Today we’re going to build this Nakashima inspired stool/ side table with an inlaid abalone butterfly key. George Nakashima is one of my favorite woodworkers and I’ve always wanted to build a piece to pay homage. For my regular viewers you’ll remember when my stool broke not once,!!! But twice,!! during the Q and A with my wife. So this gave me a good excuse to build something that not only looked gorgeous, but would support my, robust backside. It has an inlaid abalone butterfly key which I did an entire video on.
This was the first project I’ve ever done using wood I milled and dried by myself. A friend of mine gave me a 100 year old walnut tree. One of the biggest walnuts I’ve ever seen. We bought a bandsaw mill and milled up some of the, absolutely most beautiful slabs I’ve ever seen. We kiln dried them carefully and they are now on my website. In fact, because you guys have always been so kind, I’ll ship them FOR FREE anywhere in the lower 48 for the next month (until 6/9/18). If you’re watching this after June 9th don’t worry, shipping is pretty reasonable, especially for walnut of this quality.

Finally another woodworker using a wormdrive to cut down some stock. I thought I was the only one, lol. Everyone else uses the homeowner Harry baby saws and honestly I think they're under powered, I can mash thru some pretty good planks with my skilsaw.... Great video, thank you for posting.

robzilla2165 owned a framing company for almost a decade. Don't know what I'd do without my mag77

I've been in construction for 35 years and nothing gets it done like a mag 77.... I actually picked up a late 50's wormdrive, its heavy as hell but has tons of torque and it looks way cool too... Thanks for the reply keep rockin!

What size blade are you using for the bandsaw? I have that same bandsaw and I think my 1/8" blade has more play (not sure of the teeth though...). I recently purchased the book by Nakashima, The Soul of a Tree, so this was great to see. Love that it's a stool AND side table when needed! Lots of great tips in the video!

Matthew Wolfe it's an 1/8 inch I believe. Have it cranked way up to it doesn't move too much. Thank you my friend!

Nice piece, but I think the bolts were overkill. Hopefully this will provide many years of service to your grandchildren.

I almost choked, gagging on my tears when I saw those slabs knowing I need a piece about 6' x 6+" x 3/4+ for a work bench face and many at only 2/4_ to build a tool chest of drawers. I will probably die without these things done.
