The I5 turbo is a sound you never forget. The grand-daddy of engines for the to be VAG group. This engine is called an "anchor" as it sticks way beyond the front axle and when you let off the gas the thing just drops the nose as you threw an anchor. Same time, this engine is almost indestructible, it came in Group B with the tech knowledge of Porsche in the turbo work. This thing can handle 800+ HP on a factory block and a wise tuner.

The group B i5 used over 1ft long head studs that went past the crank centreline,it's a totally different animal
@dreci3001

@@Realtime1501 A foot is not enough to go past the center line of the crank from the top, but yes it was different. The Borg Warner RS 7200 turbo compressor wheel was also space tech in the 80s, but the engine is basically the same as in the recent TT RS (although less sturdy) and basically every 2.5 TDI 5 cylinder from VAG. The 1.9 Tdi and 1.8 Gti were all built compared to the I5 turbo. Volvo has an I5 turbo as well and they use a girdle on the bottom end compared to METER long studs to hold everything together. 🙂

Hey there, couple of tidbits on Audi's race programs and the engineering of these iconic cars. The "turbofan" rims are infamously cool and have had somewhat of a resurgence over the last decade. The reason they exist is bc wheel wells are aerodynamically notorious since they often struggle to evacuate brake cooling air and tend to trap the fast moving air underneath the car on top of that. When cooling brakes, the evacuation of the cooling air is almost as important as the brake ducts getting it there in the first place. This is the reason modern LeMans prototypes and aero focused race cars like the Viper ACR / GT3RS have vents (or straight up a hole) over the front wheels which is intended to remedy that very issue. The solution Audi chose was brilliant but a copy; Porsche had 'invented' the trick for it's 935 race car which also competed in Trans-Am to cover the rims with a flat surface on the outside for less drag and mounting blades in the 1-2 inch space between the rim and the cover which are bent in direction of the wheel turning so basically it's an air compressor which forces the high pressure cooling air out of the rim and by extension the wheel well. Two birds with one stone! The other worthy mention is the AWD system Audi had developed which uses a really neat trick: Imagine how in a traditional AWD car with a longitudinal engine there's usually a transfer box connected to the gearbox by a very short drive shaft which then sends power to the front and back diffs through 2 additional drive shafts. The front axle drove shaft therefore needs to be routed around the exhaust headers, steering assembly etc which makes most AWD cars have a very high hood. Audi had patented a gearbox combined with a transfer box at the end of the output shaft (read this twice) which sent power back *through the output shaft of the transmission* to the front wheels. I repeat: the gearbox output shaft is hollow and houses the drive shaft for the front wheels while spinning in the opposite direction from the output shaft with the rear wheels powered like a traditional RWD car. The front drive shaft ends just a few inches behind the bell housing, is split and comes out on either side of the gearbox. This is a truly ingenious design which was responsible for Audi insisting their AWD was so very capable and made them invest loads of money to advertise it through motorsport. The drawback of this design is the entire engine block has to be placed in front of the front axle or rather the gearbox needs to be in line with the front axle which makes equal weight distribution really difficult so Audi moved the radiators and oil coolers to the rear of most of their race cars. Still, a packaging masterclass that quattro system. It's important to note how motorsport was not only seen as a simple advertising exercise by Audi since they were first to try and sell people on the inherent value of AWD cars, be that on tarmac or loose surfaces, the good old "Race on Sunday; sell on Monday" philosophy. At the tragic end of Group B in 1986, they made the decision to to join the Trans-Am series in '88 and could carry over most of the drivetrain from their rally car. The engine in the Trans-Am Audi was the same as the latest version of their rally car: a 500-550hp 2.1L turbo I5 with SOHC running on 2.8Bar (40psi) of boost, basically their tried and true rally setup which was quite reliable for the time. They weren't the first team to chose a small displacement turbo engine as Porsche and Nissan had both done it in previous seasons. At the time, the US competition did not have an answer to this kind of car. It's ultimately self explanatory why they won the championship that season: All other cars on track were RWD coupes with basically the entire field running NA V8s which of course struggle for traction on corner exit while the Audi more or less could just floor it at the apex. The top 4 competing brands of the '88 season being Chevy, Oldsmobile and Mercury (Ford I guess?), all of them bested by the new kid, Audi. At the end of the '88 season AWD cars and foreign produced engines were banned from Trans-Am which made Audi quit the competition but they already had a prototype in the works for another competition. They joined IMSA and turned another racing series on it's head, but this time there were *waaaay* less regulations to follow compared to Trans-Am. The IMSA Audi 90 may look like a widened version of the Trans-Am car but was in fact a completely different chassis and a completely different engine block. In Trans-Am, the regulations stipulate the roof of the car to be made from steel, it could only be as long as the original road car and I believe they had to use the original floor pan of the production car while the IMSA 90 was just a steel roof with a tube chassis underneath from front to back with removable fiberglass body panels. The engine of the IMSA 90 was an all aluminum 2.2L turbo I5 DOHC with adjustable wastegate running 2.3-3.6 bar boost (35-52psi) producing an eye watering 720hp. In 1989... Still impresses me. If you ever get to see the engine, it becomes quite clear they went all out with this one. The titanium head studs which are normally bolted to the engine block instead run the entire height of the engine and end at the dry sump oil pan, almost as if you're using a ratchet strap all the way around your motor to keep the cylinder head from lifting off the block redneck style :) The Audi V8 quattro DTM was raced in the German touring car championship (DTM means just that) from 1990 onwards and was subject to a lot more regulations than Trans-Am and IMSA. In DTM, the original dashboard and doors had to be used and turbos had been banned in '90. The production V8 was relatively small at 3.6L but in race trim it revved up to 9.500rpm and apparently was shifted regularly at 10k. When introduced, it produced a cool 420hp but in the '91 season it produced over 460hp. Yes, it sounds absolutely gorgeous. The gold BBS rims are iconic, too. It's worth mentioning how 90's DTM was dominated by NA I4 engine coupes while this was Audi's full size sedan with its biggest production engine, which is pretty cool but also meant the Audi was a lot heavier than his competitors. Merc and BMW were supposedly some 320kg (700lbs) lighter but could not compete on high speed tracks since their NA I4 engines 'only' produced up to 350-380hp at full song. Since older Audi seem to be to your liking, I've got a suggestion I can highly recommend: 3 years ago, 3 of the Hoonigan guys visited Ingolstadt and since at least 2 of them are German car fanatics (the other one is a rally fan so he's just as into it), they were shown around their "secret stash" of priceless race cars and prototypes which are not open to the public. It's almost 30 minutes of old Audi race cars ranging from 1919 to today and I watch it about once a month just because I truly wish I could enjoy seeing such an extensive collection or even owning any of such great cars myself once in my life. I can't overhype it, it's absolutely brilliant, sadly no engine noises :( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7-RbKSD373Uo5c.html Cheers Ian, I hope you and yours are doing well. I knew this would be a long one but then I had to add this and that.. So yeah, I love old Audis, too :) Have good one!

