There are plenty of great success stories in NASCAR, but for every great career there are tenfold that end in disappointment. So many drivers could have done so much more if given another chance in this grueling sport. So I tasked answering the question of what drivers deserved a second chance to my community tab and their answers did not disappoint. These are NASCAR drivers who deserved a second chance.

It would be interesting if there was a non-points race that drivers get disqualified out of by winning a race in the previous year or ever winning a championship, but allowing the teams/cars to still run with a different driver. I feel like it would provide some great equipment opportunities for drivers like this, while also being an interesting experience for the fans.

Had to look that up, but yeah, except it would be the main event instead of a qualifier, and the cars from big teams would have empty seats to be filled by drivers that otherwise wouldn't have a car. (I assume they don't do that in the open because those cars are being saved for the main event with their usual drivers.)

A fun idea, but good luck getting team owners to put their best cars and Best equipment in the hands of the unexperienced. There's a reason why teams don't just drop promising drivers and their top equipment, it is too financially risky. Imagine A team's best car gets torn up in this event, or even their backup car gets torn up. That is a huge loss for a team

I would love to have seen an alternate timeline where Juan Pablo Montoya could have gotten hired on a good team after parting ways with Ganassi. It took him two or three seasons to really get the hang of oval racing in stock cars, but after that he was fast when the equipment was there. He also got to where he became a much more savvy and patient racer too. Had he stayed in Cup on a good team I think he would have won races; his top ten and top five totals the last few seasons were impressive. But I think in this universe Juan Pablo was getting tired of not winning and when the opportunities weren't coming, he went with Penske's offer to run in Indy car, where he had a career resurgance, and then went to run sports cars. There are only a handful of drivers who have won in Formula 1, Indycar, NASCAR and Le Mans, and Montoya is just about the most versatile driver of his era.

One name came to mind when I saw the title of this video: David Reutimann. A lot of people won't agree but here are the facts: He finished 16th in points in 2010, while a future Cup Series Champion in Martin Truex Jr. finished 22nd in what was the same, if not better equipment than what Reutimann had. Unfortunately, Michael Waltrip Racing saw this as a sign that the equipment given to Truex wasn't matching his potential, and put every one of his assets toward getting Truex into a quality ride while also making room for Clint Bowyer. Having his decent tier equipment thrown into the dumpster had to have taken an emotional toll on Reutimann, and that combined with the lack of knowledge about how to get sponsorship (Went to BK Racing just to get a sponsor!!) led to him never stading a chance afterwards. If that doesn't deserve a stand-alone video, than I don't know what will.
@gabepollock1641
@gabepollock1641 2 жыл бұрын
I honestly think that what hurt Reutimann the most was his age. He was Truck Series ROTY in 2004, when he was 34 years old. If he broke through to the Trucks even 5 years earlier, he might’ve had another go of it after MWR for a team better than BK Racing.

Ty Majeski. A little known fact for us in the States is Marcos left Nascar to go drive for Penske back in Australia in . He ran 6 races in 2015 and then decided he had enough of racing. Johanna Long definitely, I was a huge fan of her's when she ran in Trucks and Xfinity (and I haven't had an Xfinity favorite since), I felt like her career was shunned by all the attention focused on she who shall not be named (the one who drove the GoDaddy, Tax Act, and Natures Bakery cars) She took a team that was a near backmarker in that 70 ML Motorsports ride, and took it to top 20 finishes, even a few top 15s as well too, she did well with a ride like that. Drivers like her and Trevor Bayne (who I also really liked too) would be perfect for a Truck Series team. Casey Atwood if giving the chance like Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney? He would have won races. Buckshot Jones, a popular driver who was a fan voted favorite for the All Star Race, could have been winning if he got some years like a young talent. Hermie Sadler was the better driver than Elliott in the lower division, but he never got the big rides in NASCAR. Matt Crafton, Jay Sauter, Jason Keller and David Gilliland can be the journeyman like Mark Martin. Mark Martin failed cup and went down to ASA and ARCA, and finally got a deat with Rousch. I’ll echo all the ones saying Johanna Long, or Johanna Robbins, as she’s known now. But as a mom does she still have the fire. How does that change a woman’s perspective? I assume a lot more than being a dad affects a man. But if she still wants it, I’m confident she could be a regular Truck or Xfinity contender in ever moderately okay equipment. A few runs this year and a full-time ride next year, and I bet we’d see her in Victory Lane before Hailie Deegan. Which is not meant as a knock on Hailie. It would be great to see, for the first time in maybe ever, not just one but two genuinely capable and competitive women out there.

