We are Chris and Bex, we purchased this disastrous 60 ft narrowboat over 2 years ago and still have yet to set sail forever due to a leak we discovered on day 2 of owning the boat.
Follow our journey rebuilding the House boat and retiring to the river and canals forever in the quest for an unconventional life.
Today we would like to take you on a tour of the boat, and show you how far we have come, and how far we have still to go.

You guys must be so proud of yourselves you’ve achieved so much and yeah a few minor things still to be finished here and there where you have almost finished but we all do that, they’re just those horrible little jobs. OK still a bit to do but it will be done and we all know it will be done well. I absolutely LOVE the kitchen. Good on you guys, the really good thing is you know exactly everything about your boat which makes it easier to solve any future problems that I hope will never arise. Well done Crobots, love you guys. 💕

When you see it all in one go, as it were, you can appreciate the hard work you've both put Into it, whilst learning how to do things at the same time. Not to mention that you have very limited storage space for materials etc whilst doing it. It must be like one of those old number puzzles lol. Well done both of you 😊

I think you’re right about keeping the Alde. From what I’ve heard, there isn’t much difference pricewise between gas and diesel when it comes to heating, but the issue is that you can only store a limited supply of gas on board. So really the solid fuel stove should be the primary heat source during winter and maybe get an Ecofan to blow the heat along; just use the Alde for occasional bursts, perhaps during spring/autumn when it’s too mild to light the stove. If you’re cruising, just use the engine for hot water. My boat’s got an Alde, looks the same as yours, but the surveyor couldn’t get it to work and said parts aren’t available anymore for that model. It hasn’t been handed over to me yet and the marina is obliged to get it working or replace it so I’ve no idea what I’ll end up with.
@TheNomadicCrobot
@TheNomadicCrobot 6 ай бұрын
your spot on, the Aldi will be used for emergencies and short bursts like you say and we will be eating the water from the engine mainly. good luck with your boat.....plenty of adventures in the horizon

Not all heroes wear cloaks :) Amazing to see it all put together like that. What a journey it has been following you through all of it. I am so happy that there aren't that many whoops left& cant wait for you guys leaving. I think it's smart getting the work done that's easier to do while on shore power& leaving the small stuff for when you start cruising. As I mentioned before, 2024 will be the year for many of us ;) Amazing & fantastic job guys! Truly beyond well done. I am also so happy for you that the light at the end of the tunnel no longer is a train, but indeed is the finish line; that allows you to finally go. Again, you two are Heros. Cant wait for next weeks video.

That little video was so positive that you will have to change your intro from explosions and lightning bolts to show flowers blooming, puppies and kittens, sparkly unicorns and rainbows. Not really. Maybe once would be funny. After all, you've developed a brand. Viewers have expectations! 🤣 The Titan reference reminded me. We have acquired a somewhat smaller household god, known as "Air Stream." I am renovating my study just so it can have a place to live. We had to go smaller and sexier than Titan, which over here has the manly name of Rigid (pretty sure it's the same product-just trimmed in orange instead of yellow). Did you know that the Wombat can be seen from space? After your last episode, I checked on line to get an idea of the extent of the flooding. I wasn't actually looking for it, just keyed in the names of a couple of towns you mentioned, zoomed in, and there she was! Hmmm. If the Wombat can be seen from space, why don't other aliens pay you a visit? 🤔 Just don't invite any Vogons. We already have enough of them on this planet.

