Another attempt with the pole-mounted Nikon D90. Cruise boat "Thomas Telford" from Llangollen crosses with Aubrey at the helm and Helen and Phil as cabin crew, followed by Peter and Bev on "Sally". The towpath here is about 90 feet above the fields, increasing to nearly 127 feet over the bed of the river Dee. This view shows just why they call it "The Stream in the Sky", and it probably gives the best impression of the approach embankment from Fron, one of the biggest earthworks in Britain before the motorways were built. Charlie the dog just had to get in on the act, and a young lady in a spectacularly colourful hat illuminates the opening seconds!
The noise is from tree trimming and shredding along the riverbank. Please excuse the dive into the towpath at the end; my improvised remote switch didn't work, and Windows Movie Maker is still on the blink!
The "TT" operates daily between Llangollen Wharf (tel. 01978 860702) and Froncysyllte from the start of the Easter holidays to the end of October or, as this year, the first day of November. She cruises through over five miles of glorious scenery, making one two-hour trip each way with a bus connection included for the outward or homeward journey, whichever you choose to take. A commentary and friendly buffet service are provided. There are a few seasonal-themed "mince pie" cruises in December, too.
Also from the Wharf, during the summer season horse drawn boats operate upstream, where power boats cannot go. See other clips on this channel for Tog, Taff, Stanley and Geordie at work!

You really have to admire humans. These people have taken boats higher than I have ever flown a plane.

Are some folks too shy to give a bit of live commentary or 'voice over' during editing? It sure adds to a video.

@bugdosh 126 feet, 8 inches from the river bed to the top outside edge of the trough. The towpath is about 3 or 4 inches higher, and the handrail some 3 feet above that, say 130 feet above the river bed. The ironwork is 1007 feet long, and the southern embankment 90 feet high at the abutments.

Here's a bit of the history of this now over two centuries old structure: The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (Welsh pronunciation: [ˌpɔntkəˈsəɬtɛ]; Welsh: Traphont Ddŵr Pontcysyllte) is a navigable aqueduct that carries the Llangollen Canal across the River Dee in north east Wales. The 18-arched stone and cast iron structure, which took ten years to design and build, was completed in 1805. It is now the oldest and longest navigable aqueduct in Great Britain and the highest in the world. The aqueduct was to be a key part of the central section of the proposed Ellesmere Canal, an industrial waterway that would create a commercial link between the River Severn at Shrewsbury and the Port of Liverpool on the River Mersey. However, only parts of the canal route were completed because the expected revenues required to complete the entire project were never generated. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontcysyllte_Aqueduct As a means to transport goods, canals were replaced by rails in the mid-1800s. Fortunately, some have survived for recreational purposes.

I'm surprised nobody's made a comment on how the tree cutters and their chipper's noise, takes much away from such an interesting scene.

at risk of sounding thick,does the weight of the boat increase the load on the aqueduct ?
@Tchristman100
@Tchristman100 6 жыл бұрын
No the water the boat displaces is pushed out the ends of the canal keeping the weight constant
@jamiewreyford3958

Dizzy Williams no it doesn't. The boats displacement of the water takes care of this problem. Great question

excellent question, and no because of archimedes principle.
@MrConan89
@MrConan89 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it does. Despite other comments about the water being displaced, for a short time the water rises as the boat displaces it. If, for example, the boat were dropped by a crane onto the water, the water in the trough would rise around it and the load would increase. It would take some time for the higher water to flow away from around the boat.

John Bishop Actually, as the boats occupy just over half the width of the trough, there is a bow wave about three inches high which places a slightly increased load ahead of each boat. The wet trough side can be seen above the surface in Sally's wake. The effect is local and minor, and it averages out over the length of the bridge, but it is there. It would have been greater when the aqueduct was used by cargo boats with their greater displacement, and of course horses are heavier than pedestrians.

@danlefou
@danlefou 6 жыл бұрын
There are railings on the towpath side; you are looking down on the top rail. The canal side does not have railings because (a) the trough edge is at waist height for anyone standing in a boat and (b) imagine catching your hand in a passing upright. Broken wrist quite likely... No one has ever fallen from the boat side, but there have been suicide jumps from the towpath.

I guess its the angle because it looks to me the walking path has a wall about knee high. In the states the first person that went off it there would be a 6 foot tall since that curved over the walkway at the top.

Rajesh Verma that's a tourist boat, taking people for a trip over the aqueduct. They are not travelling anywhere! And it's not the boats making that noise, it sounds like construction work. You do realise that this aqueduct dates from Victorian times and was used for transport before trains existed?
