In November of 2016, Atlético Nacional were thrust into the limelight through tragedy, as the plane of Brazilian champions Chapecoense crashed on the way to Medellín, Colombia to play the first leg of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana Final. The football world was devastated by the disaster and just six months later, fate brought the clubs back together for the Recopa Sudamericana final. With the eyes of the footballing world on the Colombian and Copa Libertadores champions, Nacional and their largest supporters group, Los Del Sur, look to put the tragedy behind them and rebuild their reputation from the Narco era when Pablo Escobar ruled the streets of Medellín.
En noviembre del 2016 Atlético Nacional fueron empujados al centro de atención por una tragedia, cuando el avión de Chapecoense, los campeones de Brasil chocó en rumbo a Medellín, Colombia para jugar el primer partido de la Final Copa Sudamericana 2016. El mundo futbolístico se quedó devastado por el desastre y solo seis meses después, el destino trajo a los equipos juntos en el Final Recopa Sudamericana. Con todos los ojos encima de los campeones Colombianos y de la Copa Libertadores, Nacional y su grupo de hinchas más grande, Los Del Sur, buscan poner la tragedia en el pasado y reconstruir su reputación de la era de Narcosis cuando Pablo Escobar era rey de las calles de Medellín.

I am Brazilian and I will never forget what Colombian people did to honor those who lost their life at that horrible accident. It was one of the most beautiful things that happen in football history. Colombia is a place where football is still popular and accessible to all kind of social status, specially poor people. Unfortunantelly Brazilian football is now suffering a lot with the elitism of the supporters because of the construction of new arenas, with very high ticket prices.

It is such a shame to hear the state of Brazilian football currently because although England is the home of football, Brazil is the spiritual home of football with their success on the global stage and their endless passion (sometimes over the top) and fan culture of football. The stadiums in Brazil should be full to capacity with noise and colour but instead the attendances are embarrassingly low. I hope that situation improves soon whilst the rich corrupted bastards stop destroying our culture

This video made me tear up a little bit. My grandmother grew up in Medellin and all of her family still lives there. We all support Atletico Nacional and whenever I go down to visit I'll go to see Nacional play if they are at home. The first fútbol game I ever saw was a Nacional game and it was the best game of my life

People need to get the real lesson here, 2016 a year with so many terrorist attacks, wars, conflicts and in the middle of a tragedy that was the loss of our beloved Chape players and the other victims, many famous sport journalists, Colombia gave a lesson in humanity. To me what they did, how they behaved was a lesson in humanity, respect, care, bigger than the game. We love you Colombia and you can be sure Brazilians will never forget the lesson you taught. Take care Colombians!!!

I was in Colombia just before this terrible tragedy . I watched the Atletico Nacional games in Leticia and San Andres . I even got The football tops in The official Atletico Nacional shop in Bogota cos everywhere , everyone wore the green. Colombian people are amazing, and the country is beautiful . I hope to one day go and see a game in Medellin some day, but its a hell of a journey from Glasgow (Scotland)

Heath, I know as a Spurs fan, I give you alot of crap for being a gunner, but all that aside, this was my first club. My home in Medellín is literally down the road from the stadium and my first pro soccer match was beyween Atletico Nacíonal and Junior for the Liga Postobon title. It has been instilled from me at a young age to love this club with all my heart and soul. I thank you and Copa9p so much taking the time to make this feature and give my club and my ancestral homeland the recognition it deserves. Very insightful. Copa90 always delves to the political and social history surrounding football clubs but this episode should serve as a reminder of our shared humanity. The heartbreak of the pain, suffering and tradegy of the loss of life surrounding the Chapocoense team. But the joy and elation that winning at football can bring. It's a potent mix.

Now I see that we have been cleaning our reputation, and I want my city to be the city of hope, were everything is joy instead of violence. Football is the best way in which we can reach that. Brilliant documentary. As a Colombian, I highly enjoyed it. If you enjoy how passionate Colombian fans are you should check out the story of my team. I'm a fan of America de Cali, who along with Atletico Nacional has the majority of the Colombian fan base. Our story involves being stripped of sponsorship because of the Cali cartel and being relegated for 5 years. In our case, we've won nothing for 5 years and we've stuck by regardless and never abandoned the team. It's a happy ending though, one which could culminates in a semi final appearance (tomorrow night :-D), or a potential Championship (fyi nacional got eliminated by Tolima in quarters lol)

One of the best videos I've watched all year long. I enjoyed watching the passion in the eyes and faces of this fanbase. Why the fuck every time people speaks about Medellin they say: it was dangerous but now it's different. Dude, if you want to overcome the dark times just forget them and say: Medellin is awesome, and that's all. Holy crap, as a Colombian I'm tired as hell of visit any country and people only talk about narcos. Even though, great work guys, I support the rival team of Nacional, it's called Millonarios from Bogotá, but I respect Nacional and people from Medellin.