I’d rather see him make a one-off appearance as a co-driver for the Bathurst 1000. After watching footage of him in Australian v8 Supercars I appreciated what we got to witness in NASCAR a lot more. Guy’s a legend.

I don't know if he's gotten a chance at the big leagues yet (I've been following NASCAR off-and-on for the majority of my life), but maybe Sheldon Creed? He's proven he can drive and beat the best in the trucks, it would be interesting to see if he could compete with the guys in the Cup series.

Ambrose was much better on ovals that it seemed, he was just never in top level equipment. He isn't interested in racing anymore, but I definitely think "Road Course Ringer" tag that he got was unfair. John Hunter Nemechek is someone that would have been good in a playoff caliber Cup ride I believe

JJ Yeley. Dude was rushed very quickly. I think over time racing for underfunded teams has helped him. He’s become a consistent driver and at times has outran his equipment. Feel like he would be a good fit for a mid tier team.

One name I’m surprised wasn’t on here is Elliott Sadler, the man lit the world on fire in the Busch Series especially during the 2010s, finishing 2nd in the points 4/8 years he was active in the 2010s. Had he been given a good ride in the late 2000s and 2010s, I think he would have been someone much similar to Ryan Newman

Jeremy Mayfield…his alleged drug problems were never conclusive and I feel like Evernham cheating on his wife with Crocker played a big role as well. I believe NASCAR has even since said he would be allowed to complete again. Maybe not Cup or Xfinity citing his age, but he would be another good wiley old veteran in the Truck Series that could easily rattle off some wins.

I don't got anybody for second chances but I got somebody who should try his hand in a nascar. Romain Grosjean. He's got the talent and the experience. He drove for Rick Ware in indy car so Rick could plug him into the 15 car or something for a road course race or something. Especially with the new cars being great on road courses and the fact that RWR has some of their better runs there. Maybe he could do well in a one off. You never know.

It's always funny to hear people insinuate the Wood Brothers Racing is "basically Penske." While that affiliation is there, the drivers of those cars consistently aren't as good. Other than Ryan Blaney in 2017, the Wood Brothers racing team has finished thusly: 2016 (Blaney): 20th 2017 (Blaney): 9th 2018 (Menard): 19th 2019 (Menard): 19th 2020 (Dibenedetto): 13th 2021 (Dibenedetto): 18th So out of those 6 full time seasons, Dibenedetto has had two of the three best seasons statistically for them. Of course, we all know that Dibenedetto was only given a terminal 2 year contract with WBR, but he still performed quite well in a ride that does not have the same speed as the Penske cars. Now let's compare Dibenedetto to Christopher Bell at Leavine Family Racing. Bell and Dibenedetto accumulated the same number of top 10s, and Dibenedetto accumulated more points during the season than Bell, yet Bell was automatically moved up to JGR. Of course, Bell had a stellar Xfinity career, but Dibenedetto never had access to the same equipment in Xfinity. Matt Dibenedetto is more than deserving of a mid to high level cup series ride considering how he performed compared to others in the same equipment. It is just pathetic that some people can't accept the political beliefs of others and demand that they keep their mouth shut and/or conform to some ballless and neutered form of compliance that disallows individuals from expressing even the most benign of opinions. "Oh Matty D said 'Let's Go Brandon,' and we must punish him for that." Jesus Christ.

Good drivers can outperform bad equipment but those drivers are rare. I don't think every driver deserves to in top tier equipment that's why they aren't. To drive for teams like Hendrick, penske and jgr you have to outperform lowe tier equipment. Bell did that at leavine, larson did that at ganassi and blaney did that at wbr. They deserve there rides because they showed they can put an average car in a great position
