It’s been fabulous watching these (even though I am two years late!) and I am always amazed at your dedication. We bypassed a semi-project in favour of little Agincourt who needs nothing due to work commitments but are now spending time putting our own stamp on her. The hardest thing is not having a ‘bedroom’ it’s either convert the sofa every night or fight for space in the three foot boatman’s cabin bed 😄 Thank you both for my evening entertainment 🩵

Hi boat builders, First thing I was told when I started my plumbing apprenticeship was not to call a wash basin a sink. You wash pots in a sink, so don’t go buying sink taps for your wash basin.

Don't know who you plan to pull your ply straight on the edges but if you fit a 5x1 or whatever size it takes to make a lap joint on the ply and make a runner both side the whole length of the boat, angle one side and OG the other edge with a router, then drill for all the screws through the wood but not the ply. So when you screw and clue the wood onto and up into the ply should give you a straight ceiling line both sides taking care of the bendy plywood. Or of course get some skirting board and trim it down if needs be but that comes in 5-6-7 x 1 which should do the trick plus give you room for any wiring you may wish to add, like a strip of LED lights over Danni's kitchen.
@DanniandJoe

Thanks Arthur, yeah that's what we're hoping will happen - we've made a start (will be in next weeks video!). The LED strip is a great idea!

Have you thought about using LED Strip lightiing in your galley(Kitchen) then you can light up the whole work area with the same amount of power, and you can dim it and change the mood (coloring) of it. Check at your DYI store, they should have it or order it on line.

I highly recommend getting a proper cable gland vice running that cable in through your vent. You're running a risk of damage to the cable insulation, and very real potential for the cable wicking water down inside your ceiling. I do love those WAGO connectors you're using, I use them exclusively for my house projects. The wife and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching you so far, keep up the good work.

The Narrowboat Nomads used wall units as floor units which made one side slightly thinner in the kitchen and seemed to me to be quite an elegant solution to space in the galley On the narrowboat that James built, he laid out the floor plan on the floor with tape to get an idea of how things will look. I am really enjoying your build, so keep up the great work
@DanniandJoe
@DanniandJoe 2 жыл бұрын
Ah that’s a good idea on the wall units, will look into that! The tape on the floor is also handy but I guess you never get a proper feel of things until it’s 3D, with our layout we’re sort of bound by where things will be (as the bed is what it is being a small double it leaves a small path to one side) and the bathroom is bound by the size of the bath etc etc

Getting the waste out of a hole cutter ? I use an Allen key, using the short end to push the off cut out as it gives you a little more leverage. I have the same loo as you and trust me 7 litres isn’t a lot especially with two of you using it., if it over flows it’s a messy job to clean up. Don’t rely on the handle too much so support the container from underneath as you carry it … mine broke within a few months . I’ve found that the fluid smells more than the the solids if left for more than a day or two and so I researched how to neutralise it and found that a mix of baking soda, peroxide and dish detergent would do the job 👍🏻 What I also found was that a mix of peroxidase and and hydrogen peroxide can effectively mask drug abuse. That came in as just the third result gave me 🤣

Just wondering whether cutting the ply on the length, i.e. turning it 90degrees which would mean the panel went literally wall to wall. However, you may have a good reason.
@DanniandJoe
@DanniandJoe 2 жыл бұрын
So it’s roughly 5ft across if you went wall to wall, so you’d only get one piece out of an 8x4 sheet, so rather than buying 8 sheets we used 4, but definitely would’ve been easier to manage and the grain of the plywood would bend better but we’re on a bit of a budget and timber prices are still crazy at the minute

Sorry guys but you did buy 8 sheets so why not use them,the grain should always run the same way as the batten s as it will warp between the battens as you say you have the cost of cedar don't you as well. Just thought it might be best to tell you. All the best.

@@robertwren8878 We bought only bought 4 sheets of 5.5mm for the ceiling (and 4 sheets of 9mm for the stud walls). The ply has settled really well, once the exposed timber strips running down either side are fitted it will be fine

Danni and Joe Sorry I replied to your comment saying you had taken it all out.lol. I was in the construction trade for 50 years that's why I mentioned the ply. Are you aware of all the legislation coming in as to coal,wood,Gas,Diesel and oil? Glad I'm out of it now people have got to find a lot of money with conversions,every house included if there not all electric. You know thinking about it I wonder what will happen in London low emissions on the Regents canal and the river lea navigation to name a couple? God bless.

Hi guys thanks for another interesting and informative video . ....... it seems the composting toilets seem to becoming very popular with inland sailors ( not so with sea sailors ,yet ) . Can to please explain the workings of composting ? I get the reasons for the two compartments but after use does the urinal get removed and rinsed or does it not need it ,also is the receptacle sealed or open ? What happens to the composting bit ? How or where is it desposed ? Sorry for the nitty gritty questions but I'm intrigued and maybe something seafarers could use . Regards Terry
@DanniandJoe
@DanniandJoe 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Terry, no problem at all. So the urinal can be emptied in Elsan points & public toilets I’d imagine would be okay - you can add little tablets to keep the smell down or a bit of eco toilet chemical & empty and rinse when full, we’ve got a spare bottle as well incase we can’t find somewhere sensible to dispose (they come with lids so you can store and transport them safely). Composting wise we need to do some research but essentially you do your business and optional add sawdust, ash from the fire (when cool) or a few other options, once the bag is full it should then be moved into a separate composting area, which can then take a few months to break down into actual compost, then used or id imagine then safe to dispose of in nature (subject to landowners consent), a lot of people have been ‘bagging and binning’ - just binning the bag of poop when it’s full but this is being banned by the Canal and River Trust, this article is a good read from CRT canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/boating/boating-services/water-points-and-sewage-disposal/separator-composting-toilets

Where will you dispose of the contents of the compost toilet? My understanding is that the Canals & Rivers Trust are going to ban throwing bags of 'compost' into general waste bins? I ask because I'm planning to get a boat and I'm looking into compost loos (well not literally, cos that would be weird). Great set of vlogs, really entertaining and informative :-)
@DanniandJoe
@DanniandJoe 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah it’s a shame about the ban but I can see both sides of the argument - we’ll have a separate container for the poop to go about it’s composting duty and then find a use or find somewhere to dispose of it responsibly! Good luck with your search for a boat, let us know if you’ve got any questions 🙂

Just an idea, How about putting the bath across the boat against the bedroom wall shower end at the highest point in the middle, position the toilet on the opposite wall to where you had it. Will that work do you think?

That’s a good option to increase headroom, although no matter where the bath is put it’ll still mean a squat shower but boats are full of compromise

Won't that plywood on the ceiling be pushing downward with all its might for all of eternity, or until something gives? Is this really the right way to do it (I have no clue, myself)? I assume you can't steam the wood and put it in a mold for a month, like in olden times!

Thank you. Weirdly It’s not drooping, it’s actually the tension in the ply as someone else pointed out, the better way would be half sheets and fit them the other way but lesson learnt - luckily the tension has settled considerably and when the timber strips are fitted along the edges it’ll straightened by them
