I grew up with Colaiuta ,studied with some pretty good drum teachers and seen some of the best drummers on the planet live (Williams ,Weckl,Cobham ,Clark) and Walden is easily as good as any of them. I caught him playing with the band Warriors at the Keystone in Berkeley in the 80's and it was the best exhibition of drumming I've ever seen hands down.

When Billy Cobham left the Mahavishnu Orchestra and became successful as a solo artist with his Spectrum album, he was replaced by a young Narada Michael Walden. Needless to say that Narada Michael Walden blew everyone's mind in the 70's. And if that wasn't enough he then became an R&B singer and top producer (Whitney Houston). That might be the reason why a whole generation missed out on him as a drummer, but he was one of the greatest from his era for sure. Just ask Vinnie Colaiuta or Steve Smith who were fans.

@@onazram1 lol nobody is, Cobham is a pioneer of the Jazzrock fusion genre among the likes of Tony Williams, Lenny White, Alphonse Mouzon, Steve Gadd and Harvey Mason. Narada Michael Walden was the next generation knocking on the door. But Narada Michael Walden was excellent and in a lot of ways took things a bit more to the extreme when it came to aggression, speed and precision. His paradiddles were the cleanest plus his loose funky drumming reminded more of the Meters than of anything Cobham. Don't forget that he was only just a kid when he plus Armstrong joined the Mahavishnu Orchestra and still was developing himself. Listen to tracks like Cosmic Strut or Can't Stand Your Funk to get a feel of the difference between Narada Michael Walden and Billy Cobham. Of course you will clearly hear the influence of Cobham on him, but literally everyone that came up during that era was heavily influenced by Cobham since he set a new standard. Just listen to early Terry Bozzio, Dennis Chambers, Steve Smith and Vinnie Colaiuta. Although Steve Smith admitted to have been a longtime Narada Michael Walden admirer even back then when he had just joined the Mahavishnu Orchestra Steve Smith and his roommate Vinnie Colaiuta would go and see Narada Michael Walden who was a real beast behind the drums.

This guy did one of the best songs ever and I cannot find it anywhere. It was the theme tune to Now And Again with an unknown female singer whose name I also forgot. but you can look up now and again and you will hear it. I did not know he was a famous drummer I just knew he produced music for other artist and his best known hits were i shoulda loved you/I don't want nobody else (to dance with you). But brilliant brilliant drumming it makes me wonder if he ever played with Prince same era and everything!

I thought Cobham was the king of fusion drummers until I heard this album - now I'm not so sure. I discovered this album back in the early 1980's, and the lead guitarist in the band I was in wanted a copy (cassette back then). He couldn't believe the musicianship of the whole band. Up until then, he thought The Scorpians were brilliant!

As a drummer I can say Narada is one of my favorite drummers of all time. Up there with Tony, Vinnie. Truly an amazing drummer. My favorite example of his playing is on Mahavishnu Orchestra Visions of the Emerald Beyond. Most exciting drummer ever, in my ear - and you can hear the funk in this solo, I can tell that this is a soul band chitlin circuit player, however much Buddy Rich and Chico Hamilton and deJohnette he has down - and that's plenty. Then of course if you want consistent long-form pulse on the drums, or an ear-worm dance track bed, here's your guy. I am surprised the views aren't more numerous, and the comments not more freaked out

I agree. I was amazed at his speed and facility holding the sticks that way, especially the right-hand stick which he appeared to be holding right at the butt end of the stick instead of leaving a few inches of the butt end sticking out to enable the stick to bounce better -- at least that's the way I was taught to hold the sticks. I've noticed a few other good drummers hold the sticks like Narada, though. One I can think of is Jethro Tull's former drummer Clive Bunker. Of course, he's no Narada, but he was a good rock drummer. They both seem to use smaller, skinnier sticks, too.

Montgomery Denzer stfu! Did it matter? Why do you even feel like it was appropriate to make your little statement about how he hold his sticks? You are a TOY! Technique is a MEANS TO AN END, not an end unto itself. Go away and don't try to influence and youngsters.
