Naim Audio has a good following, and after the Naim Atom review, the Audiofool wasn't too thrilled with the entrance fee, but the curiosity was piqued; thanks to that fast, thrilling rhythm. The Naim NAIT 5si has that same rhythm at a lower price point, so let's get our hands dirty and check it out.
Comparisons to Schiit Ragnarok (v1) using KEF LS50 and Schiit Yggdrasil, as well as to the Schiit Aegir and Schiit Freya + using Tekton Impact Monitors in the vid.

Nice review. Thanks! What I have found is that in general the clarity, soundstage, microdetail management and speed can be noticed when the preamp stage allows it, and is not critically affected by the power stage. In orher words, the sound presentation is more related to the preamp stage than to the power stage

That is true, I do personally find that the best pre-amp is no pre-amp, but a good pre-amp can make a so-so power amp sound better.

Hi: I had the Unity Atom home but didn't like the lights and bells calling attention to itself. I am trying the Nait 5si now and while it is punchier I seemed to notice a more open top end on the Atom which is the sound I love. I listen at lower volumes on my new Elac 403's What is your take on the difference between the two ?

Hey, I have the same speakers as you do and am considering picking up an Schiit Aegir Amp. Does the low power of the Aegir amp still drive those impact monitors to decently loud levels ? Also, have you compared your YGGDRASIL to the Gungnir MB ? Thanks for your help. The videos are great.

Thanks. The Aegir is loud enough with Tekton to go past my normal listening levels. That said, if your room is large then you may need to go for monos. I haven't compared the Yggy to the Gumby yet but a lot of people say that Gumby's are near the same level at a much lower price point.

Yes, I definitely recommend everyone to listen for themselves before buying anything, despite whatever reviews they watched or read. I don't think I'm harsh though, I did say I like it, and it's really fun. It's just too forward for me without actually being resolving. Perhaps the new supernait might retain the fun and be more resolving, similar to how the Rega cleans up with each level up (brio-elexr-elicit-osiris), but with the nait 5si vs elex r - i'm hands down elex r... so maybe I am harsh lol!

Yes, they sound good with the Quad Z2. For the Z2, I would narrow the choices to the Elex and Naim as the Arcam sounds too neutral with the Z2. @TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 4 жыл бұрын
The Aegir/Freya are currently my reference amplification so all amps I review in the future will be compared to it, at least until I have a new reference. The Rag and Naim 5si are both 60w @8ohms, but this comparison is more coincidental rather than deliberate as I can only use the amps I have on hand, as I usually have to buy the amps I use for reviews. That said, I think it is more useful to compare amps based on price, as everyone will have a budget to follow, and the 5si at $2k/GBP 1k will be a hard sell considering the Ragnarok/Rega Elex-R are only $1.6k and sounds better for me. There will be some who will prefer the Naim sound sig, but they need to cough up an extra 400. Finally, I find that more wattage does not correlate to better sound, as there are a lot of low wattage amps that sound better than higher ones. For example, I find this 5si to be a better listen than an Arcam A39 120w amp as well as most cheap class D amps which easily do 100w.

Thank you for the review. I do not know the 5si what I have here is the xs2 and I also do not find it to be calling attention to details. Musical it is a lot. Voincing being how they are this amplifier till now gived me the most sence of realinzm in human voice compared to many amplifiers. What I do not like is thet midbase bump, which kindf of is a part of its overall musical presentation but to me up until now only sealed speakers did work or I had to place anythink at least 4 feet from the wall. What I love about this amp is its upper frequencies which I find to be just right. I know my last two sentences are quite oposit of what normaly is liked and not liked about naim gear:) , However rega elex - r and any other is absolutely not acceptable for me because it as only amp which I tried kind of changes some sounds, and as well as it is able to play some things realy nice it is also able to errase texture

Very surprised, are you almost recommending 20 watts as a match for LS50, the KEF's are very low sensitivity, I think 89dB for an 8 Ohm load. It would be pretty hard on that set up dont you think. I wouldn't disagree that the little Naim can be harder sounding than some others but the Ragnorak is at the other extreme in my experience it's very tame. Rega’s Elex-R is the one to beat in this price range but in the UK the Naim can be had for less than £900 GBP so puts it more in context. I also agree its not one of Naim's better amps in recent years, though you shouldn't judge Naim by this product. Try the Atom streaming Amp which does sound astonishing and my favourite bang for buck is the Super Nait 3 which I know is much more expensive but this amp shows up many esoteric mega expensive Amps out there. Oh to address some othe comments here Naim-Focal is a merger not a buy out, there is a profound difference. Neither company compromises their design philosophy in this tie up. Just wanted to redress some of the Naim hate feeding frenzy that tends to go on. Im not a Naim user currently but have owned and enjoyed some of their offerings in the past and likely will again at some point in my continuing Hi Fi journey of discovery.

Thanks for watching. The LS50's are actually 85db but for the Naim/Aegir comparison, I used the Tekton Impact Monitors at a much better 94db. Definitely if your room is large, better skip the Aegir for LS50s. You have a good ear, and your observations are correct in that the Naim and Rag are at opposite corners, and that the Elex R might be the amp to beat. I do have an Elex R review as well and I would personally just get the cheaper one (Rag in North America, Elex R in Europe). The Rag is still my preference in terms of sound, but it ultimately depends on the presentation you like. As for the Naim Atom, I also have a review on it, and actually, I like the 5si better, but that's likely because of the Yggdrasil. I have not heard the Super Nait 3, but if it serves up more refinement than I would be interested to listen to it. I didnt really notice any Naim hate frenzy... can you point me to where you read it? That would be totally unfair and I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people who like the sound sig of Naim.

