Also I'd disagree with Rin that they're too old and they should hang it up. They're all only around 51 yo and they're way more aggressive and innovative than most of today's young bands.

Inside the Torn Apart and Diatribes were my introduction to ND in the mid 90's and for nearly 15 years I thought that was the extent of their sound. Holy shit was I wrong. I finally gave Enemy of the Music Business a spin and that album just tore right through me. It was utterly ferocious and it wasn't even the best one! The 2000's albums completely changed my view on the band. I have to give you praise for the sheer effort you guys put into these rankings. Just on the 'Harmony Corruption' sell out thing - at the time in the UK the punk scene was totally dominated by the strict political vibe that Crass had laid out which was super self-righteous and snobbish - lots of punks HATED any kind of metal, even crossover thrash bands got treated like they were Dokken - really bizarre behaviour but it happened... Really good job guys, only thing I'd add is the first 2 Peel Sessions (F.E.T.O lineup recorded professionally by a top studio) should be mandatory listening - that's their best stuff, real head exploding music.
@thrallsofmetal
@thrallsofmetal 3 жыл бұрын
Necrotic Nick- I guess I can see the sellout thing from that angle. Generally I see punk and metal as pretty close relatives but I forget it wasn't always that way. I actually have the Grind Madness as the BBC comp with them, Bolt Thrower, Extreme Noise Terror, Unseen Terror and Carcass. Fucking loved it.

What is the sound gonna be like? That’s how I do. Time Waits for no Slave is my absolute ☝️ the opener, Strong-Arm is a relentless opener and grooves well right into Diktat, another killer riff. Wow! Thanks Guys! This was super informative and very helpful for me. And kudos to you guys trudging through this monstrous discography. That in itself is pretty crazy. Confession time: Poseur Alert: I love Greed Killing. Haha. I always have. I have only ever owned The Code Is Red, Long Live The Code & the compilation, Noise For Music's Sake, which is pretty convenient. Now I gotta check out Time Waits For No Slave. I love Amoral too. Such a different, cool ditty. I've been meaning for many, many, many years to pick up a copy of either Harmony Corruption or Utopia Banished. It appears the latter is the way to go. Now I'm thinking I would love to see you guys (way, way down the road) rate the SWANS discography. That would be another challenging listen, but hopefully rewarding as well. Anyway, keep up the good work fellas!

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I think I would have liked Greed Killing more if it wasn't Napalm Death. It's not a bad song it's just so far removed from their sound that it just feels forced. Amazing job guys! Not an easy task for sure! A couple of things, the early records have a historical significance the outweighs the production quality. Back then those albums were simply insane. Some of the best ND release are EPs, my favourite being Mentally Murdered (1989). Personally I would prefer if you rated each album individually (out of 5 stars) and then presented the ranking based on the average score of each album. Love your stuff!!!

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! These are usually big undertakings but we enjoy the hell out it. We try to rate on our own likes and dislikes across the board and production does come into play there. Grind should sound dirty though so I didn't hit them too hard there on the early albums. I think just ranking them with out the stars is how we want this to go simply because I don't want to clutter the screen with a ton of graphics.

Siege of power is one of my favorite "flowing" fast to faster punky grind songs. God I love so many tracks of theirs. I also Like the song anti body for the way it's put together and the chorus is so bouncy and catchy. More accessible I guess but it still kicks ass. Nazi punks cover is good too. I own the double disc noise for music's sake and the code is red.......the code was given to me by a dude a tattoo shop that bought it not knowing what it was and he said- "Here I know you like this crazy shit" and I said Why yes I do sir and do keep me in mind anytime this happens. He also gave my a bangin' compilation with the Bloodbath song eaten ,C.C. song death walking terror and a bunch of black metal bands on it. Thank's guy who bit off more than he could chew- I guess sometimes free metal is the best metal.

After Sabbath, Motorhead, Maiden and Priest. Napalm Death are the next influential English band in extreme music. Mick Harris was a unreal drummer. His ideas and attitude were a fuck you to everything. Lighting in a bottle. You can't contrive what they were in the early days. I love the early era. But Barney is the man, great lyrics and phrasing. Met Danny Herrera before a Napalm gig a few years ago. A bird had just shat on my mate and he was like oh man, thats too bad. haha. Met Barney and Shane in the venue. Was Power trip supporting too. Both bands were unreal.

I saw them in '87 supporting D.R.I. and Holy Terror. They were running through the chords with each other before they played each song. Totally blew me away. Saw them a ton of times after that (U.L.U supported by Extreme Noise Terror and Bolt Thrower. Supporting Naked Raygun etc.) and after, on the Grindcrusher tour and beyond. The Lee Dorian, Bill Steer line up was by far the best for me. They went from leaders to followers (ironically) when they released Harmony Corruption.

