I was born and raised in Hawai'i, so seeing this game is interesting; I appreciated the inclusion of the native plants (naupaka is one of my favorites; it blooms in halves, so putting two naupaka flowers together make a full flower) and mythology. I also loved the background noises (i.e., the birds chirping) because it's exactly how it sounds like during certain times of the day (like early in the morning). I am not Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) but I am a fellow Pacific Islander (CHamoru/Palauan). I was reading through the comments and want to thank those who are sharing what they know about Hawai'i's history and other problems (such as the water contamination via the Red Hill tanks); it's neat to see an increasing awareness of the issues the local communities are facing (and the lead-up to those issues). For example, I grew up knowing Hawai'i used to be the Kingdom of Hawai'i, but learned in high school that the last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawai'i, Queen Liliʻuokalani, was forced to abdicate her throne, held under house arrest in her room at Iolani Palace and was not allowed visitors (except for one companion of hers). If you visit the palace, you are able to see her room and the quilt she created during this arrest. Iolani Palace's website has more information on this, should you want to learn more (I am not an expert on the timeline or all events in Hawai'i's history, but want to share educational resources that may be helpful). For those who want or plan to visit the islands in the future (or want to support the local communities here), please consider supporting the small, local, BIPOC-owned (especially Kānaka-owned) businesses and local initiatives + organizations. A few of my personal favorites are Ao Organics Hawai'i (ethical and sustainable skin + body care), Laulima Hawai'i (focuses on native plant restoration + conservation), Popoki + Tea (cat cafe' that allows people to visit and adopt the in-house cats, who are all rescue cats), and Mai Hilahila (Kānaka and wahine-owned apparel business that promotes "shameless self-love and empowerment"). If you made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read my comment. I hope you have a beautiful day!

I recently visited Hawaii and when I heard the chirping of the zebra dove I said “ah, there’s that sound” and then I realized I’d never heard it in real life before! I had only heard it in this game. I’m glad they put in authentic bird sounds.

I'd be interested in visiting to support the origin of one of my favorite types of coffee (coffee is a big deal for me). I find it's story and folklore beautiful, especially in some of the art. Recently Hawai'i popped up in an investigation I'm working on involving a self-proclaimed group of cult members getting arrested and kicked out of Hawai'i. They go under the name Carbon Nation and approx. 12 of it's members were arrested and kicked out. This was during initial COVID quarantine protocols but also, following similarly to another cult who showed up and had it's leader essentially state she was Pele', they were hugely disrespectful to the locals beliefs and history discrediting it with their own self-serving woo. They are parasitic and I hope this trend stops at those instances. Preservation of culture and it's natural history is immensely important and to lose that whether to delusional cults or the consequences of war can be infuriating and certainly heartbreaking.

Nancy Drew first appeared in "The Secret of the Old Clock", by Edward Stratemeyer, in 1930, and her age was given as 16 in that story. That means this year she is 108 years old.

@@Theonlygracius Edward hired her to ghostwrite the books under that pseudonym, but other people have written Nancy Drew books under that same pseudonym. He still kinda “created” Nancy Drew, although she probably would’ve been pretty lame if he wrote them. Only reason he made Nancy Drew was because he thought it would sell, since he saw that girls also read his other books, the Hardy Boys. He wanted to make one specifically for the girls, even though in reality he thought the “woman’s place was in the kitchen” or whatever. Glad he got an actual woman to write her instead. Though, his views are probably the reason Hannah was always sent to kitchen in the first few books. I know too much about the books, sorry, I just had to infodump a bit. It’s been years since I thought about it though, there’s probably so many things I don’t remember.

An hour in and I suddenly was having flashbacks to this game and remembering how negative I found Nancy in this game! I always loved bugs so I could not get my head around her not being into this entire trip. Looking at it from an adult POV, Nancy faced enough inconveniences in this one to put anyone in a bad mood regardless of what you're meant to be doing. All while not even getting paid! XD

Gab, you’re kinda right to assume that Hawaii was its own country because technically, it was. The Americans used it as a military base first, hence Pearl Harbor, to fight the Japanese during WWII, and then, as with everything we do, we took Hawaii and annexed it into the US in the mid 50s.

This game was the first time I heard the word “frass”, and when I finally took an entomology class I one of those moments of “Hey, I learned that from Nancy!” I feel like there’s always at least one thing like that in each game that sticks in your brain as a fun fact. It’s also cool to revisit this game after many years and lots of reading about bugs because Dr. Kim’s rambling went from overly-sciency to “oh, okay, that makes sense”.

