We all have some facial hair that we need to get rid of, tackle, shave, laser, epilate and wax - so here is an honest, open and very funny video of my good friend Emma Guns (of the brilliant Emma Guns Podcast) telling us all about her journey with PCOS and how it has caused her to suffer from facial hair, and all of the ways that she tackles it.
She is funny, open and brutally honest and shaves and lasers and epilates live.
Here are her favourite gadgets - and my all time gold standard.

I absolutley loved listening to Emma in this video and the thinnng hair videos. I find her absolutley adorable and so fun to listen to, could listen all day long. I have PCOS and all the things Emma mentioned and my GP doesnt take me seriously at all and I think until you can hold their hand and give them a bout of what you are going through so they can feel for themselves they will not understand. Emma you are stunning depsite how you feel sometimes dealing with all that.

I am so sad the video ended. I have been listening to Emma’s podcast for about a month now (started with episode one and trying to catch up to the most recent ones) and absolutely fell in love with her voice and character. Wow you both are so natural in front of a camera and I love the friendship you share. Please get her to do more videos with you? I thoroughly enjoyed these videos so much.

So pleased this subject has been discussed openly. I’ve always been hairy and now I’m 50 it’s getting even worse. All the teen mags I used to read (Jackie & Blue Jeans 😉) used to warn us girls in the 70s and 80s NEVER to remove our facial hair otherwise we would end up with coarse men’s stubble. I suffered with a moustache for years before I dare try waxing. It’s fabulous that we now have the tools and knowledge to get rid of facial hair which can really knock your confidence. Thanks for sharing Emma. You’re not alone!

I was cracking up laughing, when Emma talked of the car mirror. There is no mirror in the world as powerful as a car mirror! 😆 Date a man with a bread, absolute stroke of genius!!!! I have used an epilator on my legs, underarms and bikini line for over 30 years. Now have no hair on my underarms, the odd one or two on my legs and the occasional one on my bikini line. The first time is the most painful, after that, merely uncomfortable, due to the hair growing in cycles. Once a week is usually enough to keep smooth. Highly recommend!

Dear Nadine and Emma: Don't fear the epilation!..I use it, wherever. One becomes used to it, after three or four goes, in that particular area. Becoming 'used to it', means that the nerves in your skin don't feel it, anywhere near, like the first few times, of using the epilator. And the skin is so baby soft! The trick is to purchase the right epilators, for the different parts of the body. By right, I mean the best makes, and the also the size, in relation to the part/s of the body. When epilating, you must apply a certain pressure, otherwise it will be painful. For the face, I use a battery powered XD-3007 facial epilator. It isn't that strong, but I am the same colouring as Nadine, and therefore do not suffer from course, dark, hair. For the body, I use Emjoi....different sizes for different parts of body. Every girl should start with an epilator, and then it probably wouldn't be that painful, in the beginning. Emma, please, please, stop the shaving, and the plucking, epilation is so much easier, long lasting, and eventually permanent. In saying that, I do agree, also, that the laser is long lasting, and eventually permanent. Laser only works on dark hair. Electrolysis is also permanent. Epilation works on all hair, it is inexpensive, but it is something that only the person with the hair, must apply to themselves. I am certified, degreed, skin therapist.

OH! I finally have found someone else who shares my "love" (if there was ever such a thing) for epilating! In between the daily tweezing on the face and waxing bikini area and eyebrows, I have an epilator for chin, neck, cheeks & sideburns. Then I have another epilator for legs and (deep breath) bikini area. And I agree, you do get used to the feeling similar to what occurs when you are getting a tattoo 😉

I have PCOS and after having my son, the situation was beyond camouflage. Full-on thick black beard all along my jaw and neck. I tried everything. IPL did absolutely nothing. Zero. I just plucked every day, which resulted in loosened neck skin after a few years. In the end, I shaved it all off and a few days in, I did electrolysis. It hurts only the first three times I think, but you can apply a cream beforehand that numbs the area, then it's not even annoying. I did it every few weeks and a year later, I'm completely hair-free. Of course, after three to four months you're already at the stage where you don't mind growing them out because they are so much thinner and blonder. Please try electrolysis if your facial hair is due to hormonal reasons, it's an annoying process but it's the only thing that works. Even laser was a waste of money.

naz kousar you'll be done in about a year's time if you do your monthly sessions. The sessions here in Greece are about 50 euros each, but then get a lot cheaper (15 euros) as your session after about the third treatment are significantly shorter : you have fewer hairs sprouting out every time but also thinner and lighter, which means a much quicker treatment.

naz - I'm getting it done at the moment and my beautician has recommended at least 8 sessions because they do grow back, just lighter each time they're zapped. I have quite sensitive skin and not a great pain threshold so I find it painful, especially on the top lip, but everyone has different pain thresholds so you may not find it so. No matter, it really works brilliantly, far better than anything else to permanently remove hair. It costs me €30 for a 30 minute session- I'm in Ireland.

