What went wrong with NASA's Boeing Starliner Mission?
Two astronauts, Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita "Suni" Williams, are currently stuck in space because Boeing's Starliner capsule is unable to make the return journey to Earth. They launched on June 5th in Starliner's first mission carrying astronauts. After docking with the International Space Station (ISS), they were scheduled to stay for eight days. However, the capsule has encountered multiple issues, including five helium leaks, five dead maneuvering thrusters, and a propellant valve that failed to close properly. NASA has rescheduled their return three times, with the latest tentative date being July 6th. These problems are primarily related to Starliner's propulsion system, which is necessary for detaching from the ISS and re-entering Earth's atmosphere. Despite these challenges, the astronauts have been busy performing maintenance tasks and system tests. If Starliner cannot safely return them, they may use SpaceX's Crew Dragon as an emergency backup. This mission is vital as Starliner provides an alternative to SpaceX's Crew Dragon for transporting astronauts. Boeing has faced significant setbacks, contributing to estimated losses of around $1.5 billion on the Starliner program.

It's so pathetic that we've backtracked all the way back to the 1960's and 1970's. Yes, the space shuttles had a fatal flaw; however, they had an impeccable service record, with only one loss due to the shuttle it self. NASA should have used the lessons learned from the shuttles to design a new version. Imagine the first shuttle design was so successful they completed thousands of missions to space over multiple decades, yet our NASA decided to go back to the 1960's instead of moving forward.

Thousands is a bit overrated in the Shuttles life and performances. But agree about going back to the basic.

The Starliner is not stranded in space. It is just a staycation in space participating in leisure activities with a welcome relief to do more testing and troubleshooting. It is a normal systematic approach to problem-solving that is often used to find and correct issues with complex machines, electronics, computers and software systems. Not a problem as far as NASA is concerned. LOL!!!

I also have similar feelings and positive thoughts in this case. They may be taking a systematic approach to avoid even minor chances of errors. I hope they will come back safely soon.

Gov contracts, old airline orders, service orders... Etc. when you're as big as they are, it's hard to fail. If Starliner fails and airlines stop buying Boeing products and they lose gov contracts, Boeing will go under.

It’s the perfect example of being hostile to China and to Russia, which both could help to bring home the US astronauts. Why it didn’t happen to them yet? Because they always planning how to act in such situations and have a plan B in their pockets. By the end they gonna be the ones offering help I know and the US should grab the opportunity. Hostility never helps, friendship does!
