If the Chinese truly had any problem with this trip they should have made their reservations in private but publicly stating a high ranking US official cannot visit a country is reason for that official to do exactly that so they are not seen as a pushover for China.

Taiwan is of strategic value b/c it's the only free democratic Chinese speaking state in the world, now that HK was reabsorbed back to China. It is also right in the middle of trade routes that 20-25% of all the world's shipping trade goes thru. Geopolitically, if Taiwan is to fall to China, you basically divide Japan/S Korea off from Australia, Phillipines, NZ, our allies and also China projects power all the way to Guam, and Hawaii. Taiwan also produces like 60-80% of chips in the world, including like all the chips that power our missiles, helicopters, fighter jets, in addition to cars, apple, etc etc etc. It's also not that easy to build chips. China has been trying for 20 years but can only build lower level 10 nm chips whereas Taiwan is already planning 3 nm chip production in a couple years. Taiwan is known for producing electrical engineers. I was a grad student in ECE in U of IL Urbana Champaign in the 1990s and many of my friends in the department including professors were all Taiwanese. It took TSMC 30+ years to get to where they are. Building a chip involves R&D, tons of money, resources, connections to other industries, for example Europe for etching, Japan for chemicals, etc. The entire Hsinchu city is basically dedicated to electronics semiconductor development and manufacturing, packaging, etc. TSMC is building factories in AZ and Japan to diversify, but it takes time. for the US, it would take Intel and other companies like 5-10 years to catch up even with the Chip Act. It also does not help that we are spending more attention on gender and bathroom issues and dumbing down our curriculum rather than focus on hardcore mathematics and physics/sciences in the US.

After ROC lost the Mainland China to CPC and retreated to Taiwan island, the Chinese civil war is never ended. In the beginning, when ROC in Taiwan had stronger economical and military power than Mainland China, they had a dream to come back one day. ROC had been sending warships, air fighters and bombers to visit Mainland China from time to time for decades and even bombed some coast areas. Of course, Mainland China also fight back like the "Second Taiwan Strait Crisis” started from 1958. While both sides ceased fire in 1979, til late 90s', many fishing farmers from Mainland China were killed every year by ROC soldiers just because they were getting too close to the areas controlled by Taiwan during fishing. Then Mainland China rised. When Taiwan had to admitted they would never be able to defeat Mainland, especially after DPP won the election from ROC, Taiwan started to claim they were "bullied" by Mainland and they has to pursue independency. But what really happened? USA lauched the trade war with PRC because they believe PRC earned about USD 300B net every year from them. While more than 50% of Taiwan's export income are from Mainland and Taiwan earns close to USD 200B net every year. Do not forget there are 1.4B people in Mainland and only 24M people in Taiwan. Do not forget Mainland also produces most of commodities, products and fruits from Taiwan but just gave Taiwan priority in the market. Taiwanese are welcomed and getting special treatment to study, work, invest, run buiness in Mainland but Taiwan almost banded everything from Mainland instead. For example, It is every easy for Taiwanese students to enter top universities in Mainland. But Taiwan only allows very limited number of Mainland students to study in Taiwan. Mainland Chinese students cannot join Taiwan's medical care which at the same time is open to students with other nationalities. CPC always tells Mainland Chinese that Taiwanese are our brothers and sisters, but Taiwan educates Taiwanese students that they are not Chinese but some wild human kind from south Asian islands........Endless The speaker of US White House said PRC should not be too sensitive of Pelosi's visit to Taiwan because the House Speaker also visited Taiwan 25 years ago. Well, American spy planes also sneaked in Mainland China's coast areas decades ago. Do you dare to come again? It is like an adult slapped a child's face again and again 25 years ago, but now he has become a true man. Do you expect him to stand still and allow you to slap him again? All in all, Mainland had been treating Taiwan very well and hoped we could reunify one day but not in a hurry. Unfortunately, if some Taiwanese politicions keep on digging their own graves, Mainland has to raise the reunification as the first priority.

I’m not a fan of Nancy Pelosi, but I truly hope her visit goes well and she stays safe! Our political beliefs differ, but she is my fellow American citizen, I pray her return trip is smooth. But I would NEVER wish her harm, especially from China. I applaud her bravery and pride for going there and not letting China dictate where she can and can’t go.

If CHINA and USA would go to war, ASEAN countries might go neutral. We walked into a neighborhood police station and told them where we had been and where we caught the cab. They brought us up on video in several locations throughout the city, noted the license plates on the cab, and he had his phone back within the hour. Taipei has heavy surveylance.

I’m sooooo glad she went, America needs to show strength right now. The audacity of China believing they can bend us to their will, they’ve gotten a little to used to bossing their own people around.

I'm glad Pelosi didn't let China dictate to her where she would travel and with whom she would meet. This is an important trip with our strategic allies.

Personally I cant see the purpose with this trip. The world is in complete turmoil, and this is not making it any better. I honestly feel that the politicians are playing with fire, and they will NOT pay the price, but normal people will with their lives.
