Sam Hornish Jr's Cup Series career wasn't the greatest, but least he'll mostly be remembered for his Indy 500 win and Xfinity success.

I did grow up watching Sam’s NASCAR Career. Though his Cup career was bad, but honestly more NASCAR fans should focus on his Nationwide/Xfinity Series career. I also think more fans should look at his IndyCar career as well! Other than that, Sam was one of those drivers that was amazing in IndyCar, but didn’t do well in Stock Cars (well, Cup).

Hornish's IRL career was a flash in the pan. He benefitted from a high downforce formula car that raced exclusively ovals. He started falling back when more road courses and in a side note also got his dad kicked out of the pit lane after a fight with Tony Kanaan at Mid Ohio. He got out at the right time.

I think Sam Hornish Jr was a somewhat decent Nationwide/Xfinity Series driver. Sam Hornish, Jr's Nationwide/Xfinity Series Stats (2006 - 2017): In 120 Starts, Sam Hornish, Jr got 5 Wins, 38 Top 5s, 64 Top 10s, 9 Poles, Led 1376 of 20096 Laps Ran, 81 Lead Lap Finishes, 17 DNFs, 2 DNQs, An Average Start of 9.3, An Average Finish of 13.7, and A Best Points Finish of 2nd in 2013.

To be fair, Hornish was rushed way too early into Cup. He should've ran a couple of full time Xfinity seasons before jumping into Cup
@michaelsorber7859
@michaelsorber7859 26 күн бұрын
I think the same thing. Had he ran maybe a few truck races and part time xfinity the first year then maybe 2 full years in xfinity with a few truck starts the first year really get a better understanding of the balance of the stock cars over a indy car. Then a few cup starts the 2nd year then move to cup but still run a few xfinity races especially at tracks both series run at for the extra track time he might have done better. Not a super star of cup but a decent career

Agreed; his Xfinity career was pretty decent but like a lot drivers over the years, he got pushed to Cup too quickly and paid for it. Then again, in an ideal world he would've stayed in IndyCar a few more years as he was definitely one of the top drivers in his time in IndyCar.

To this day, the most heartbroken I've been as a NASCAR fan was when he lost the Nationwide championship in 2013 to Austin Dillon by just three points. I've had favorites that have come one spot short of winning championships since (Brad Keselowski in 2020 & Ben Rhodes in 2022) but that one really hurt.

That Penske Mobil 1 livery was always one of my personal favorites He should've been Xfinity champ in 2013 and even got a couple wins when he returned for a few races at Iowa and Mid-Ohio. A motorsports legend for sure, but an unquestionable Cup Series bust
@nascarsteve
@nascarsteve 29 күн бұрын
Another example of being rushed to Cup too quickly. He was so good in the Busch/Nationwide car, had he of stayed there another season he would have probably been ok in Cup. I'm glad you showed that clip from the fall Texas race that year, I was at that race and I think he was about half of the cautions in that race.

Hornish was one of only two drivers who was competitive in IRL before and after the CART teams (Penske, Ganassi, Andretti-Green, Rahal, Fernandez, Mo Nunn) and their drivers started coming over in 2002, 2003 and 2004. (The other driver was Scott Sharp.)

I remember the whole Open-Wheel drivers to NASCAR mumbo jumbo during the late prime to early twilight of my years in the Lenore House in Michigan. What a helluva time to be alive + one of them was my favorite driver after Kyle Petty retired that being Montoya and that was NOT fun! At least Hornish was good in Busch Grand National/Nationwide/Xfinity and that’s what most people should be focusing on and even as an Austin Dillon fan, I’m not afraid to admit as a regular viewer with the fanboy cap off that he should’ve been the champion in 2013 if NASCAR didn’t waste laps under yellow and actually red flagged the damn race + I met him the week of the August MIS race in 2008 at Bruce Campbell Dodge by where I lived at the time and he was very cool! Good video Darian! EDIT: I FORGOT about that 2015 Cup stint with the Pettys the 1st year I moved to Ridgeville in the Sandy Ridge House! Thanks for reminding me and bringing back so many memories!

Sam Hornish's career could have gone on a different trajectory if he had the opportunity to enter F1 instead of remaining in the IRL in the early to mid 2000's as both BAR Honda & Jordan were interested in signing him but Panther Racing & then Penske refused to release him from his contract. Heck for their first F1 season in 2005, Red Bull (who had been the Jaguar team since 2000) wanted to sign him as a way of really promoting their team in the US. However the deal was nixed once team principal Christian Horner found out that the IRL only raced on ovals & that Hornish had little experience on road courses & decided to sign David Coulthard instead.
@danielhenderson8316
@danielhenderson8316 28 күн бұрын
Hornish would never go anywhere in F1. He had difficulty adapting to the IRL when they brought road course back onto the schedule, much less competing against 20+ road racing experts in F1.
@Dat-Mudkip
@Dat-Mudkip 28 күн бұрын
Part of the problem is that, like David Stremme, he ran for Penske when they were at the low point of the team's slump. (Luck didn't seem to be on his side either.) I think in almost any other full-time team he would have ran better, and his later career in Xfinity seems to back that theory.

Danica should've seen how Sam Hornish fumbled in NASCAR as a precaution so she didn't go to NASCAR. The premise of an Indy/CART pilot going stock car racing (post-Stewart) was all too familiar as they went to go bust. But she went there anyway and....... (At least Uncle Sam fared a bit better than Lady Danica)

The top IndyCar teams were tired of Danica playing diva and Andretti was not going to resign her. If she didn't go to NASCAR, she was going to a bottom half team. She also should have stayed in Nationwide/Xfinity for longer than she did and run a limited cup schedule to get more experience, but money talks until it runs out.

To be fair that 77 was never a good Penske car so he isn’t a bust for me. Roger Penske put all of his eggs in Kurt Busch’s basket.

How to be fair the 77 wasn't originally Penske It was originally Jasper Motorsports but over time it became Penske

Didn't Penske kick Kurt Busch into a different team number and make him use his Champion's Provisional so Hornish could qualify for races?

Wasn’t a bust even in the cup series just because you don’t win doesn’t mean you’re a bust

He won some races in the Busch series so I can't really label him a bust in NASCAR in the cup series yes but not as a whole

Yea he didn't do so hot In the cup series but I always thought there was something fishy going on behind the scenes because he would show speed but not results

Sam’s not as much of a bust as he was a late bloomer

Sam was a great driver, don’t think it’s entirely fair to call him a bust.
