Naim Uniti Core ripper, player and UPnP server

When reviewing the Naim Uniti Atom network player the Dutch distributor Latham Audio also lent me the Uniti Core. I didn’t promise to review it but couldn’t resist looking at it. And I know now why en where the Core does have a clear value.

Hmm, and I was so wondering what it would sound like with an external dac... I wondered whether this might be a better option than the Bluesound Vault 2 / Chord Hugo... I like the Atom a lot, but made other choices along the way. Did you try it out by any chance? 😁

I' m curious about that aswell. Hope you can clarify; 1-) How clean is the pi 4 usb, since usb and network is not on a shared bus anymore. Maybe comparison to USBridge would be helpful. 2-) Current Allo products compatible or not. (Definitly needs a new case though) 3-) Pi 4 demands 3A so what power supply should we use with i2s cards? Official Rasberry smps is capable or not? Audiophonics LPSU is 2A only so please recommend a budget lpsu for pi 4. Thank you.

Allo confirmed that, Digione is compatible with pi 4 and they are working on 2 different psu's and a new metal case for digione.

Hi Hans, another great video - thanks ! Two questions: 1) once a CD has been ripped, can the resulting file be seen by MinimServer running on a Mac and therefore accessed over the internet ? And 2), if yes, could other, already existing music files be loaded onto it's HD and the Core be used as a general file server for the rest of a networked system ?

They will be seen by MinimServer when placed in the designated directory. But MinimServer can’t be approached from ste internet, as far as I know. Already existing files must be copied in the designated directory too to be seen by MinimServer.

Hans suggests that this product is most likely to be used alongside the Uniti Atom. However, I am considering replacing my Naim HDX + DAC (+XPS) with UnitiCore Server and NDX2 - partly for compatibility with DSD and higher resolution files, but also because I suspect the NDX2 is a better DAC than the older Naim DAC. And because being newer the app is better.

@@Bzz22 No, so far I've bought the NDX2 and kept my HDX as a server. I felt that the NDX2 was as good as the external nDAC, so sold the nDAC to part fund the NDX2. I hardly use the HDX now as there are higher res streams on Qobuz.

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel I 2nd that request. I'm thinking of the Nova as my ultimate streaming all in one system with Klipsch Forte 4 and svs 16 ultra. I'm disabled and a remote accessible system for 2 channel listening with a 770 VA transformer would be a dream come true !!!!!!

Hi Hans, why would one buy a Uniti Atom with Uniti Core when you could just as easily purchase a Naim Uniti Star which is basically the Atom and Core stuck together,?

Well it could be because they might have bought the Atom first then realized that they could have bought the Star instead but being stuck with the Atom all they needed to add was a Core and so bought one. I hope that makes sense.

Maybe one reason can be precisely the fact it’s not stuck together: dimensions.

Uniti Star does an internal HDD. Unity Star has a higher power rating 70WPC vs 40WPC, more inputs, and the DAB/FM tuner module. If you want it all and have about $11,000 US, buy the Unity Nova (80WPC, HDMI, more inputs, balance in/out) and a Unity Core😊.

Would this be a good replacement for my Olive 4 music component? It appears to effectively be the same type of component where I can rip my CD's onto it and use the app to access the music.

Yes and it will bring you clearly higher sound quality

The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel Thanks. Expensive at about $4,000 in my country but it appears to be like the Olive 4. I will need to try it in store to see how the app works and especially if I can edit the album tracks and create customised albums by deleting unwanted tracks or simply creating a second version of the album. I love the Olive 4 but Olive have disappeared and no longer service the unit or maintain the app. They took our money and ran 😂

Can the Uniti Core be connected to the preamp without using a network? Or does it need to be connected to a computer or DAC?

It doesn't need a computer but it does need a DAC or amplifier with integrated DAC. It can play music without a network once the music is stored on the Uniti Core. Bt for ripping it is needed since it needs to download metadata (album name, tract names and so on) from the internet.
