Op. 24 (1966).
Music and songs for the stage adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis' novel of the same name performed by the Greek Popular Theatre under the direction of Manos Katrakis. The lyrics comprised various sentences in the book, whose selection and composition into seven entities was undertaken by Yerassimos Stavrou.

Cette chanson est un chef d'œuvre (on n'en entend ici qu'une partie). Ce fut l'un des meilleurs choix de Nana, comme hymne d'entrée et de sortie de ses tours de chant donnés à Paris d'abord fin 1971, puis en tournée en France et au Royaume-uni par la suite. C'est l'une des plus grandes réussites de Manos Hadjidakis, adaptée par bien des interprètes, dont Nana fut l'une des meilleures, pour ne pas dire la meilleure. Il y a plusieurs années, une chanteuse espagnole l'a fait adapter dans son répertoire avec un franc succès et avec brio. Les paroles espagnoles sont calquées sur l'original

Thanks so much for posting this. Thought I'd never hear it again. What a wonderful mysterious melody and lyrics. A really superb performance. I'd love to see Nana and the Athenians singing "Irini", also featured in BBC4 tribute.

the very sad thing is that promoting Greece that time, was identical with promoting the coronels' dictatorship. Very sad and contradictional... If things were different in Greece when Nana, at the peak of her career, was enchanting the world introducing the music of her country to the end of the universe, the benefit would be even greater... Nana we love you!

Ce fut le meilleur batteur des groupes qui ont accompagné Nana : je me rappellerai toujours son incroyable prestation aux Champs-Elysées, notamment dans "Le ciel est noir", une réelle performance physique et sonore.

@jagara1 No. The song is called "then ee-tan neesee". "then" is what "not" is in english (negative particle). "ee-tan" is here the equivalent of "that was" and "neesee" stands for island. So the title translation is right.