OMGoodness, why have i never come across your channel before?!! This is a wonderful video ladies, thanks tonnes. I have always had a slightly darker tash, growing up I kinda put it to the back of my head as I found it was all consuming. The thing that got me worse when I was late teens was the bikini line and my armpits, so I ended up getting laser hair removal at a clinic and after twelve sessions on each it really made a difference ( this was about 15 years ago) the bikini line has never grown back fully and neither the armpit hair but it's grown back sparsely but tbh I am happily married and hubby has seen me give birth to both our sons, so there's no shame. Now our youngest started school a year ago so, I have been looking into my beauty type things, because, well I can, I never bothered when they were super little as I had even worse skin than I have now and I was just too occupied with being at home with the kids. Here's the clincher, my mother dearest and nan went through the menopause at 39, I'm 38 in a couple of months and for the last 3 or so years, there have been certain symptoms that could suggest peri-menopause , more recently, my tash hairs are coming up darker and I have sprouted a few more too, there have been sprouters on my chin. My peach fuzz on the sides of my face and down the neck etc is still pale atm so I am not too fussed about it but the tash has really been bothering me lately. I would love to get the at home laser, but that'll be a save up kinda thing. I seriously think it's down to hormone changes ( not that it shows up on hormone blood tests till right before you hit menopause as I hear it). I am really going to try my damndest to save for the at home laser though, because I was so impressed from laser hair removal from years back that an at home one would be proper lush!! Loved this open chat about it though, it needs to be done more thoughout society, let's face it, we're all human!! xXx

Nadine, when you are speaking to the hierarchy at Boots (or any high street store), can you PLEASE enlighten them about the eyebrow style razors. The shelves are stacked high with useless razors and I have yet to find the useful sort in any store!!!! At the moment, I am struggling to find them online in the UK (the link above included!). Hats off to Emma for being brave enough to speak about it in the public domain, be proud that you will help others by doing so. I cannot understand why GPs seem to dismiss PCOS so easily, surely it is worth dealing with earlier rather than later? oxox

Surprised you didn't mention electrolysis. I'm currently having electrolysis treatment on my chin and upper lip and it's the ONLY thing that's worked to permanently get rid of hairs completely. Quite painful but I don't care because it works so well. I stupidly started plucking hairs many years ago and of course they came back darker and stronger to the point you could see them obviously with the naked eye, and I was sick of shaving every day so I'm getting electrolysis now. Worth every penny/cent. I had IPL laser done a few years ago but it never gets rid of the lighter colour hairs and I'm dark blonde. They also won't use lasers on moles but WILL do with electrolysis, another advantage.

Emma please get tested for PCOS if you haven't already. I have PCOS and it doesn't just give you the annoying excess facial hair. It also affects how you process sugar and makes you prone to diabetes and heart disease. There is a long list of side effects like trouble losing weight, irregular periods, trouble getting pregnant. It is treatable so it's good to see a doctor to see if they can help reduce your symptoms. Take care.

Medical Grade IPL works. The IPL you get in a normal salon won't cut it. You need the more powerful machines, run by nurses and medics. Once every 2 weeks for your first 2 sessions, then 4 weeks apart. I had 4 sessions on my legs and they've been hair free for 6 years, then started coming back very sparse. I had my whole nether regions done as a Brazilian, with IPL, I've hardly got a hair there and the hair between my thigh crease never grew back. I had really thick, tree stump hair, with two or three black hairs in each pore, even my breasts had dark hair, it was soul destroying. I spent every penny I had on hair removal, nothing spent on holidays, clothes etc. But it was worth it! Get this done before you're 50, ladies, you won't regret it.

@@blaizekcivon7831 hello💖 it can only be administrated by a Nurse or Dr. The IPL used is much stronger than that found in a high street beauty salon in the UK but not as damaging as a high powered laser is in the wrong hands. Hope this helps, I am no medic but spent a long time finding something that worked on my very thick, three hairs to a pore problem!

I am not talking about mustache removal, or women who are concerned with bothersome hair as Emma is. Dermaplaning/shaving is the best. I do entire face, forehead, nose, cheeks, everything with those little pastel razors that come in a 3 pack. Once every couple of weeks is plenty, regrowth is slow and not terribly prickly with the vellous hair. Plus I'm getting excellent exfoliation at the same time, loads of dead skin comes off! Sideburns might be pretty prickly though.