The Naim house sound prioritizes macrodynamics, punch, slam... and overall a very exciting amp, and recommended for those who like that type of sound. I like it, but what's hard for me to grasp is the price. I just think that an Elex R can give you almost the same amount of excitement with a bit more improvement in some areas, at a lower price. Whether that extra cost is worth it depends on how you value that extra excitement. I had it on the whole day for the review but not 24/7.

The Naim is a very forward amp, and if it's excitement that you crave, then you will definitely like this amp. The downside of having all this forwardness is that it becomes too punchy and a lot of the minor details and overtones are harder to hear, compared to other other amps. This becomes even more apparent in complex passages. That is why I preferred the Schiit camp as while they are not so exciting, they are more balanced, and more satisfying to my ear. There will be a group of people who do not care for these microdynamics and really just prefer all of the sounds to be punchy, to this group, the naim is for them. And that is fine, but really, my main gripe is that it is too expensive at the SRP when you can have the Rega Elex R much cheaper, and while not as punchy, does get more of the overtones. But as mentioned, if you can get it for 1k USD or GBP 550 then I think it would be worth it.

That stuff is, at current prices, a big rip off. It used to be fairly important to the stability of the amplifier output stages of older Naim amplifiers, but starting with the 5i, any old piece of wire will do. Do you know what ATC, the manufacturers of some of the most transparent speakers ever sold to both home and studio environments recommend? Copper flex. No 99.9999% oxygen free, no fancy dielectric, no cryogenic treatment, no precious metal plating, just ordinary household wiring of sufficient rating.

I think the thing with both Rega & Naim is that they fair much better when matched within their respective eco- systems. Not so much the mix and match proposition that some amps can be. I imagine- don't know, that 5si would be tempered by a Naim cd player. The Elexr by Rega sources. That said, neither are as compelling at their price points in North America as they deservedly are the the UK.

Naim CD players tend to have a coloured presentation, especially at the top end of the frequency range which tends to be rolled off and lacking some detail. @@timothyfreeseha4056Thank you. I'm not a Naim hater, I've owned a series of Naim products and I've a lot of affection for the original Nait 5i for its fun and somewhat direct approach to music. But the 5 range does have quite apparent flaws. As you go up the range, the flaws become less apparent (as you would expect) and the sound becomes more "grown up" and transparent, but even then the company will mug your wallet with high priced separate power supplies in order for the products to perform as they should. And I'd still advise anyone new to the world of Naim to stay far, far away from the cultists of the official forum - arrogance, cork sniffing and pseudo science rule the roost.

You nailed the Nait sound perfectly. Might be good for rock, but lacks the finesse for just about everything else.

@@TheAudiofool The NAIT isn't a bad amp. It just doesn't convince me. Oddly, the first generation Nait (about 35 yrs ago) was really a great sounding little amp. I spent hours listening to one (along with the Linn Kans and LP12) with all sorts of music and it sounded very good. Had I not been a poor grad student, I would have bought one. I did buy a Nait 3 some years later, but it did not last long in my system. I heard the same thing you mentioned. Sometimes I think they3e talk about the PRaT to direct your listening focus away from other aspects of the sound. Back to the NAIT, I can't say the rest of the NAIM product line sounds the same.

The Audiofool ... you ain’t alone. Just that the Naim enthusiasts tend to praise it a lot more than what it really is. For the price you want something that can do details with clear sweet mids. Guess it will be good for fusion, acid jazz, rock, electronica music etc

That's how I value it, but if you really like the naim sound, shouldn't stop you from buying it as long as you've listened to amps costing $2K.

Totally disagree with this review. I have the 5si and it destroyed amplifiers nearly double the price. Detail and clarity is superb. I don't know why you say what you do about that. It's probably your speakers.

In this case I used the KEF LS50 and Tekton Impact monitors. What speakers are you using with the 5si; also what amplifiers double the price did you compare it too?

@@TheAudiofool Hi I have B&W 804s. The amps I demoedwith it was Musical Fielity M6si, Rega Elicit R, Primare I25, Arcam Sa30

@TheAudiofool 2 жыл бұрын
@@kris308100 I'd not heard the 804S but only the 804D3, but I'd probably pick the Naim as well over those choices lol. I am a bit surprised over the SA30 though, as it should have better clarity/detail based on measurements, although it is quite a boring amp for me.

@@TheAudiofool maybe it's just me but the Naim sounded streets ahead. I'm about to upgrade to the Supernait 3. That amp is awesome.

I don't this comparison myself and could not disagree with his findings enough. I found the Naim component more detailed, musically engaging and cohesive.

Thanks for watching. I actually like HR's reviews, and while he does like the 5si, he did say it was lacking in timbre which is a major factor for me. Also, he probably likes the Schiit amps more since both of these are in the Recommended components while the 5si is not.

@@TheAudiofool yes he said it was lacking at first but toward end of review, he said it was better, maybe needed to break in a bit. Also, the use of the nac a5 cables may make the difference...
