This was the version submitted to the 2013 Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge. For the original version, with a narration by Liam Neeson, go here: • NASA | Dynamic Earth E...
Watch Earth's magnetic shield protect the planet from a pelting by the solar wind. See how the sun's energy drives a remarkable planetary engine, the climate.
This video, originally created by NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio as part of a full-length planetarium film called "Dynamic Earth," was awarded first place in the video category in the 2013 International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge, sponsored by the journal Science and the National Science Foundation.
While the full movie highlights many aspects of the Earth's complexity, the contribution from the SVS depicts the vast scale of the sun's influence on the Earth, from the flowing particles of the solar wind and the fury of coronal mass ejections to the winds and currents driven by the solar heating of the atmosphere and ocean.
The data visualization in this excerpt represents a high point in the Scientific Visualization Studio's work in recent years to show "flows" -- ocean currents, winds, the movement of glaciers. Using data from sophisticated NASA models, the studio's visualizers have figured out how to illustrate the velocities of these natural phenomena.
Dynamic Earth, produced and written by Thomas Lucas, has been shown around the world to an estimated viewership of 500,000.

Everytime I watch a video like this I cant belive life on Earth is an accident, I more and more start to belive it was a purpose rather then an accident, the question is on what purpose.

so incredible in terms of education, visual, information, n astonishment. This video should be watched by every human being so that we as a mankind would always remember to take a great care of what Mother Earth has been doing - Protecting us. Now it's our turn to help her, not just simply cuz she's our home. But in order to co-exist in harmony, we must help one another. With the deceleration of LOVE

So I couldn't really tell what the point of this video was. Most of them have a point. Per the description, it looks like they just wanted to show off that they'd connected some tools and made a visualization. They never said why that was a good idea... Sorry guys, but don't forget to include the motivation.

Mars has very little atmosphere. Long ago it was stripped away almost entirely, because Mars has no strong geomagnetic field. Energetic ions in the solar wind directly collide with atmospheric molecules, tending to remove them from the atmosphere. Typical magnetic field at Earth's surface is about 0.25 Gauss, 2.5 E -5 Tesla. If Mars had such a magnetic field it might develop an Earth-like atmosphere. So, wrap a superconducting wire around the equator. Raise the current until B = 0.25g. Wait.

True but still, if you think about the purpose of life on any planet (which is noone, untill we will not able to create or destroy new planets) it just sound more like a purpose then an accident fro me. Again if yoiu think about purpose of like in space. I can imagine we will be able one day create new suns and who know what, but even if we do, what is the purpose of it ? Stars born and slowly die, there are new planets around them, but they are just a piece of rock no matter if its lie of em.

Yes its even unfair for your generation to find that purpose if you see how people tried to figure it out for 2000 years...Our generation is just a fragment of it, so propably the answers might be somewhere in religion, more then in science. But still it gives me chills :P
