The frustrating thing for me, as someone who has read about Napoleon, his life, and the people around him, there is great material for a really nuanced take on the legacy he left behind. On one hand, he certainly was a man of the enlightenment era. He introduced some very impressive reforms to French society and law. Elements of his Napoleonic Code are still in place in the legal system in France today. Our modern understanding of Egyptian culture comes from his campaign in Egypt (and no, he did not blow up the Pyramids. They were over five miles away from them during The Battle of the Pyramids.) He brought scholars, scientists, anthropologists to study the culture. At the same time, he was a man who seized power through military force. He was egotistic, which proved in many cases to be his undoing. He invaded Spain due to his own arrogance. He wasn't above forcing countries to his will. He also legalized slavery in the empire after it had been abolished in the French Revolution. There is plenty to dislike about him. There is so much more to Napoleon than just what Ridley Scott presents here. He was a brilliant military leader and politician. His troops worshipped the ground he walked upon as if he were blessed by divine providence. They carried his eagle standards into battle like religious relics, simply because they were touched by his own hand. At the same time he was brutal, arrogant, and to put it simply human. He is one of the most fascinating characters in history, and with everything he did both positive and negative, his story, as well as the story of those who surrounded, such as Josephine, Maria Louise, Marshal Davout, Marshal Murat, Marshal Ney, Marshal Lannes, and so many others, deserves to be heard. I think for me, what really left a sour taste in my mouth before the movie even hit theaters, was how Ridley Scott reacted to historical criticism. Any period piece is going to have inaccuracies. You have to to form a proper narrative. But when historians criticize gross historical inaccuracies, and even lies, and your response is either "Get a life" or "Where you there? No? Then shut the #%@ up!) I don't have the best opinion on your work. As someone who has had to deal with deconstructing the misconceptions of history to the public, it rubbed me the wrong way. TLDR - Not a fan 😕

Kubrick's dream was to do a Napoloeon film - can you imagine how epic that would've been?

Crazy that a lot of people don't know about Napoleon, and he's 1 of the greatest battle commanders in human history... probably the greatest ever. Between him and guys like Alexander the Great, and Julius Ceaser.

I'll give Ridley Scott credit for the battle on the ice, though. It's a fantastic scene rivaled only by Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby goofing around as they portray their characters' silly flirtations.

“French Joker” is probably as apt a description as possible. I was telling people that it wasn’t like Joaquin Phoenix was playing Napoleon. It was more like the Joker was playing Napoleon 😂

So I saw this in D-Box, okay, and I KID YOU NOT, because these seats MOVE with the movie, the chairs actually moved when they were doing IT! It was weird and strange, and it was the filthiest cinematic moment I've ever been immersed in! LOL

You guys should check out the Napoleonic Wars by Oversimplified, really interesting and informative stuff presented in an entertaining way.

About 30/40 minutes of this movie was accurate. The rest was complete fantasy or complete inaccurate history.

Napoleon's physician measured him at 5'2" upon death, by today's imperial measuring that'd be 5'6". Average for the time, shorter by today's standards.

This was the biggest dissapointment ive seen. The hype, and what it could have been..:/

Napoleon was actually average to slightly above average height for his time. The reason why he gets labeled as short is due to English propaganda and the English/French measuring systems were slightly different. Napoleon also looked short because he always stood next to his Old Guard which had a minimum height requirement of 5'10 though most in the Old Guard were taller than the minimum height requirement.

New thought: God, I would love to see your reaction to the original "Waterloo" movie. The amount of extras, the shots, the choreo, it's insane

They should have gotten a younger actor to play napoleon. napoleon was 24 when promoted general, and 30 when he took power in france. Joaquin phoenix is in his 50s playing a 20 something year old character.

I saw this in the cinema. I was really looking forward to it although somewhat skeptical due to the decision to allow Joaquin to use his own accent. Decided to put that aside but regretted it. I don’t think timeline biographical movies work. Ridley should have focused on a specific period of time, or even just the battle at Waterloo. Just his love story would have been acceptable. On a positive note, Vanessa Kirby was great, as always.

You guys managed to elevate a very dark comedy to a light and enjoyable experience, so thanks for that! We are in an age of cinema that seems to be focused on the death and destruction of icons and there are some who would say this is a good thing.

Speaking of Marie Antoinette... If you haven't seen it, you should totally check out Sofia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette" starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman. So good!

This film depicted Napoleon as a man child with an inferior complex, which seems like Hollywood just wanted to besmirch his name. Theres a reason as to why he was beloved as much as he was by the people and why his men return to him after his banishment. The 1970 waterloo film gives a much better representation of who he was while maintaining historically accurate. Plus that film gives a way better depiction of what went down at Waterloo. The best thing about this movie is the action. Also Josephine was heavily “Hollywood”

In Cinematography standards, it’s a great movie…but historically, it’s very very shit. It doesn’t stay very true to history unfortunately. At least with, for example, Fury, you know you’re going into a historical fiction movie. A movie based on real larger scale events, but of course, fictional smaller scale events. In Napoleon, it’s been hyped up as a documentary, but it’s not. And that’s what pisses me off.

I get your apprehension about ‘The Last Duel,’ but if you decide to watch it, I’d love to see your reaction to see what you guys think of it. I enjoyed it.

he actually won the Borodino, but you can say both won. The French army won this battle and made Russia retreat. But Russia also achieved its goal of reducing French troops.

Beavis and Butthead do "Napoleon" - but thanks guys. In his earlier years, Ridley Scott made a beautiful film set during this period - "The Duellists - which I guess you will enjoy. Similarly, Rod Steiger's portrayal of Napoleon in the 1974 film "Waterloo" was superb as was the film, made in an age before CGI.

Yeah this one was a mess. And I know this isn't the only movie to do this but it bothered me that literally nobody in this movie even tried to speak with a French accent. Joaquin also seemed to, for the first time that I've experienced, really phoned in this performance.

My take on this movie: The extras, art department, costume department and effects team showed up to work every day. The script writers and historians did not.

for those complaining about historical accuracy, the actual facts and nuisances of the story just PALE in comparison to the sheer production value. those are REAL BOATS you see there! timber-framed, rigged, gunned floating hulls, as per 18th century standard, made by actual workers, in the year 2023! that is REAL carpentry and REAL cutlery adorning the halls! that is REAL tailoring and REAL goldsmithing dressing the actors! did Napoleon do all these feats we see him do in the movie? yes... so, the movie is faithful. did he take 100 men when the record says 250? who cares!

I got to think...so they lost 3 million. Between them Russia. Then world War 1 and 2 and Vietnam and Korea. And all the other wars we got going on currently we still keep growing as a species. Its insane

Marie Antionette does get a LITTLE bit of a bad rap, but the French Monarchy was WAYYYYY out of touch and had been for years which is what led to the Revolution (obviously theres a lot that goes into this)

I found it amazing, and it baffles me that Americans know shit about a worldwide historical event and character like Napoleon that most of us learn about in junior high, even when The French used the American Declaration of Independence as a template when drafting the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen in 1789 and he massively changed history, politics and economy forever for everyone.

I think this movie was badly represented in the Trailer and teasers. They give you the belief this is going to be a Grand Epic but it was really more focused specifically on Napoleon and Josephine. A lot of research was done into the letters from Napoleon to Josephine over the years which there are thousands of. I still was pretty disappointed in the movie as a whole... but maybe the 4hr directors cut will be better lol

This movie seems like a highlight reel or cliffnotes version of Napoleon's journey that woudl've been more desired to see. Strange storytelling choice. Has Ridely lost it? Thanks for being honest as always Greg.
