What is the year of manufacture for the Purolator filter? I ordered a PBL22500 filter from Amazon and it only has seven inlet holes as opposed to eight in the video and the box says 2022 and according to the date code on the filter it was made on May 1, 2023.

Recently (June 2023) I went back onto Amazon Canada to buy another Purolator Boss Filter. For several years I have bought them @ Canadian $22.00 each. This time, they are listed @ Canadian $58.00 each! Guess what? Uh Uh, no more PB for me! I always do my research and look for a premium filter (and oil) and (with the help of these video's by Whip City) I will now by a NAPA Platinum. Thanks WP 👍👍😎

I've used Purolator exclusively for 40+ years with no issues, switching to the Boss synthetic within the past five or six, and they've not let me down. Which is nothing against NAPA. Just my humble opinion and comment. The greatest thing to consider is maintenance. Would I ever go to the interval stated on the box? Absolutely not, every 5,000.

Great comparison, I think price might be the deciding factor since both Purolator and Wix (Napa filter) are now under the same umbrella and are great filters. Funny how that particular Wix filter now sports a nearly identical baseplate, both stamped 22, although the Purolator uses a full stamping for the baseplate cover with Wix using a Champ style outer for the gasket holder. I am a sucker for a pretty paint job and have used Purolator almost exclusively on my Million Mile vehicles since the late 70’s. Good stuff👍

The vast majority of the Napa Gold/Platinum filters are still made in Gastonia, NC. The vast majority of Purolator filters are still made in Fayetteville,NC. There are so many applications today that no company can provide them all in house. I’ve been working in the automotive repair industry for 30 years and I pay attention to where the parts that I use are produced. If it’s got Made in China stamped on it I will not buy it unless there’s no alternative. Wix has for years used suppliers in countries like Poland and Germany for smaller volume(sales )filters. Wix and Donaldson have a joint venture plant in Mexico as well. Every oil filter application that I use on a regular basis are made here in N.C. But when it comes to air & fuel filters they’re coming from all over the world. Israel, Poland, Mexico, Indonesia, ect. I wish that every product that I buy was made here in the USA but that’s just not the case. I do my best to support American products and I do my best to avoid Chinese products whenever possible. Unfortunately many American companies are getting their products from China in order to increase their profits at the expense of American workers.

The stated efficiency ratings ( usually on the box in the fine print) is why I don’t use extended drain filters. These 2 as well as other extended drain filters are built like Sherman tanks however the filtering just isn’t as good. Some ratings at 30 microns some at 40 microns. They other item to keep in mind is the psi of the bypass valve. Having an oil filter with a higher or lower bypass valve psi rating could be detrimental to the engine.

Purolator Boss filters for the win. The Purolator filter media includes a reinforced polymer mesh fused to the media. This mesh is equivalent to and lighter than the metal screen backing. Both incorporate thick cans, but the Boss' ethylene-acrylic gasket pushes it over the top. On a personal note, my Silverado's PBL14006 lasted a whole winter in cold Alaska without no ill effects whatsoever. Whereas, past Baldwin filter media tore away from glued base plates -- not good. Post usage tear-down inspections opened my eyes. The Boss is built like a brick outhouse.

You would think with more media the boss would filter better. Collect more dirt. But I change my filters every 2,000 mi because I keep my cars for a long time. My '04 Yukon XL has 179,000 mi on it and runs like new. Clean engine no wear. Same thing with my 2002 Trans Am and my 1999 Z28. Both have low miles and are extremely clean and well filtered. Your videos are extremely informative. Most people would never know any of this information unless you displayed it here. I have since gotten myself an oil filter cutter and inspect my filters after each run. I want to know if there are metal particles in there now that I've seen you show us particles on the media. Thank you so much for continuing to cut open filters and give us insights on them! When these filter makers change manufacturers, they don’t usually tell you. So for example… you may have bought a Wix XP for years and come to find out that they changed manufacturers and are now using what you believe to be cheaper materials and such. Because of this, I switched from Wix XP to Purolator Boss. To be fair, The Wix XP isn’t a bad filter at all, I just personally prefer the Boss at this time. I never would have known that Wix (and all brands eventually) change manufacturers and when this happens, sometimes quality can dip even with the exact same name, model and part number. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. It really means a lot to me!

Actually WIX is a manufacturer and makes filters for NAPA, CarQuest and others. However, they were purchased a few years back by Mann+Hummel who also owns Purolator. I have already seen the designs of the two begin to merge, but it's only a matter of time until they essentially become the same filter to save on manufacturing costs. It's sad, because WIX was a really durable filter and they may now be forced to become relabeled Purolator filters. We'll see...

Great to see you (apples to apples) testing oil filters fitting a common vehicle. Interesting that both are made at Mann & Hummel. The filter media I bet is exactly identical. Clearly, Mann & Hummel produce many filters from low to high grade and for various brands. The mechanical components are easily designed slightly different, but the media itself will likely be identical (based on the grade of the filter) due to the fact that a third party company is actually producing the media(s). "OEM media producers make products for Air, Water and Medical/Aerospace applications". So there is bound to be many cross applications!

