Thanks for the honest review. There are two low grit stones I really like one is the King 300 and the other is Carborundum 120/320. King 300 is a hard splash and go. Carborundum is a soft silicon carbide stone. Feels like a gravel road and will scratch everything if you sharpen low angle but it has excellent cutting speed and is dirt cheap comparing to Japanese stones.

Thanks for the vid. I'll contact you soon when I need to pick up a couple of stones again. Don't know if you have mentioned it in other videos but you touched on it a bit in this video. Importing stones (or almost anything) to Norway is quite expensive compared to other European countries because of taxes and import fees etc (and shipping of course), so that people outside the country know that. But even with that, your prices are really fair for Norwegian standards. Keep up the great work, always interesting to see and learn about the different stones, as someone getting back into water stones after mainly using diamond plates the last few years. Super interested to get to trying the Suehiro LD-21 180#, also kinda curious about the LD-101 1000# (though I find the Suehiro naming a bit confusing at times, but I'm sure I'll get used to it).

How does the Omurata 150 compare to the Suehiro Debado coarse stone (LD21/MD20)? A vid on that would be really awesome!

I have both and use both and like them both. The very coarse Debados are absolute beasts, but you pay for it because they are extremely expensive for their grit and dish out and wear down very fast. And there is basically no way around that. I use the Debado 1k and 4k as the main workhorses in my progression, and l love both of them. The 180 and 200 Debados are amazing in action but holy smokes do they disappear quickly. And if you are using them for thinning, you'll be taking flattening breaks constantly. The New Omura 150 is twice as much stone for half as much money, and while it is more complex to learn and use, once you figure out how to work with it, it can be very durable despite being on the soft side. In this video, it looks like he keeps the surface too wet and constantly removes the slurry. And that's why it dishes so fast. This stone works much better if you soak it for a couple minutes, raise a slurry with a diamond plate, and then leave it on there. Only add a spritz of water occasionally if the knife sticks. This lets the mud do the work and preserves the life of the stone. Also, l use these type stones almost exclusively for thinning wide bevels, and not sharpening edges. That is where they really shine. If you go digging edges into any of these, they will need constant flattening.

Have you done the cerax 320 grit try that against the shapton pro i would be interested in what you think. Although the suehiro is a soaker and the shapton a splash and go. I use my rust eraser to clean my stone now and then. No crime committed. The chosera 3k is a beautiful stone.

The pro would be a tad harder if im not mistaken. i believe the lowest grit naniwa produces in the pro/chosera/arata range is 400#. And i havent had enough experience on the 320 new cerax. i have the 280# though, the small version :)

Would you say the omurato is a good stone for thining ? It would be interesting to compare the omurato and the imanishi pink brick for thining

No i wouldnt recommend it for that purpose simply because it is so soft. It will wear down the surface and make it difficult to remove scratches in the following grits. personally i prefer a belt grinder :P BUT i would look towards harder stones. I believe suehiro debado MD - 20, or LD - 21 would be the way to go :)

I love this 150 for thinning, with this caveat- you have to keep the slurry on the stone and not let ir get too wet. You basically want your stone coated in a paste of slurry, and just barely spritz it bow and then when ir gets too snicky .

What knife is it? What steel?

It is a wusthof pro in high carbon stainless steel hardened to about 56 rockwell. So it's a soft steel, but it's easy to maintain and makes a great "beater" 😁

Myself i tend to gravitate towards the softer stones as well, and i have to admit that i have a soft spot for Suehiro. They make some awsome soaking stones, ouka, rika and shiramine just to name a few. If you ever have a chance, check out their LD - range. splash and go, but amazing large stones. The ld-21 180# is my favourite coarse stone atm.

@@lofotenknifeworks2278 love the Rika. Amazing 5k stone.Best in its class on the planet. Just like the chosera 3k, best in its class on the planet. I have the Suehiro MD 20 and 100. Both nice splash and go stones.

I have the omurto 150. I like it for thinning and chip repair its a actually very impressive so is the naniwa 220grit aramusha pink brick. I like both a lot better than the shapton 120grit white stone

Why not compare the same grit? 150 vs 320 is a big difference. How can you compare. Why the 320 and not 120 grit? At least the 120 shapton pro is closer than 320 grit
@lofotenknifeworks2278

Firstly this was a request from a viewer :) But its not always just the grit that decides. If you compare the same grit between naniwa pro, naniwa super and shapton pro. The shapton will be fastest and the superstone would be slowest but polish way better. And the pro somewhere in between. And that all comes down to the bonding/polishing agent, as well as the molecular structure (Baked vs vitrified etc). So in some cases it can be very interresting. :)
