In this video, I am unboxing and reviewing the Nagual by Nagualep - a countertop electric kitchen scrap composter that will turn your kitchen scraps into compost/fertilizer and under 5 hours! Let's put it to the test and see what the hype is all about.
You can find the Nagual here (affiliate):
amzn.to/3KRl6gB
Interesting article discussing kitchen composters:
www.gardenmyths.com/electric-...
And this video showing what using the by products directly will do for your plants:
• WARNING: Compost from ...
__________________________________________________________________
Disclaimer: All opinions are my own, though backed up by other reviewers and gardening experts. I was not financially compensated for this review. Nagualep sent me this product to try and to provide a fair review. A fair review is one that is honest and uses various sources of information, also readily available, to confirm and or back up opinions made in this video. I want to be very clear; I do not believe this machine makes ready to use compost for your garden and that is my opinion. All material coming out of this machine is sterilized and essentially dead. What it does is dehydrate your food waste and make it smaller. I am still trying to figure out one single applicable use for this process. Kitchen electric composters do not make compost, they shred and dehydrate food scraps. That's it. If you love your garden and you want bountiful harvests year after year, no machine will create compost for you and certainly not in 5 hours. A compost pile will do that, but it will take months and months with hard work forking the pile over.

Thank you. I did a lot of research for that one and I am very upset some creators ooh and aah over it, without looking into it first. It s not all about affiliate links! I want to be a good gardener and I want to learn, this is not compost. Scientists say it s not compost, gardeners say it s not compost, and despite government requests to prove it is compost, companies (not just this one) have failed to provide evidence. So there is that.

I was so waiting for someone to make a review of a composter ! Excellent thank you Sofia! I had been tempted for a couple of years to purchase one but wasn’t sure about it yet. On a side note: seeing little mama Electra limp made my heart melt. I have a furry mama who is about her age but has the same lipoma issues as Le Chiffre and it is always so hard to see our little sweethearts grow older. A big hug to her and you ❤

Hmm, I've had an outdoor [back yard] compost pile of various styles for 4 decades [the neglect/no maintain type] and have never had any bad odors from it, nor critters -- and in a city with ridiculous ordinances with outrageous fines and several Gladys Kravitz-type nearby neighbors. At most it smelled of freshly mowed grass when turned over on rare occasion. The only critters it attracted was neighbors' cats allowed outdoors who liked to lounge atop the pile of leaves because they loved the warmth it generated on cooler evenings in the autumn.

Thank you for the review. It was interesting, though I had no plans for getting one regardless. I have seen a previous review or demo earlier of a “composter” using the same principle. I live in Iowa and bought a tumbler last year. It can handle much more volume. I got it towards the end of the season, so it will be interesting to see how much compost I can generate. By the way, you can buy a lot of compost for $500! I think your assessment/ review was right in target.

I haven’t had a backyard compost pile for years as it attracted mice. Also our city has a composting program. I do find it handy to use my Vitamix to pulverize my egg shells and food scraps. I then pour that directly into my garden…it breaks down very quickly. No need for another appliance. Of course, that is not possible during the six months we are frozen solid here in Calgary. Love your channel.

Hello. I use bokashi, since I am a balcony gardener (I've been using it for getting on 3 years, and I'm loving it). From what I know and what I've seen, a balanced compost pile really shouldn't smell bad and you don't have to turn it all the time. It's depending on the size and location, but other factors too, probably. Oh, and Mark from SelfSufficientMe is Australian. Fabulous channel, great videos - I highly recommend him to all ppl interested in learning about gardening, growing vegetables and a lot of plant based jokes ;)

@@mygreatchallenge sorry the machine didn't deliver on its promises. Hopefully you'll find some use for it (if you use dried, blended eggshells as a slow-release, long-term calcium source in your garden, maybe the machine could do that? Not that one needs a special machine, but since you've already got one...). Thanks for being so thorough and honest in your reviews. Much appreciated. Greetings from Switzerland!

I think that while it may not be an ideal composter to make "black gold", it still keeps things from the landfill. Because even your food scraps become toxic. I think the biggest takeaway is that this isn't a "soil in one cycle" product, it may be a way to minimize by your compost footprint and food waste from ending up in a landfill. Thanks for the great review!

A well-built and maintained compost pile should not smell bad. I layer my green/kitchen waste with torn up cardboard and cover with cardboard and weigh it down. You need layers of green and brown waste. I do not put any meat/protein in my bin as that encourages rodents and, to be honest, I don't turn my compost. I do have 2 compost bins made of pallets so I can rotate their use.

