Michael and Jackie, I drove tractor-trailers for a few years. I always used a fuel additive to prevent algae from growing in the tanks and to prevent waxing the fuel in the winters. Only once did I wax up my filters and that was when it was -50 F below zero. Where I purchased my fuel bragged that they didn't sell additives because they mix their diesel fuel with kerosene and they claimed that it didn't wax up. Many miles down the highway, in the middle of nowhere northern Pennsylvania, my filters waxed up. I was hauling a J.I.T. (Just In Time) load for the automobile manufacturing industry. My engine stopped and I was stranded on a highway with no traffic and no lights of homes anywhere for HOURS. Needles to say my trucking career ended a short time later because of this missed delivery. Post Script: If my dog, Thunderbutt, hadn't been with me I would have frozen to death. (Yes, that was the name of my dog.)

I applaud how diligent Brits are about recycling. Where I live, we know it's a waste of time as the recycling generally ends up wherever the trash is dumped.

I think because we get use to doing it all the time it's strange for us not to. Suppose we can all do our little bit for the planet. Why doesn't yours get recycled? Where about are you? x
@janeingram7331
@janeingram7331 8 ай бұрын
I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Before I moved to my current location, I was the president of a condo association. I had asked our township about what they did with the recycling and they basically said it cost too much money so it too ended up in the regular dump. I reported the truck who took our recycling because it had no cover over the top of the truck and the plastic flew out and littered our country roads. I live in another area around Philadelphia and the manager of the building I live in said there was no recycling even though the building pays for its pickup. I had head years ago that NYC stopped recycling, but I cannot confirm that. You do have a wonderful channel and I do enjoy you and Michael. Jane, Philaelphia@@cruisingontheborder

We lived and cruised aboard for 20 years and never got diesel bug, like you we used an addative, tried to keep the tanks full when possible. What allows the bug to thrive is condensation on the cold metal of the tank and runs down into the fuel where it allows cthe bug to thrive

No need to remove your diesel fuel. Make a fuel polisher with an electric fuel pump and a good filter. Suck from the bottom of the tank (piece of rigid copper tubing) push it through the filter, and return hose into fill opening. You set it up, and let it run until the filter stays clean, often a day or two. It is easy to do as a prevention, more complicated after things are all gummed up. Happy sailing!

Polishing the fuel…not the tanks!! And the ‘bug’ can block the tubes before the filter. We suffered engine failure but there was nothing in the filter. We are a sailing vessel and had to ask the RNLI for assistance…..on investigation in a safe haven we discovered the fuel pipes blocked right before the first filter….hubby has a diesel engine background but this took him by surprise despite all the usual maintenance.

I was wondering if a “pram hood” would be useful. I say this while realizing that some/many bridge clearances are on the “low side”. Would also be practical in certain mooring weather as well. A “convertible” pram hood would be the best if they exist. Anyway… liked this weeks wind filled - rain soaked episode. Not to worry Jacqui …you still managed to look fetching as you were wringing out your hat. 😂😂 Hugs and kisses from 🇨🇦

Hi, great comment and question. Yes a pram cover would be a great idea, however many bridges, as you have seen, are very very low. It would be a real pain taking it up and down all the time. We did Heartbreak Hill at the very end of September and found that many of the locks were out of action, but hardly met anyone anyway. As for recycling, on land I religiously washed and sorted everything. Now, I’ve given up, it’s hard to find a recycling point.

Well done doing Heartbreak Hill, how was it. We enjoy doing locks as you get to meet so many lovely people and spend time with the doing the flights. Ah don't get us started on the old recycling issue. A nightmare. Hope you're still enjoying your cruising. xx

👍👍great videos , why u guys don't stay in a spot for a relaxing few days then move on what's the rush to keep on moving is their a time limit parking up , or u do stay a few days I guess the videos make u look like your on the move all the time beeing busy people 😅 would love to see ya diesel motor and how that all works 😊

Ah David, a great point you raise, we do sometimes stay still for a few days. When we are moving we film every day hence why we have so much footage and we appear to always be moving. Depends upon the location, it depends on how long you can moor there. Some 24hrs, some 48hrs but then often it's up to two weeks and yes we have stayed some places for two weeks, great time to explore and visit friends and family. So pleased you are enjoying them all. Michael has done some engine work on the boat which appear in a few videos.... he is always on top of the maintenance work. Thanks for your brilliant comment.

I think some private refuge collectors like biffa sort recycling at there depot. But the cleansing department in Bath have street public recycling bins that all go in the bin lorry and gets sent to landfill because management haven’t bothered to sort anything out. Council in Bath that is.

We do notice it's different all around the country, this was one of those good examples. Normally we struggle to recycle which upsets us both!! Thanks for your great comment.

Yes Pat it would, we can get a little one in the bow of the boat and that helps with drying things. Not great to have wet clothes in a boat. It's important to keep the air flowing but as we are both fresh air freaks that isn't an issue. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Stuart thanks for the comment. We film every day virtually, the days we don't move the boat a little less so. But it's a journey for us that we wanted to record and we are certainly doing that. This latest video we had over 2 1/2hrs of footage to edit to get the 40 minute video... sometimes we forget what has happened so it's a surprise to us when we edit. I do log our travels each day and have an overview of the journey.... but still I surprise myself on things we both say. It's all very organic and we just say it as it happens. No direction goes into the recording. Hope that helps you understand how we do it... xx

The ONLY way to deal with this is to completely empty and clean all fuel tanks and systems, and I mean empty, steam and purge as much as you can, then completely fill with new fuel and additive. If you take fuel from a sole supplier keep samples and see if you can get them to pay/help, you should keep and date a sample from every fill as insurance. Unfortunately this is a common occurrence.

Good day Both Excuse my ignorance in this matter, & being a bit late, "Diesel Bug" Do you use a special brand of Diesel as i have not heard this happening to cars?
@cruisingontheborder
@cruisingontheborder 8 ай бұрын
Good day to you to. Thanks for dropping us a comment, lovely to hear from you. Diesel bug is mainly associated with red diesel which is a different type of diesel to the one that cars use. Not as sophisticated hence why bugs grow... some of the other comments we have received on this video explain it in better detail than I can. Jac x

any long term diesel storage tanks can suffer with the bug. I dont think its an issue with smaller tanks(ie cars) but maybe it is.

No. no, I think you have misinterpreted my comment. I am not judging or grading your vocabulary. I am studying it. As you know from your years in Texas, we use different words, idioms and colloquialisms in the States. Take "hire boat" for instance. We would say rental boat. I am trying to learn to speak/understand "Brit" and having the pleasure of enjoying some very fine videos in the process.

There are many places where wide beam boats just don't fit. According to the CRT maps, wide beam boats can travel the north and the south but there is no wide canal connecting the two areas. They would have to exit at the coast, transit open water and duck back in.
