Launch and recovery of "Buster," a 10 foot long, 5 inch diameter, all-fiberglass rocket, for my NAR Level 3 certification.
The flight was at Midwest Power 14 near Princeton IL on November 4, 2016. The motor was a Cesaroni M1401 and the apogee altitude was just over 10,000 feet AGL. The rocket was safely recovered three-quarters of a mile south of the launch pad after narrowly missing power lines.

Lucky miss on the power lines there that could have been ugly.

That was beautiful. I've watched a whole lot of the rocket camera vids and am always amazed how little effect the drogue has on the long fall from apogee. So utterly different from what I think I know about it.

Just starting to get into model rockets, this was absolutely incredible (and a level I won't come close to! lol).

Did you used a Mobius Video Camera, and was it installed inside or outside the body?
@DanCrank
@DanCrank 3 жыл бұрын
Yes - it is the old-style Mobius camera, mounted on the outside of the upper airframe in an Additive Aerospace camera shroud. www.additiveaerospace.com/collections/video-camera-shrouds/products/mobius-shroud

@@DanCrank Thanks for your reply. From the responses I got I have decided to go with the outside shroud from Additive Aerospace.Wish me luck on my Level 1 and 2 certifications. Using a LOC EZI-65.

@@nilodavila12 Good luck with your flights! You may have seen mixed opinions about whether to attach the shroud with screws or just with epoxy. I had one that was attached with epoxy to a fiberglass rocket, and it flat out fell off the rocket when it was sitting on my prep table in the hot sun. I think the heat softened the plastic a bit and made it let go of the epoxy (the hardened epoxy was still stuck to the fiberglass just fine). Since then I've always used screws to attach my camera shrouds. Then you have to be careful that you do something with the ends of the screws inside the body tube so they can't snag on your parachute, if they're in the part of the body tube where the parachute is. I usually try to grind them down short with a Dremel and then put a few drops of epoxy over them so they make a smooth lump that won't snag.

DanCrank Thanks for the tips. Just ordered the Mobius and the shroud. On my first flight with a G I’ll flight with a weight equivalent to the weight of the camera. Your tips are also applicable with the attachment of the rail guards. After reading about problems with the Jolly chute release somebody suggested using baby powder to prevent entanglement with the parachute. Any other tips that you could think off would be appreciated, so I could have a successful first time Level 1 certification.

@@nilodavila12 The Chute Release is an amazing device. Just about the only thing I've ever seen go wrong with it is people forgetting to turn it on. Same goes for the camera. It's very helpful to actually have a written checklist and check off the steps so you don't forget anything. Baby powder can't hurt, but I don't think it's really necessary with nylon parachutes (which is what I'm assuming you're using). It's used more for the Estes plastic parachutes that come with model rockets - the baby powder helps keep the plastic from sticking to itself. With a nylon parachute and a chute release, you want to be careful about how you fold the parachute and stow the shroud lines into a neat bundle that the chute release can hold securely and release cleanly. What I typically do is fold up my parachute so the shroud lines are on the inside of the bundle - not wrapped around the outside as you might do with a model rocket. Here (www.aircommandrockets.com/parachutes.htm) is a pretty good sequence of photos that illustrates what I'm talking about - but you won't do that last step of wrapping the shock cord around the bundle. Instead, the band of the chute release will hold the bundle together. I'm assuming you're flying with a rocket club to do your certification flight. Usually the club members will be happy to help you figure these things out so you have a successful flight. For your certification you are required to build your rocket yourself, but you're definitely allowed (and strongly encouraged!) to ask others for advice. This goes double if you're planning to do your level 1 and 2 flights on the same day. In particular, if you're using a reloadable motor, someone is supposed to observe while you're assembling it to help make sure it's correct.