Weird experiences for me - 2/3rds of my hair fell out when I developed Lupus. Kevin Murphy hair products (also biotin) got me 1/3 back so happy with that. But virtually all my eyebrows went from really thick to barely there. I started taking biotin every day and my eyebrows are back but so is the hair on my lip and sideburns. Unsure what to do. I am so relieved at getting my eyebrows back I pretty much ignore the rest. The baby hairs all over my head making me want to rejoice :-)

I’m now perimenopausal, with all the joys that hormonal chaos brings. I have a number of dark chin hairs now. I can’t afford treatments or home lasers so it’s plucking ahoy. What’s plucking annoying is that I get spots where the hairs are growing through, so now my chin/jaw looks like a teenage boy’s....😡

Loved your segment. I have also used all of the above hair removals. Love the epilator and have a wonderful product me flashing light that is permanent and does all hair types and skin types. If you have tried everything and nothing works try the braun epilator and the me, it guarantees permanent hair removal on all hair types and I love it. Good job ladies...look forward to watching more videos.

Emma for permanent removal of facial hair forget relying on shaving, plucking, waxing, DIY laser, find a good electrologist with up to date equipment. You will not regret it. Go to the Hairtell.com lots of info.

A Poster mentioned using Spearmint Capsules. What a great idea! 😊 PCOS is actually Insulin Resistance, so it makes sense that a natural anti-Testosterone, in this case the Spearmint, would work to reduce the hair growth. Natural Progesterone can also help with slowing or stopping unwanted hair growth ... It may also help reverse hair loss. A diet that lowers insulin levels, such as the Ketogenic diet, or even a Vegan-Keto diet would keep insulin levels low enough to lower hormone levels in both PCOS sufferers and those going through Menopause or peri-menopause. Nothing beats a Try ... and going very low carb Keto for a month or two may also help with regulating monthly menstrual cycles in the premenopausal women. And also slow down hair loss. Love the Video! Appreciate all the women who commented on What Works/Didn't Work. So helpful ❤

I’ve been using Silk’n Flash & Go which acts the same exact way with the Philips machine you have. It also has five levels and needs full contact with the skin before it will flash. It was C$300 and fits in the size of my hand. It’s slowed down my hair growth a little bit. I suspect it’ll take half a year before I’m satisfied with the results.

I think I still carry emotional scars from my facial hair. I was in my 30’s before I finally had the money to afford electrolysis, which did take care of the problem. Even in menopause , it is nothing like it was then. What I did not know, until the electrolysis people pointed it out, what that I had a hormone imbalance. Please tell younger women with a lot of hair to get tested because it can be corrected and then the hair, once removed, will stay away.

Lesley Goldberg Did electrolysis work for you? Please answer, this condition is giving me an anxiety, sometimes I don’t leave my house for days due to this condition. I’m definitely going to do electrolysis, but I’m afraid that it gives me burns or permanent scarring.

Hi Nadine.... A question about the Phillips IPL. I have had the IPL done in the Day Spa...... They have also used it for sun damage and pigmentation. Does the Phillips Lumea work for that as well? It sounds like the same thing I have done in the Skin Spa.....

Nadine - can you please add a warning for IPL: A caution for those who have dark freckles, moles, darker lips, etc - DO NOT IPL on top of those! You will burn your skin. You can use a white/nude eyeliner pencil to cover them up before hand. I have burned my moles and it is really painful!

Love this video, Nadine and Emma! - how refreshingly honest. It’s about time we talked about this, openly. It must affect so many women. What about using acids and retinol alongside the Philips IPL? I’m sure the instructions on mine advised not to use acids in the week before using the gadget (iirc?) What do you do, Nadine? Do you stop using acids in the week before using it? And does it make melasma brown spots worse? And - we need more info on your 30x mirror please!

I despise all those supposedly cheap lil face razors.... for the past 5 years I have been using an expensive men’s 3 to 4 blade razor every other day (with a thin coating of face balm..... all of my face, neck, upper lip, chin, nose (yes that fuzz down my nose) forehead!!! I have the smoothest face that accepts all products remarkably well! ..... I also use a Phillips men’s nose trimmer for ears and nose! Works wonders, easy, no cuts, no bleach, etc!!!!! Awesome!!!!! Seriously solves every issue!!!!

But for me it something really upsetting and I think that is only one thinkg what other people will see 😵 and yes, I do use face shavers. But I think that Philips device maybe a solution 😊 I'm glad that there are other ladies with same problems

So it lock down, I have been getting my top lip waxed every 4 months for 7 years costing about £45 a year, I have just bought some facial wax strips for 99p .. it still hurt the same but I am so happy, the pack has enough to do it for the next 3 years 😃 I must say my upper lip isn't bad I just don't like how makeup sits on it or fake tan darkens the hair. But still that's £119 saved for the next 3 years.