Here we goooo! :D - This game lets you change the look of the UI in the settings menu! You could've had green leafiness or pink or teal hibiscus flowers. And the cell phone becomes a silver Razr if you use one of those looks. (This game came out in October of 2006, so that would mean Nancy had a very cool phone!) - Pretty sure Frank's voice was also Andy Jason of Whale World. - When I replayed this before the stream, that was the first time I'd ever realized you can click to the left of the dock's stairs to check for shells instead of going around to the right. - Camera phones make some parts of these games *so* much easier. You can just take pictures of all the plant info instead of having to sketch the plants or try to write down what they look like. [grumble grumble back in my day...] - Dr. Craven would be almost 80 years old now. It's always weird to me to figure out the ages of characters now compared to when I first played the games. - When Craven tells the employee to put the solar cells in your car, they magically show up in your inventory before you actually get to your car. They probably figured nobody would open their inventory while still inside the Hilihili. - ATAC (American Teens Against Crime) has its own cell network, apparently. - There's a glitch for making money when you first play as Joe! You can talk to Mike about everything except leaving the office, make two Aloha necklaces, buy the Goo bait, go fish, and enjoy infinite Zippy bait for a while. You just have to stop and go talk to Mike before you get a sixth ulua because I think that breaks the game. - The Zippy family empire has expanded from gas stations to international phone cards and now to... worms. - It turns out Nancy isn't the only tactless teen detective. You can't just ask "what happened to Pua's mom?" so abruptly, lol. - I used to have a recording of the Wiki Tiki song on an old cell phone because it made me happy. :D - If you talk to Pua while you're still Joe, she mentions that Frank hasn't tried standing up on his surfboard yet, which Joe finds amusing. - I love that Pua's nail polish matches her clothing. Fashion icon! - The acacia leaves remind me of Doc Ock, lol. That's what I wrote in my notes for them. - The way I usually get money in this game is to just buy the Goo bait. Necklaces are annoying and you can pretty much only make Aloha ones without buying other beads (until you can snorkel but at that point there's no real need for money anyway). I do really like the "red herring" bait, though. It's cute. - When you were giving Big Island Mike a bunch of shave ice, someone in chat said they hoped he would get a Big Island brainfreeze and I actually laughed out loud. - For that turtle/volcano timeline puzzle, the palm tree is also helpful to consider. Props to you for figuring that out so quickly/easily! - Johnny Kuto can call you back, though I'm not sure why he didn't for you. You can kind of bluff for a while and get him to admit he's working with/for Mike, but he eventually realizes you don't know what you're talking about. - The end "puzzle" is super dumb, tbh. In junior mode, MIke is a big island dummy and isn't likely to escape before you, but something about senior mode makes it so that the rock right before your exit just doesn't want to show up. I played it on senior and it seriously took me like 20 minutes of trying because I couldn't get that dang rock to appear. Blargh. This stream was totally worth being awake at 6 AM after getting less than an hour of sleep! Looking forward to Icicle Creek! (I replayed that one last night and Steam says it took me 5.2 hours.)
@isawp5199
@isawp5199 Жыл бұрын
I did the math once, and assuming you aren't trying to dive for any shells, Dancing Lizard gets you the most profit at $6,75. Even though you need to buy most of its beads! Next is Thunder Cloud at $6,67 profit. Next Aloha at $4 (which is the no-buy- necklace). Dance of Pele gets you $3,67. Shark Bite and Bird of Paradise aren't worth it, although they still give you profit. Of course you usually don't finish a whole bag of beads on one necklace, so to make all the money back you have to make multiple necklaces, but those are the cost-per-bead profit numbers.

As a biologist in Hawai'i, I was horrified by the trailer for this game and the generic Polynesian statue imagery, but insanely impressed by what it actually incorporates. The typical Nancy Drew odd fantastical elements aside, it was not inaccurate. The native and invasive plants were spot on, and the unique people who find their way into science and how they compete are based in reality. The way research is portrayed is really accurate while staying age appropriate for the audience (though most of us would kill for funding that could give us facilities like THAT). The predatory way Nancy was taken advantage of as an inexperienced but enthusiastic novice whose vacation became grunt work was too real. At the beginning, the tour guide and his daughter do an excellent job implying the realities of living here. There's even some interesting connections to land theft issues with "leased" land. I will say, it's pretty backwards to portray the pineapples as worth saving and the people trying to reclaim what is theirs as the bad guys, but for how old this is, I am really impressed by how they portrayed a lot of this. Dr. Kim's character has me dying with laughter. Now that is an entomologist. Her cheap, broken field equipment and narrowly focused, unhinged enthusiasm is a perfect (and real) contrast to the elitist, privately-funded bioengineer.