Impressed with video and, in particular, the apparent quality of the Boss. I just changed oil/filter at 6,000 miles and sent sample in to Blackstone. I'll do it again after 6,000 miles with the Boss. Same oil and everything else. I will be interested to see if the results using the Boss are any different from results with Tokyo Roki OEM filter used previously. I suspect no difference will be seen but....I will await the results...which will take another six months with my driving pattern. I may also kick myself for spending $80 on Blackstone when the same money would have paid for two complete changes! (2018 Subaru 3.6R, now at 70,000)

Philip Farnam, but those lab analyses come in handy when checking the oil’s performance. When you see the amount of wear metals and additive package remaining after a certain oil change interval, it can give you a snapshot of how your engine’s health is doing. I utilized the lab results to see if the oil change interval can be extended out even further, without damaging the engine in the process, and by seeing how much oil life is left via the TBN (total base number).

No difference using Purolator Boss. 2/10/2023...just got Blackstone results back after another 6,000 miles. This sample was after switching from OEM filter to Purolator Boss. (No other changes.) "Wear metals" and "insolubles" in my sample were no different from previous sample using MUCH cheaper OEM Tokyo Roki. Basically, you would have to run the Boss through two change-intervals in order to justify its price. Not disputing concept/quality of the Boss. Only saying that with my engine (Subaru 3.6) and driving pattern, there is no measurable difference compared with OEM.

The Napa Platnum and Gold are made by Wix. I would bust buy the Wix filter add a 5 to the beginning of the p/n and you get your Wix filter. The Purolator Boss looks identical to Mobile 1 filters. Either way Wix and Mobile 1 make the best!

Purolator for the win.. i was close however the Purolator having the that adaptor neck of the filter end cap integrated vs the Nappa a 2 piece design.. The Nappa design just introduces more possibly for unfiltered oil to bypass especially as the mating surfaces are metal on metal or if not perfectly flat .. just more variables so for $3 the Purolator for me

I'll take either one. They both have synthetic media and that's the most important thing along with the mesh backing. They both go down to 20 microns so I'll use either one.

All my recent cars went over 200,000 highway miles using mobil-1 filters for the synthetic fibers and Mobil-1 oil. And here is the kicker, I change these after 8K to 10,000 miles just topped off as needed. I did this because that's why you pay more for the stuff its that much better along with the motors I am guessing. All cars were newer models, One car was a new 1998 VW, another Toyota Avalon, and the other was an Oldsmobile cutlass. But on these filters I don't think I want one with a fine metal screen for fear of bits of it floating around like a messy shop.

@@WhipCityWrencher I have heard of it before it happened to us but, if memory serves me right the other times were with Frams. The canister part was fine but, when I started it up my son yelled out that if was leaking and sure enough after yelling to tell him to shut it off I saw the leaking going on. Been using Wix for years on my own vehicles and on the ones at my work. Off to Oreillys I went and got a Micro Guard and so far it is doing fine, it made a mess. From what I understand the Micro Guard is made by Purolator. Used those previous to the Wix. So I went and found Purolators for the other cars at the house. Its ironic, I went looking up the two filters Wix and Purolators and found they are both owned by Mann Hummel. Hope the Purolators pan out.

Both good filters, very much an apples to apples comparison. This just changed my mind on my filter rankings, though, the two reasons why are: 1. Micron rating of 21 (napa) vs 25 (puro) 2. Durable spring (napa) vs stamped metal (puro) Napa Plat is now my No. 2 filter.

Both Mann+Hummel filters. Not really much difference. I used to use Wix quite a lot over 35 years. Not so much now. They were great under Dana and even Affinia's ownership They are definitely NOT what they used to be now under Mann+Hummel which acquired Wix in 2016. Maybe a sign of the times, many more filter numbers outsourced off-shore. I like the Purolator better even though they are both M+H. I personally like Fleetguard filters and Baldwin. Motorcraft is pretty good for Daily drivers or beaters. Supposedly made by Purolator but they have the oblong inlet holes.

@@toddlesiak3837 I agree. Purolator makes some very nice filters. If you look at all of these premium rebranded filters I think you will find that they are mostly made by Purolator. I've been using Motocraft FL1A filters for years on my daily driver Chrysler (3K mile changes). I noticed the NAPA/Wix are a little bit 'cheaper' quality than they used to be. Small changes. I've used a ton of those NAPA-Wix over the years but am leaning to almost all Purolator made filters now. The last Wix cabin and air filters I ordered from RockAuto were made in China. Could have just bought some cheaper ones.

Napa Plat/( Wix XP) "nominal" rating 21um, means 50%@21 microns. In other words, No Bueno. As the NP is made 3/2019, not current, now use same backing as Boss. Also, likely to find louvers now, same as Boss. So all things considered, including and especially efficiency rating...Boss is the winner. But, I wouldn't pay the given price for either. dunno, but the tiny louver holes in the Boss (which i see on regular Purolator's and other brands as well, seem like they could restrict flow too much when super cold weather? I guess not, since they designed it this way but the big holes in the Napa and the majority of brands, give me more confidance for that super cold morning. (e.g. IF perchance our oil wears out before we imagine, prematurely, then in super cold weather it will behave worse and less flowing than it's supposed to when new.

Regardless of design, the center tube is there to PREVENT the filter element from CRUSHING under the pressure of a partially-clogged filter media. Most prefer the HOLES over the LOUVERS, but the most important thing is the construction of the center tube. Spiral-wound is stronger than the straight-seam type, and is the ONLY acceptable type of center tube. I prefer the LOUVERS -- for strength -- there is a plenty of oil flow with the louvers. IF ONLY all oil filters would have that FORD design, with the By-Pass Valve on the INLET END. Peace.
