Ben Powell and Rob Rossington of The 009 Society join us for another look at narrow gauge modelling. They tell us about what the society can offer and the scope of what it covers (not limited to just 009 but 1:76 narrow gauge modelling in general).
We also look at how the modelling scene is changing for narrow gauge as more and more manufacturers offer ready-to-run examples.
Check out The 009 Society here:

Completely agree with getting stuck in on a kit. I used to do a lot of cheque book modelling, buying RTR models and then getting people to weather them for me. But I saw someone take a chimney off a Hornby LNER J15, and I thought, I can do that. So I did, then I had it weathered, then I tried out weathering. After a bit of work, I then finally got the courage to start an O Gauge Brass kit of an LNER J68....I've never looked back and now I have an O Gauge layout and have built 2 Brass kit loco's, 3 Brass coaches, 2 Brass wagons. Nothing is RTR on the layout. It is 100% worth getting involved in a club in any scale.

Awesome! I think also the accumulation of tools over time really helps, and getting advice on what tools are most useful for a beginner.

British narrow gauge is absolutely amazing. Perfect for modeling. Unlike my 1st RR the PRR! 😂😂😂

A great podcast, definitely agree that narrow gauge allows more freedom with freelance modelling. Fingers crossed Bachmann's quarry hunslets will be out soon, pre-ordered a green cabbed one in Nov. 2019. Also for anyone who might want to start building their own 009 locos I would highly recommend one of the GEM Varikits or the PECO tram loco as they can be modified to fit a wide variety of different chassis.

I consider myself quite lucky with RTR stuff as I model the Ashover Light Railway, which has 3 locos and 3 bogie wagons produced by Bachmann, plus the possibility of some Carriage stock. Still a lot of stuff to scratch/kit build though!

Modelling O scale using HO track is much less fiddly and easier to scratch build. N scale mechanisms always harder to find not as reliable given less weight. My preference for modelling Puffing Billy in Australia. Lots of the scale gauge combination seen at exhibitions in Australia.

Considered a podcast about Model Engineering Societies? Just joined the Edinburgh one and working on 7 1/4" to 3" gauges of rail.

Now some HO scale narrow gauge bogie Diesel's are becoming available with the option of 12mm or 16.5 gauge if people want the correct narrow gauge.

loco makers really should have batches made of just chassis' or just bodies for the bodgers

Agreed! I rang Bachmann once and suggested that. They were not helpful at all and said they "only make complete locos". Fleischmann, a more professional supplier, can supply complete chassis when they are available. Still, Bachmann now has a spares section, so it's beginning to improve.

Some news from Australia of HO Diesels from an SDS models and CGL models partnership for the 3ft 6in narrow gauge dominated states of Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmaina and the few narrow gauge South Australian lines. A landmark that these are to be made with the option of choosing 12mm gauge to get the correct narrow gauge or 16.5mm gauge for those more committed to this gauge : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5Nho7mD39WVnas.html Even some versions to be made replicating the Australian locomotives sold to Malaysia. These 12mm gauge models may provide an unexpected market demand for the new Peco TT gauge track.
