My mom (7 months pregnant) and I (6 years old) waited 4 hours in a hot parking lot for Michael Waltrip. This was in 2005 before Chicagoland. I brought my favorite diecast, his 2004 Stars and Stripes paint scheme. He ended up being late to the engagement due to bad weather in the town he was leaving from. The line eventually began to move once word spread that he had arrived. Kid you not, the excitement rejuvenated me. That wait took FOREVER in the perception of my six year old self. The moment we got to the front of the line, it was surreal that I was seeing him in real life. He soared above me like a skyscraper. He knelt down to get a picture with me before signing my diecast. I’ll never forget this. I always had this reluctance around autographs. As a kid, I felt that autographed items couldn’t be worn or played with anymore. When he asked me if I wanted my car signed, my mom urged my approval. I reluctantly said “yes”, but I was astonished when he signed on the windshield of the model. Now the car really couldn’t be played with. How could the imaginary version of Mikey inside the car see while I was pretending to drive it around the track. Now I really couldn’t play with it. As a 6 year old, I was upset by this. Looking back at 24, he signed in the right spot. As for my pregnant mother, Mikey signed her baby bump. My sister got signed by Michael Waltrip and doesn’t even know it. Undoubtedly one of my favorite childhood memories.

At Pocono in 2017, Matty D and Jeffery Earnhardt we’re walking out of the garage area and to the track, but obviously signed some stuff on the way. They were having a conversation when they came up to me, and then I remember distinctively Matt turning to me and said “Hey kid, remember when the 32 car actually used to Go Fast?”

The fan interaction level of NASCAR really is unmatched compared to the NFL or other sports. The level that fans will go to in order to show support of their favorite driver is really like no other sport. One of the things that makes this sport so special.

My parents saw Ernie Irvan at our local Walmart a couple years ago. When i was on vacation and walking in Gatlinburg Tennessee i saw Ron Horniday pushing his dog in a stroller. I also met Mike Joy at Hickory for a late model race, was just standing there so i went at got his autograph. Idk if this counts but im close friends with Scott Riggs. We aren't close friends but we know Josh Berry and Denis Setzer. Those are my best moments with Nascar drivers

Back in 2016, my husband and I were feet away from Jeff Gordon and Danica Patrick. At Bristol this year, my husband was walking up to the gate where our seats were, and a golf cart with Daniel Suarez drove by. Both experiences were pretty neat even though we didn’t necessarily meet drivers as seeing them pretty close.

As an Aussie, one of my favourite events was Bathurst. I’ve camped there a few times, and one of my favourite interactions was wandering the pit and looking at Ed Albenica’s XB Hardtop. The pit chief let me sit in the car, check out all the engine, even underneath as the car was up on jacks. Then Ed was chatting with us and asked us where we were sitting. We told him, and then when they were out practicing, Ed would slow near us and do burnouts and rev the engine right up. That was real awesome.

I have many favorite drivers that I have stories on how I met them in crazy ways. But the one I loved the most was ken schrader. I met him a couple of times at the local race track that I raced. He would show up about 1 time a year for his modified class. One year he showed up and I had a massive infection in the right side of my face( my eye was swollen shut and hurt like I’ve been shot).I talked to him before the race and he noticed it and asked if I was driving. I told him that I had to race otherwise I’d lose the points lead in 2 classes. After winning the 2 feature races( in 2 #3 cars that looked like a dale sr. car)He walked up to me and told me I was as tough as Ricky Rudd. What he said will stick with me forever.

I have met at least 50 drivers at the track, but it's the off the track incidents that stuck out Richard Petty never forgets a fan even if its been years since they last met, and he never, ever is rude to anybody Dale Earnhardt was a man who kept his guard up, but was always cool if fans were respectful of him, but you had to earn it. Sat and ate lunch with Jimmy Spencer and Mark Martin, cool guys. Alan Kulwicki snd Ernie Irvan were both regulars at the Arbys i managed back in the day, both were friendly. Rusty Wallace was a real asshole to everybody. But the best was Kyle Busch, who actually stopped traffic after a race in Martinsville because he saw a kid wearing M&Ms hat and shirt, called the kid over and signed his hat and really nade that kids day. I was less than 10 ft. away the pure joy of that kid made me a Kyle Busch fan forever.

They were just talking to a group of fans. And I said hello to Bobby Allison as I really liked his racing in the day. Cale pipes up .... Oh nice....I had no idea who he was till our bass player who was a fan of his said his name. Of course I knew him by name. Had no idea what he looked like. Others.... Dale Sr. Dale Jr , Richard Petty , Junior Johnson, Kyle Busch , Kyle Petty, . They were all really nice to talk to.

went to the Brickyard 400 in 2001. The day before the race despite the fact he didn't qualify my favorite driver Kyle was hanging around in the garage area. He saw I was wearing a Kyle Petty shirt and invited he down off the overview the fans were on to look over the garage and signed my shirt. Also my dad used to own a Heating and AC business and got a lot of his supplies from Granger who sponsored Greg Biffle in the truck series. My dad let me come with to a event for the business owners and that's how I met Greg Biffle.

Nascar was racing at Kentucky Speedway my uncle happen to be listening to AM radio where they announced he was eatting dinner with fans as an Outback not far from my house. This Outback was a actually an hour or so from the track. My guess he flew into a small airport first had dinner then headed to the track. We didn't pay to have dinner with him it was $50 a person. Since the whole place was practically empty other then the staff those who payed and a few other familys on our side. He came over said hello signed things and took pictures.

I’m at Kevin Harvick at the Daytona 500 on the biggest Kevin Harvick fan and Kevin was leaving to go with his PR guy and his PR guy told him to turn around and look and take a photo with me that was my favorite moment ever. Also got a pic with Cole Custer and some other guys too

I mean, not a driver but at the Coca Cola 600 in 2018 when we were heading to our seats, someone noticed us in our Kyle Busch merchandise, and it was no other than his and Kurt’s mom, I even got a hero card signed by her

I like your description of this. But I have to say the most immersive and interactive racing experience for fans is NHRA Drag Racing.

I've been able to see a lot of drivers up close but as far as meeting and getting to talk to a driver, I met Jeff Gordon at one of his celebrity poker tournaments in Las Vegas years ago. I was standing outside the door with one of his diecast and a new sharpie and he walked past me probably 4 times before finally stopping and grabbing the car out of my hand to autograph it, my sharpie took a minute to work because it was a new one, I could tell he was a little irritated about that. NASCAR used to come to Vegas during the offseason for pre-season testing & it was there that I saw lots of drivers but I actually got to talk to Kasey Kahne, Ken Schrader, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr & Ron Hornaday. Pretty awesome experience...