Hi Chris and Becks. Great to see the progress here and closer to your end goal. 👍🏻 Just as some info here as I’m not sure, or can’t find the episode where you purchased your new calorifier as you’ll be able to heat your water 3 ways. If you got a Surecal/Surejust one, this is a marine calorifier and you’d need one with two copper coils (twin coil calorifer) so your engine can heat your hot water and the Alde gas boiler can heat the hot water and any radiators you’ll be installing, so thats 2 ways you can get hot water, the third way would be from shore power, with an immersion heater…..the marine immersions for narrowboats are rated between 1000W - 1250W at 230V AC…..great for when spending time in marinas as you can switch this on and heat your water via electric….takes a while to heat the water this way depending on how much water the calorifier holds of course. You’ll find that Alde gas boiler will chew up a 13KG gas bottle in a of matter of days if used constantly, as these are usually installed on hire boats or leisure boats that are used in the more sunnier months and is used to take early morning chills off or late night ones because of the amount of gas these use. Switching to a Webasto unit like an Evo 5 would for sure be a costly exercise but uses diesel and is much cheaper to run. Like the Alde system, this would heat your hot water and any radiators you install. I can’t stress enough how important this system needs to be installed and used correctly to save frequent breakdowns. The other thing with a Webasto heater or any version of these (please not any of the Chinese copies, these are just horrible things and are not worth the tempting price tag) is that they need good DC voltage for them to start and run, so your electrical system would need to be healthy and set up nicely. Like you said Becks, your solar needs seriously upgrading for when you’re out cruising the network. My company specialises in all aspects of Marine Electrical as well as Webasto heating systems for inland waterway boats. Would be more than happy to have a chat with you both on any points here regarding the electrical set up including solar and Webasto heating, even if the heating would be later down the line. You can contact me on justin@exactlelectrics.co.uk 👍🏻🙂

yes we have got ourselves a twin coil, 55 litre in the end. the Aldi boiler will be more a back up and used in short bursts here and there our main source of heat were hoping to get from the engine. The Sebastopol is something we would love to invest in when moneys a bit better....plus it's worth testing the Aldi while it works and just see how we get on with it. Thanks for the heads up on the Chinese ones as a few people have mentioned them...I also imagine there may not be a warrenty. Thank you for reaching out to us Justin will save your email for when we come to that stage, many thanks

There were a few tears along the way but a massive pat on the back to you both for the progress so far. It’s all part of life’s rich tapestry. One query though, a few months back you had a charming gentleman measure up the boat for some bespoke cratch covers, has this fallen through or are they to be imminently fitted? All the best. x

Have you looked at the chinese copies of the wabasto water heaters? Much cheaper.

thats interesting thank you ....whats the warranty like?

I've looked into these, you pay for what you get, if you're going down the diesel heating rout it's worth getting your diesel tank polushed@@TheNomadicCrobot

@@TheNomadicCrobot I wouldn't bank on any warranty. But they were about £300 last time I looked, probably less by now. So you could just buy a whole spare unit to keep on hand. Similarly, you can buy the air/space heaters for about 80quid. I've been using one as my main workshop heater and has worked flawlessly for about 2 years so far. (So have a couple of friends). And spares are pretty cheap and available.

If it was me....(thank the Lord it isn't)...I would live in a van on site. By literally gutting the areas for refurbishment, you would find that progress would happen in a blink of the eye. A bit like decorating a room in a house. Clear the furniture and it takes 2 days to decorate. Fail to do that and you would take ages to move stuff around whilst painting, injury time too stumbling over obstructions! Plan to stay static until 95% of the work is done, if you take to the water too soon, it never will get finished, living with wet paint. dust and mess, is not the canal boat dream that you hope for. Sorry that I appear so brutal, but this is WAR against decay!!! John

its funny you say that, iv said of to bex how amazing it would be to have an extra boat to store things because there just isn't anywhere to put anything. The painting we will probably do on route because were just so eager to get get going but the bigger jobs will be done at the marina , thanks for your comment and suggestion John

In my eyes its not a 100% genuine Nomadic Crobot Episode unless we hear either Chris or Bex mention the words "Bow Thrusters". I encourage everybody to play the Nomadic Crobot "Bow Thruster" drinking game. Go back and watch all the previous episodes and raise a glass to "Bow Thrusters" 🍺 and....🤔dont forget to like and subscribe.👍✅ 😋
