I was a nanny before I moved. I work at a daycare now while I'm looking for a nanny job. I feel like I provide much better care as a nanny. The ratios don't really allow me to know the kids well. Also, kids take the time to bond with a caregiver and daycares have high turnover rates. If you can afford to pay a nanny half way decent you can keep them longer by offering a decent package. Daycares don't really do that. Even so, they get a new teacher every year or so anyhow.

On my son’s 12month appointment, he didn’t reach all his milestones. He wasn’t using gestures or saying mama or dada I started taking him to a home based childcare(I knew the owner already). I see he can eat well now but my only issue is that they don’t do any activities. They’re always watching tv, or when I go drop him sometimes she’s on her phone. But I want my child to learn something, do activities to help with his development, and I don’t think she’s offering that. I see her childcare as a babysitting thing. There are kids of different ages So now I’ve decided to take him to daycare. At least to sit with his age-mate and also socialize with other kids…..but I’m anxious at the same time. I never wanted to take any of my kids to daycare, but at this point of my life, I have school. It’s for some months. So what will you advice, leave him at the home childcare because I know the owner or take him to daycare, where he can meet his agemate.

I am only giving my suggestion as someone that is in the early childhood field. But I would recommend shopping around for home care before leaving it all together. Childcare at a daycare have many more children than at home and though they are required to teach so too do you have to worry about the fact that your child may not get as much attention as he may need or want due to the larger ratio. Though you may know the owner of the home care remember that you have a lot more control of what goes on that you require when looking for service. Believe me you would be surprised that your child could be in daycare playing with blocks, magnetiles, and maybe participate in art all day and still not learn anything.

This is not ok! Find another place. Screen time and not being engaging with your kid is a red flag.

Definitely look for another caregiver. We get daily photos and videos of kids doing different activities in the home daycare. They even take field trips. Shop around, take tours. We visited several facilities before deciding it was not an option. Then toured several in home daycares until the last one that just felt right. The owners should love what they do. In our daycare the whole family takes turns helping the owner. So the ratio is more like 1:2. The more stable the environment the better for the kids, esp. at the young age.

I don’t recommend in home childcare I worked at one and the teachers would yell at the children I didn’t like the way they treated the kids and I didn’t like the environment in that daycare so I quit.

So true about the two trusts - I love my nanny and trust her to provide my child with a safe and loving environment. However, as she grows up, she is harder to be entertained. She is speaking-delayed which may be contributed by our English-as-second-Language nanny. I am torn. If I start my child for half day school/half day nanny, I am afraid the nanny will need to seek for another full-time job. Plus in school she gets sick a lot and I will have to prepare for scrambling from time to time and find her care....

@DewTime well duh.....That logic is applied to anything. It's like if you say Chevy is the best vehicle made....That depends on your view of vehicles. If you say chocolate mint is the best ice cream....that depends on your view of ice cream. Never did I say.....EVERYONE must choose what I think is best. What I think is best, is just that....MY opinion on the matter.

Thank you! It would be important to me -- as I would NOT want the nanny to have been recently vaccinated and bringing the "shedding" over to my house and my baby.
