I love it when the guest's enthusiasm and excitement for these scriptures are so apparent. These men and women have spent years studying. Their affection for scripture can hardly be contained. They're like a kid in a candy store.

“The simple-hearted folk of Ephraim” description (1:02 or so) is delightful. “I have found that it is the small everyday deed of ordinary folks that keeps the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love.” J.R.R. Tolkien Thanks for all the insights!

...and the chapter heading, "Nahum speaks of the burning of the earth@the Second Coming, & of the mercy & power of the LORD," tells me people of OUR day are in the same straits...

This is the first come follow me commentary I’ve seen that isn’t too scripted or just downright weird (Utah-culture-shock). It feels like a natural conversation with relatable people that’s insightful without going too far into the weeds. Thanks for your work!! I’ll make sure to spread the word to my friends.

Great information to understand nahum! I was frustrated with no verses mentioned when you were changing discussions from one verse to another. Very hard to follow the flow.

Finding the commentaries of Habakkuk in the Dead Sea Scrolls is just one more thing to validate the bible. The bible is one of the most authentic books in the world, it has been proven archeology and historically. It is amazing how God has made His words known to us from ancient days, the bible can cleanse and sanctify you. We are redeemed by the blood that we might be cleansed by the Word. The bible is our Mirror. James uses the example of the mirror held in front of our eyes, it shows us what we are really like, it shows us our inward nature and character. When you see yourself in the mirror of God, act on what needs to be changed, the Holy Spirit is behind every word. The bible is not by the work of man, it is the work of God. If you receive it as the word of God, it will work effectively in you, because God is the author.

I think comment is interesting for one main reason which is it seems to point to the Bible as the source of salvation. As a member of the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints I recognize we can get lost in the weeds as well with the beauty of the revealed doctrine but all that we do should point is to Jesus as the Savior. The Bible does not save. Jesus saves us as we accept him and repent. I am no scholar but the new testament is full of examples where the Jewish contemporaries of Jesus didn't recognize him because they were so focused on the law and their own scripture. The law and the scriptures are of little effect without Jesus.

Do any of y’all know of the best way for me to ask any of these three men a question? Or do y’all have ideas about this: Did God ever answer Habakkuk’s question in Ch. 1 about the wicked being used as a tool for justice? Was Habakkuk’s response meaning that God wasn’t going to answer that right now? Because it seems that God’s response skips over his question and goes to the woes which don’t seem related at all.

Mariel, thank you for your wonderful question and for listening to the podcast. The answer to that question is given at first by the Lord. In Habakkuk 2:3-4, the Lord emphasizes to Habakkuk that he should not think that just because the Lord uses the wicked for justice now (or when the Babylonians will destroy the southern kingdom of Judah in 587 BC) doesn't mean that there isn't a larger purpose to using them. In v. 3 it states, "the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry." This is the Lord's way of saying, when justice is carried out by the wicked, the event will speak for itself and those who experience it will not doubt God's purposes in using the wicked to bring justice. In other words, when those who see the justice brought by the wicked they will know why it happened. In many ways, this is the message of later prophets, like Jeremiah, Lehi, and Ezekiel, they are clearly aware that the children of Israel have not lived up to their covenants and that the justice that is going to be carried out by the Babylonians is just because of their failing to live up to the covenant. In a way, Hab 2:3-4 is another way of saying what is recorded in the Book of Mormon, "if the day shall come that they will reject the Holy One of Israel, the true Messiah, their Redeemer and their God, behold, the judgments of him that is just shall rest upon them." (2 Nephi 1:10).

Yes. He answered in Habakkuk 2:4. “The just shall live by his faith.” He was told to write this down on a sign so big that someone running past could read it. And he was also told that this was an answer that must be patiently waited for. Faith requires patience. But God knows all things that are kin men’s hearts. He knows who is proud, or violent or wasted by indulgence. All will be made right by God but this outcome must be faithfully and patiently waited for. God reminds Habbakuk of his ultimate triumph over the wicked. The just person holds on to that hope by his faith. This simple formula is powerful. It was quoted three times in the New Testament. Romans 1:17. Hebrews 10:38. Galatians 3:11. Luther credited this verse with opening his eyes to the futility of certain practices of the Catholic Church to which he belonged like the selling of indulgences and certain pilgrimages that wold guarantee God’s favor. Our faith is the way to God’s favor. Habbakuk 2:4 may seem like simple words, but these 7 words were earth shaking in their effect.

So, if I'm understanding this correctly. If I wrote down the script for this podcast, burried it, and some archeologists dug it up many years later, that'd kinda be like the dead sea scrolls?

My understanding is that it is like ‘PART’ of the DSC. 40% was actual Bible text, then 30% the running of their everyday life, then 30% of commentary about the Bible text - so yes like the script for this podcast.

They are called the dead sea scrolls because they were found in caves near the dead sea. They were in clay pots, deep in a cave. The story has it that a Sheppard was looking for his goats and thought that one may have run into this particular cave, so he threw a rock into the cave and heard something break.

There isn't alot of scholarship on the Dead Sea Scrolls and their application to our lives. My favorite collection of the Dead Sea Scrolls that is easily accessible to readers is The Dead Sea Scrolls: A New Translation by Michael O Wise, Martin G. Abegg, Jr., and Edward Cook
