Oh btw, @ 23:00 I have a background in acoustic engineering. In acoustics we just call them harmonics instead over overtones, but they are the same thing. They are present in anything, the most simple way to explain it, is that they are just a sum of sine waves which are an even or odd multiplication of the first harmonic (root). Any combination can be made with these sine waves, incl square waves, triangles waves etc. How many harmonics/overtones there are depends per instrument as well as the height or strength of these overtones. It's this unique combination in combination with same additional things like reverb, that give an instrument sound unique. For digital instruments they mimic these overtones (and do a very good job of it in the last few years imo). There is a great book about this that covers the bridge between music and acoustics, without getting to deep into the physics and math, if you're interested I can look it up.

The disconnect with overcomplicating theory is not only a thing for music schools. I have a background in engineering, and just the amount of math, and mostly doing things manually by hand is just insane. Like stuff that not one single engineer ever needs in his entire career. I also noticed that a lot of students and interns I coach these days all get stuck there. I always tell them to focus on relationships and context, instead of the hardcore math. Personally I think the same thing goes for music theory as well. I think I said it before, but it's another example where the tool becomes the goal.

Nice ! I really like your "react" long vidéos! Very interesting and entretaining too. I agree with most of your points. I have a question for you : what would be the fonction of a triad on the fifth degree in your system (GBD without the F )? According to your définitions it would be tonic which is strange but fun. I know it never occur in jazz but just want to know what you think. Thanks !

Thanks, I had that question before! It is important to understand that I purely think about theory from a jazz perspective! So, it's all 4 note chords including the choice between maj7 and 6 for the tonic!

I think Barry Harris has been quoted as saying that sixth-diminished was "made for guitar," speaking figuratively, of course. Thomas Echols and Chris Parks have done wonderful things with his harmonic ideas...and Roni Ben-Hur! and many others!

Of course! Don't forget Pasquale Grasso. But I come from the gypsy jazz scene and in that style most players have a completely different view of the guitar neck. There's not one correct way, I just prefer the gypsy jazz way, even to play other styles!

@@ChristiaanvanHemert Love your playing, and completely agree. Just mentioning for everyone else's benefit. Would love to get some lessons sometime! not in that position right now, but I really admire your playing a lot.

Consonance or Dissonance are not subjective, and shouldn't really be applied to chords. It's best used to describe intervals and do not vary depending on "context." A dissonant interval will always be dissonant regardless or style or cultural association.
