more into it, you don't see too many shonen anime who are able to pull off a story like this and feel relevant, something Dragon Ball (Also based on the same legend) tried to accomplish but ultimately failed at once Dragon Ball Z ruined all that Dragon Ball worked to establish. Saiyuki is what Dragon Ball could have been if it stirred away from adding unnecessary things like aliens, time travel, clones, and androids. Granted, I do like DBZ for it being so cheesy and stupid it's good, but I found even its predecessor to be out shined by the level of popularity this sequel has; which isn't really right. I recommend Saiyuki to those who actually really like the first Dragon Ball series and wanted more of the mystical journey to the west represented in Dragon Ball, I assure that you won't be disappointed! ^w^

The thing is Dragon Ball wasnt supposed to be a shonen journey to the west retelling like Saiyuki is basically, it may of been inspired by it and its 1st arc definently was a retelling in some ways but Dragon Ball branched off in ways that were natural enough what was already established minus aliens and I wouldnt call that a failure at all.

Tbh, not a single work of art is ever a failure. To FAIL means to have a First Attempt In Learning. And of course art is subjective. I love both renditions of Journey to the West! Each has its own charms!
