Hey Ian, you should definitely check out more Clipsal 500, was a awesome event, i went every year ( i used to live 5km from the track, could walk to the event ) It was 4 days of motor racing, show and shines, off track entertainment and 2 or 3 concerts every night of the event. It was usually run in March, so you never knew if you were going to get scorching heat of a late summer or pouring rain and was usually the first race of the season, concrete canyon at 60C+ in the cars, a lot off the drivers used to say, Bathurst was the big race but Adelaide was the toughest race, just the heat and tight track with only a few really good passing spots, and coming in cold from the off season, was a epic 4 days.

@davidivers6261

For some background, Improved Production, as the name implies is production based cars. It's a very popular class among competitors but doesn't get much TV attention as it's an amateur category (which is not to say they don't take it seriously!). Basically the rules are: must be a production car that fits the definition of a "Touring Car," so sports cars aren't allowed ( RX-7s are allowed because they were run as Touring Cars here); engine modifications are allowed, engine swaps are allowed but they have to be from the same manufacturer (so no putting an LS in a Ford, for instance), turbos are allowed but must use a restrictor, suspension must be the original type but springs & dampers can be changed; tyres are a spec tyre which is technically a road tyre but is really more a grooved slick, there's also tyre width limits based on engine capacity. Most competitors build their own cars, it's relatively cheap to get something running (that Yaris, for example, was bought near new as a flood damaged but usable insurance write off for a fraction of the cost) and there are races in every state, including a national final every year. Great class, great bunch of people

That, my friend, is what we call "Racing for sheep stations." One thing I noticed was a big duallie burnout skid on the track. My guess is that was laid down by the Bandag Bullet. You should really check that out. Bandag is a truck tyre retreading company, and they built a truck specifically for drag racing and burnouts just to show how good their retreads are. It's a beast! I've noticed a few others have recommended the Finke Desert Race. Definitely worth a look, especially Toby Price and his story. And that leads me to mention Matt Mingay as well. Definitely check him out. Those guys are absolute legends.

We used to have stadium trucks come over from the states and race on that Adelaide circuit - was insane to watch! I’ll link some up on Discord Adelaide started off as an F1 track and after Melbourne stole our F1 race it became probably the second best round of the V8 Supercars after Bathurst. The V8’s used to be a support race to the F1’s and you’d often spot F1 teams watching our super taxi’s over the pit wall.

For a little bit of context, improved production has 2 classes, under 2 litre and over 2 litre. The civic is in the under 2 litre class whereas the 86 is in over 2 litre class. Multipliers to the cubic capacity are added for turbocharged cars also to even the playing field somewhat.

The blue thing is a rear wheel drive AE86 or Toyota sprinter. They run a sick little engine. The engine has an 86 mm bore and stroke and it helps them spin up high rpm really quick. Yes , Bathurst is the holy grail but Adelaide was astronomical. I went over to the very first one in about 2000. It was that good I moved there from Victoria. The early years of Gen 1 Supercars was just full on. The track itself is a modified version of the original Australian F1 track. The racing was only a part of it. There used to be sideshows for the kids, food and drinks everywhere and simulator rides, Air Force flyovers in the F18. It ran for four days and I absolutely loved it. I was in the biggest crowd there on record and over four days there was just shy of 300,000 people through the gates. But like all great things, Supercars dumped it. Inaugural sponsor Clipsal went into negotiations but that was it. Adelaide city council didn’t put up a fight either now it’s history despite the event generating tens of millions of dollars every year. It was money in the bank. R.I.P. Clipsal 500. 😞
