Photos these days usually stay in digital form. Sometimes we back them up to the cloud for safekeeping: but who is getting access to your sensitive images when you do so?
In this video we look at the built-in photo backup options on iPhone and Android, and how private they really are. We also explore more private backup solutions, and how to set them up to happen automatically so that you never have to worry about losing your precious memories ever again.
There are some really simple solutions that don’t require any technical skill.

Digital memories have become a central part of our lives. I’m really excited that you are treating them with the privacy they deserve.

Whatever you back up, use a 3-2-1 pattern. 3 copies, 2 of which online and 1 off line. A gold standard in backing ups.

128GB BD-XL Sony discs and Linear Tape-Open cassettes (which can cost cost around $45 for 6 TB of data storage) are better than simply using external HDD drives as backup.
@JasonBechervaise

I've a slightly different definition for this pattern. (3) At least three copies of the data (i.e. primary plus at least two backups); (2) At least two different media types (e.g. magnetic, solid state, optical); (1) At least one copy off site. I like your notion of two online copies and one offline, where online means immediately accessible (not necessarily on the internet), and where offline is on media that is effectively write only and unpowered to guard from malware, for example.

That's not how it works. The 3-2-1 rule is 3 copies on at least 2 different forms of medium, 1 of which is off site. Industry standard.

Regarding the Synology NAS, I'd like to add that Synology supports 'QuickConnect', which allows you to access your NAS from the Internet without having to poke holes in your firewall. Also, Synology supports cloud backup of your NAS with local side encryption and only you have the key (don't lose it!). Very private and secure as far as I'm aware. I always use Syncthing, a FOSS application to synchronize files across various devices. In my case I have a one-way synchronization, pushing all photos from my local photos folder to my Server/NAS. It is pretty easy to set up, at least not harder than something like Synology Photos. It is not just available for Synology and works pretty reliably in the background, at least on non-iPhones. It could also be an option for people without a server who have a PC though (Windows, Mac Linux). Then it would always push the photos if both, the phone and the PC are running and connected to the same network . For most people, this should be the case if their PC is running. I think this might even be the best opinion. It even works securely encrypted over the internet without opening ports.

@hiamben I just noticed a minor loss of battery life. Perhaps 1-2% more per day than without. However, my phone has a rather big 5000mAh battery (4 years old now). On my old phone (S7) it would probably have drained the battery as you described.

Big fan of Syncthing. Sort of a fork/clone of BitTorrent/Resilio Sync. Every time I take a picture on my phone - bam - it's on my computer. It'll even wait if the computer is off. I also use it to sync a bunch of audio books from my PC back to the phone. The only downside I've had is that Android will occasionally kill the app to save memory. Not often, though.
@IPnator

@@Insightfill In newer Android versions, in addition to the option to allow an app to run in the background, there is also the option to stop the app activity when not in use. This is always on by default. I would try deactivating this.

For years I've been using resilio sync. Not open source, i know, but works very well. You choose some folders you want to synchronize, then synchronize them peer to peer between a set of computers or devices. Data is encrypted with AES 128 in transit. You can also choose to only share fully encrypted copies of the files with an external device if you dont trust it, in which case you have full end to end encryption. I use that together with an online web server, and voila, private cloud storage.

Naomi, a good video as usual, but as a proton user i dont recommend it for photo backup just yet. you can not create folders or should i say albums, therefore if you are like me and have hundreds if not thousands of photos, it just becomes a total mess with no structure and trying to find a particular photo to view is frustrating and time consuming. eventually proton will sort this out, but they are slow to update there apps. So i would go with Mega which is end to end encrypted for now. Great channel Naomi and i appreciate your effort in trying to educate us all.

i'm trying to break free from monthly cloud backup subscription fees thanks for this. I wonder if iOS specific features like Live photos are actually preserved with proton backup or with using synology nas. I actually like those few seconds of video and audio--like a harry potter moving portrait to go along with the still photo--and it all should be backed up not just the stills. Really miss having microSD cards built in to phones. Would love to have a 1.5TB expansion card for my iphone.

A huge problem with proton drive is web and javascript. When using web browsers, client-side code has to come from the server, so the server could still become a bad guy and send you malicious client-side code and then see all your data It's end to end encrypted only because the client-side code isn't malicious It would be noticed by people if this happened at large scale, but the server could target some IPs at the request of law enforcement and send this malicious code only to those IPs, and it would never be noticed

I'd love to try to self host stuff locally, but it would make me anxious for two reasons: 1. Can I secure access to the server easily? 2. Higher chance of drive failure than, let's say, Proton Drive. Any tips? :)

1) This topic can go quite deep but the simplest answer is to keep whatever device you're using to self-host on behind a firewall and don't expose it outside your LAN. If you need to access it when you're not home, you can setup a VPN to remote in securely. Setting up a Wireguard VPN isn't too complex if you simply follow a guide but you can also use something like Tailscale. Alternatively, if you do want to selectively expose certain services, you could utilize something like Cloudflare Tunnels via their Zero Trust service to act as a secure reverse proxy (you can even configure Cloudflare's authentication in front of these exposed applications, kind of blurring the line). 2) Redundant storage (whether it be hardware-based like a RAID controller or software-based like Unraid or ZFS) significantly helps with reducing the chance of data loss due to drive failures, but you should always keep an off-site backup for critical files. This could be another NAS or similar device left at a family members home or simply a cloud service, like Proton Drive.

I don't think proton is a good option for backup. There have many good option in market like pcloud. And I also think that giving all my details to one company is much more riskier than choosing different company for different usages pattern. The most recommend option in proton is Proton Unlimited plan where we get drive, mail, password manager and vpn and I don't like to give all my data to one company

Can you please elaborate more on the privacy part on the photos because as far as I can tell a simple web link can unlock the files for viewing in the web browser which does not sound private at all to me.

I use Proton mail and calendar but Proton Drive requires Mac OS 13. I'm only able to install 12 on my machine. Bummer.

I use Proton/iCloud for most of my files but sadly Google Photos is still my one guilty pleasure but I’d love a viable alternative for me. With 40,000 photos, I need an effective way of searching for them or it’s useless. As soon as that gets better elsewhere, I’m shifting. Not even iCloud Photos compares sadly.

For self-hosting, Immich is an amazing Google Photos alternative. But for cloud offerings, yeah there's not much that's on par feature wise that I've found yet.

Is it possible that Proton has removed the Photo Backup feature for the iPhone? I don't have the "Photos" button in the app and all help on the Proton website is for Android

They didn't remove it, it simply hasn't been released yet. The photo backup feature on Android is still relatively new and will be coming to the iOS version in the near future.

yeah sure: nextcloud, raspberry pies, nas systems etc. but look at the design of the apps, look at the tweaking needed to set them up. there just is no convenience. i personally would go with e2ee icloud photos and have apple read the meta data. actually, doing local backups of the phone is the best way to go, but thats just an opinion.

Went back to my old digital camera. SD card for viewing on my tv. And no need for the pc ever. And better to snap your files to digital tv viewing. Plus its amazing how you cant have a phone contract without internet. The old days were text and call. Blissful old days still today.