Yes. I am not the only one debunking the claim. It s not compost, it s dead dehydrated kitchen scrap. I believe the California dpt of agriculture is putting a lawsuit against all companies making similar machines to have them retract the compost claim because it is not compost and should not be used on plants. Compost is a 1-1-1 ratio this is way above that and will burn all roots and kill your plants.

Sophia, I bury kitchenscraps in my garden, the proces then takes place in the ground. It attracts worms, that work your ground. And all the good stuff will be in the ground and is not being touched except by roots from plants and so on. I make it deep enough to plant on top of it. No extra work. Just that moment you bury it. And you can do this only before the vegetable season or all your long and also in a flower garden. It depends on your location, your garden and room to dig etc. When I first moved here I dug small ditches and filled them with kitchenscarps and leaves and stuff. When one was done, I dug one right beside the other one and so on. Now I save scraps and about once a week or two, I dig a hole where I can in my garden en put it in. I dig holes about 30 to 40 cm deep. It feeds the ground and also helps with keeping the soil moist. I do this in large containers too. I put kitchenscraps at the botom and clippings and so on. Sometimes the dead annuals from last year. It saves on filling it up with new soil aswell, as I also try to reuse it Eggshells and coffee grounds, I also spread on top of the garden. If you dry the eggshells for a week, you can just crush them in small peaces by hand and you will hardly notice it when you spread them in the garden or in pots. Try to mimic what nature does. Now ofcourse it doesnt bury leaves, but it does grow untop of the old stuff. Try to think simple ... using electricity to make compost ... ??? They try to make everything cost money that way. ( English is not my native language, incase I wrote a wrong word or sentence)
@mygreatchallenge
@mygreatchallenge Жыл бұрын
That is what I did with my raised bed. Native Americans do that, they put food and fish at the bottom of the ditch before planting.

Not sure if I do things the "right way" but for years I have an old food processor JUST for making my "compost" I take thee banana peels, veggies, egg shells .. NO MEAT IN THERE ... I keep in the fridge if necessary. I grind it up in the food processor .. then take outside and add to the garden or compost pile .. cover with a little dirt and everything "decomposes" very quickly. :)

Thank you for this review. As a composter for 20+ years I was curious how this worked. I mainly compost in the summer/fall season and thought this might work for the winter months. Yes, destroying the beneficial's the soil needs is is not good; you need the worms to break down the matter and leave their poop behind.

My only idea is if you live in an area like an apartment that has a community garden and compost pile then maybe this could help so you could make less trips to the compost pile. But again the rapid heating process of it is not great for the organic matter.

Would this speed up the composting process though? Like if you added this material to one of those compact, rolling barrel type composters, or whatever, with some regular soil, would it break down faster? And it compacts the scraps, so could you fit more in the composter at a time? I mean, would it speed things up a bit? Composting your own scraps is definitely worth looking into...

Thank you for being so honest!!! In spite of what you can read further on I have considered the idea of a faster way to good compost. In regards to composting in a small garden: years ago my municipality gave away free compost bins. For the first several years I didn’t really use it, but since the famously ‘popular’ epidemic l have used it for almost all my garden waste and all my kitchen waste(I do not eat meat, but do eat fish. As it is rodent safe you can put a small amount of bread, cheese or meat into it, but generally no such matter is good in a suburban area as it can smell. With only garden waste and vegetable waste it does NOT SMELL). It takes about two years to compost with the help of composting worms and I have to water it from time to time. But it does NOT smell and it makes a good top dressing. I stir it from time to time when I remember, probably something like once every second month when it’s not freezing… Hot composting has supposedly much higher nutrient and is definitely much faster(a few months!), but does take a bit more space and time. I live in Denmark and l am so lucky that I can choose to have all my kitchen waste picked up in a separate bin (every 2 weeks) plus my garden waste either at my house (4 times a year) or I can deliver it myself at the recycling centre where I can also pick up as much free compost as I like; made from the above ☺️Plus free composting worms in the spring in case the ones from last year have left me… As always; thank you for a great and not only helpful but also very personal and thoughtful video.

When wheelie bins for garbage get damaged the city would convert them to compost bins, they'd drill lots of 2 inch holes for air circulation, take off the lid, and I believe they sold for $5. You'd put the wheelie bin upside down and put the lid on what was previously the bottom (the wheels removed, and the bottom cut off) to keep out any bird and/or cats. I'd fill mine with dry leaf litter layered with green refuse from my yard (trimming from my shrubs, clippings from trees, etc.). I'm not one to turn and water often, but like you I'd do it every 2 or 3 months. It takes a year for the refuse to decompose, but I had the most beautiful flower garden using compose I made. I used only dried leaves and green clippings and my compost bins didn't have any smell.