I can't believe I 'm done watching the Nancy Drew Playlist T_T. I began binge-watching this series last weekend and now it's over (for now of course). Nancy Drew was often mentioned during other playthroughs that I had to give it a chance and I totally loved it! Especially learning so many interesting facts/stories alongside Gab, plus the voice acting and the scripts are always so good

This was the only Nancy Drew game I played to completion as a kid. I'm looking at some of the puzzles you're doing and thinking 'how the heck did i figure that out as a teen with no guides?' Also, I am tickled by the fact that you are so excited for the next game primarily because of the Game Grumps meme.

This was literally my first of the Nancy Drew games that I ever played when I was young! My cousin introduced me to these and it started a life long addiction to games in general! 🤣 I'm so happy to see you playing them! Feel like Nancy Drew and Herinteractive in general just really needed some love! So glad I found you to watch your so relaxing to watch!

Kapu Cave is infamously one of the most hated games in the franchise (there's three games that contend for that spot - Kapu Gave, Midnight in Salem, and one you haven't gotten to yet, I won't say which one cos that wouldn't be fair to put a negative out there before you get to give it a fair shake...but also its the one I think is actually the worst, since kapu cave at least has interesting learning wrapped into it and Midnight in Salem came with severe disadvantages from the get go so I'm willing to be a bit more lenient with it), so I'm glad you had fun with it anyway.

Whoa, that is the smartest way I’ve seen anyone solve the flavor ice puzzle! When I was a kid, I just guessed wildly, then memorized the answer for future playthroughs. (Once, my friend guessed it right on the first try, and I was furious/impressed.) Anyway, great job and great stream!

Oh, you actually missed some of the dialogues. For example after you leave a message for a thieve, he will call back and explain why did he knocked out Joe, you just need to spend some time doing something after Frank leaves message for this call to initiate. I actually didn't know you can finish game without some this dialogues.

I grew up playing these games with my sister, it was one of the few things we bonded over. I think we stopped at Danger by Design, that’s the last one I remember playing anyway. Watching you play these brought back a lot of good memories of where me and my sister would constantly wrack our brains trying to solve puzzles and think who the culprit might be. Thanks for making these, it was fun to watch.

Finally caught up to the latest Nancy drew video! I’ve been listening to your gameplays for the past few weeks while working and even though I can’t watch them, it was still entertaining to listen to. It was like listening to a podcast! The faces of the characters always don’t match what I envisioned in my head (along with the locations and such) whenever I get a chance to look at the video which always catches me off guard 😂 and even though I can’t see the puzzles, hearing you and the chat figure things out is always enjoyable! Hope to see more Nancy drew gameplays in the future (: thanks for the content!

Just started watching this play through, but that intro cinematic of watching that camp being trashed, via items flying around was so ridiculous to watch, but amusing. Looking at comments, and excited to see the rest of this play through. I’ve been watching a lot of these Nancy Drew games and I’m very likening to it now. I grew up reading “The Boxcar Children” mysteries, so I never got particularly into the Nancy Drew books, even though both series are almost the same age. (Boxcar started in the 40s)

This game was kind of a let-down/misleading. The trailer said it was gonna have a “terrifying monster” and the title even said there was a creature… but there wasn’t anything close to that in the game. The only that was remotely intense was the stealth section in the facility and the bit in the store when the guy attacks you. There was no “terrifying creature”. Should’ve just been called “Kapu Cave Caper”

Hawai’i is in a legal state of war, hence it is not a state in sense and should be returned to the natives. Then they can decide how tourism is handled. It’s only fair. I hope they can accomplish it. I know if I ever visit I’m gonna support locals.

My theory is that Nancy drew is only a great detective bc she’s nosy as hell. Like her in the Japan one was just wow girl. Snoop through peoples shit and go above & beyond. And spends all her days without chilling just snooping. I could be great detective too if I did that.
