Why? I'm running through youtube search trying to understand this weapon.
@ShinKyuubi4 жыл бұрын
@@Blaisem It's mostly cause outside of certain schools it's very much a little seen weapon. Heck the most recent media depiction of a person using one is Kurama Yashamaru in the 2019 Samurai Shodown game. Since so few people even see the weapon, not a whole lot of people really know how to use it. A good example is Skallagrim who did a video on it. Yes he is more about the European martial arts and thus more familiar with a broad sword or the like than a Katana but he has done tatami cuts with a katana so he knows how to do that. The length of the handle for the Nagamaki threw him way off on how to use it, he only got one clean cut with it and had trouble replicating it.

First time i've ever seen a nagamaki in action and i gotta say it's heavily misrepresented and underrated! To call it a "sword" is a disservice with the way it functions a lot more like polearm such as a european short spear than anything. It's like a shorter but more nimble naginata!
@88gschannel394 жыл бұрын
In the KZfaq search for the Nagamaki, one dude also described it as similar to the longsword nodachi but with a longer handle to help with the handling a swinging. The only "sword" where you can swap hand positions on the hilt.

He's trying his hardest to show every single step of the moves, ofc his footwork and how slowly he's moving the heavy weapons I presume(?) is gonna take a toll. It just gives you a glimpse of how these things would've worked back in the days. I mean I never would've thought the back curved part of the naginata can deflect and turn a sword all the way in whatever direction you wan and then stab/slash so I believe this video is decent

@StevDoesBigJumps Жыл бұрын
@@chezmanbreeeds521 In european halberd practices you mostly only choke up with the front hand as increase leverage whilst not sacrificing attack range. I mean yes, the rear end is effectively a staff, but against armour it's not nearly as useful as the head. As for spears, well most uses were line battle, and being able to keep the enemy at bay whilst not being stabbed yourself is key.

Very sloppy stance. Lack of energy. Sloppy hits without pronounced stops. Very stupid opponents that would just run straight into you with no guard or regards for their own life. You -do not- spin a weapon around, -especially not- in one hand. It was very visible how weak that was and it should be obvious that it is. The opponent should have just hit it out of the hand. If there weren't the completely useless stuff like spinning around and the obvious attempt at trying to make it look cool instead of doing it properly, I wouldn't have cared.
@brandorgraccus66535 жыл бұрын
You might realise it is a démonstration, not a fight: meaning none of what you may call opponent: aware, on guard etc. I mean, I'm cap obvious here, but nvmd
@brandorgraccus66535 жыл бұрын
And I havn't seen a single fancy spinning. And the sloppiness has explication. Climate. I've travelled to two distinct area, so I can tell the warm up is much easier in hot countries (Japan is), and there appearently in cold one, so i wouldn't blame their lack of heat. Also, will you blame a mannuel for not being enought dynamique ? The same applies here imo