1- Utopia Banished - the songwriting is amazing one of the best death metal albums of all time even with the startup sound on the beginning of all the tracks xD 2- Enemy Of The Music Business - its the only other album that has nearly every song as a standout, probably Barneys best performance, phenomenal rage 3- Death By Manipulation - Im putting this one in here even though its only 4 songs E.P the material is so good it would challenge Utopia Banished for no 1 if it was full length as the production is slightly better, Napalm Death at their absolute prime 4- Words From The Exit Wound - a real return to form after the experimental and more generic diatribes/torn apart , tracks like Incendiary Incoming among their best riffs of any album 5- Time Waits For No Slave - some standout songs and a great production and heavy sound 6- Smear Campaign 7- Harmony Corruption - would be much higher ranked if the vocals were better 8- Code Is Red 9- Fear Emptiness Despair - Big full production but also very cold sounding, making for a magnificent bleak heavy industrial Napalm Death effort 10- Utilitarian 11- Order Of The Leech 12- Apex Predator 13- From Enslavement To Obliteration 14 - Throes - apart from one song Backlash Just Because which is great the rest felt lacking and unmemorable in comparison to other albums, terrible edgy album picture too, not clever or artistic like we are used to from the band 15 - Inside The Torn Apart 16- Diatribes 17- Scum

I wonder if I'm the only one here who would put Mentally Murdered EP at #1 (instead of skipping it, lol). Napalm Death fans I know revere this record as one of the best staples of extreme metal period. It's basically From Enslavement... music form perfected, polished and appropriately produced (raw yet highly listenable). I think what makes From Enslavement and Mentally Murdered so important is that music on these records combines death metal flavored harmonies with the unmatched energy they were borrowing from Discharge (they often mentioned their initial idea was to take Discharge - Why? kinda music and play it as fast as they can). The off-beat vocal structures and slightly syncopated riffs create instant hooks and add a lot of movement to music, especially when it's multiplied by frenetic blast beats that barely keep the time but work perfectly in combination with the off-beat guitar and vocal hooks. Listen to Walls of Confinement - the instruments seem to barely hit the same accents but there is so much energy it will make you go berserk in a second. Once Bill Steer, Lee Dorian and Mick Harris were gone - the music became quite more polished but more conventional and not as energetic to me. And yeah, if they were more skillful while maintaining these off-beat structures AND all keeping good time - it would have been that much better but it's still close to perfect in my book. No, I'm not some hard ass purist either, I'm a fan and enjoyed plenty of bloody moshpits at ND live shows)

Awesome! I expected controversial picks but I am surprised about the consensus around Scum/FETO so low in the rankings. I'm with Rin on Scum though... totally legendary, has to be #1! Side A has the punk attitude/lyrical content and the Venom/Celtic Frost/Bathory inspired riffing, while side B introduces the trademark dual vocals, and of course it's the breakout album for all things blast beats. The fact that it's a "split" is even more fascinating to me, it's like watching history being made. And that youthful uncontrolled energy, it never gets old! Anyways, my top 10; 1 - Scum 2 - Utopia banished 3 - FETO 4 - Enemy of the music business 5 - Time waits for no slave 6 - Apex Predator 7 - Harmony corruption 8 - Smear campaign 9 - Fear, emptiness, despair 10 - The code is red

The EP Mentally Murdered is one of the finest moments of any Grindcore offering. It is only an EP but considered the best of the genre by many. It was the best culmination of the first real consistent line up. Shane, Bill, Mick, Lee. Also, you guys seem to miss that the early genre was defined by the low-fi analog DiY. There is this line between oldest fans and new fans, meaning Harmony Corruption onwards that complain that all the gloss that makes Death metal and Grindcore clear enough to hear everything ruins the DiY spirit of the early work. I also got into Napalm Death when Harmony Corruption came out and really love the Scott Burns, crushed mids thick guitars, death metal Florida sound. To untrained ears Scum and Enslavement are difficult entries. Over time though, given enough exposure to it... I eventually ended up loving the more raw entries of the early work over some of the very well produced later works. Mentally Murdered ended up also being my fave entry over time. Great research you guys did and a pretty phenomenal attempt to digest so much material for a video. Well done. I will also add that Utopia might be my fave record. The song structures, lyrics, and blend of death and grind are at an apex here. -- EDIT-- I will say this... on Greed Killing EP... Antibody... stands out as the best offering from the Diatribe session. Give it a whirl. It is a standout from that late 90s time. Also, on Order of the Leech... Per Capita is really really good. Never seemed to be played live. Great riffs.

Ah, I have a very different experience with Napalm Death I guess. I was never a grind kind of person - much more of a thrash, hardcore and groove fan. So I got into them through their "lost" era - particularly Inside the Torn Apart. I think I like every song on that album. I like Diatribes too but it's a bit more stale I guess. Then when they picked up the grind again, I think they peaked again with Code is Red. I love that album start to finish. The cou0ple of albums right before and after it are great too but Code is Red stands out. I have liked everything they have put out since then as well. Suddenly they became a very reliable band, after 2 decades of shifting a lot every couple of years. Awesome live band as well. Mad respect for them! I remember the 1st time I saw them Barney had broken his leg and had to go on stage in crutches. Not only did he perform, but he occasionally helped out crowdsurfers with the crutch.

It's difficult to review ND output from metalhead perspective exclusively. I mean they were and still are strongly influenced by so many non-metal music styles like post punk, noise rock, industrial and hardcore punk/crust, although it's maybe not that obvious at the first sight to someone unfamiliar with it. For example, about the 'The Wolf I Feed' track, it's quite clear that Killing Joke was the main (let's say primordial) influence there, especially vocal-wise, at least more than Ozzy or Bell from FF were. They come to that perspective from time to time, but ND discography should be reviewed from both metal and non-metal approaches in parallel throughout their whole career. However, you guys have had put a lot of time into making of this video and that should be respected. Keep up that meticulous approach in the future!

You might like the next one, it'll sound vastly different. If not, here are five other albums. Guarantee you'll like at least one. They're kinda like the old Star Trek movies... The good ones are great, the bad ones are truly awful, but on the whole they average out to an enjoyable experience. I couldn't hold to a hard and fast ranking for ND. Today I might rank Harmony Corruption #1, next week Scum might be my top pick. Another reason I'm happy to let you guys torture yourself with the ranking. 😁 My only gripe?