I worked at the Porsche/ Audi dealership in Colorado Springs in 1986/87 when Audi brought the Coup Quattro rally car to run the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. “The Race To The Clouds” They had 3 engines for the car, a 400, a 500, and a 700 horsepower turbo 5 cylinder. They used the 500 horse because the 700 horse was too much and would just spin the tires on the straights on the still gravel road. It was awesome to have the car in our shop and to be on the mountain to watch it run.

I had a tuned Audi 200 turbo (i5) from 95 to 2000 with a stainless exhaust that sounded amazing, it was addictive and tended to make you drive in a manner the attracts police like flies to shit. I still reminisce about it to this day. Like all things, it probably wasn't 'fast' by modern standards but was quick enough that it never stopped raising my heartbeat.

I remember when Audi came up with this Audi GTO model which was based on the Audi 90 quattro in these days. Audi has been looking for a new challenge after dropping out of the WRC. They wanted to conquer the American market and start by participating in the GTO series. Audi was able to secure the participation of Hurly Haywood, Scott Goodyear, Hans Joachim Stuck and Walther Röhrl as racing drivers. Röhrl in particular played a key role in setting up the car. He still works in this capacity for Porsche today. In 1990, Audi left the GTO series again and started with the V8 in the DTM with Stuck as the driver.

what you might be interested in is the birth of the name "Audi". Back in the year 1928 there were 4 automobile producing companies were put together under one common name. These were "Horch" (german command for "listen !"), "D.K.W." (Dampf Kraft Wagen - steam powered car), "Wanderer" (cars only producing company) and "NSU" (a short form of the town of Neckarsulm, where the company was lacated). But there had been a term within that contract that said they were NOT allowed to call themselves "Horch". So they used the latin (Rome, year 0) translation for it and called it "Audi", what means the same 🙂

IMSA GTO was the top level touring class for American racing until the mid 90's where the cars were tube framed monsters that had to be powered by production based engines from the manufacturers. They had large wings whereas Trans-am had NASCAR style spoilers at the time. This meant you had lightweight machines upwards of 700 hp from numerous manufacturers competing. Some of the most dominant ones being the audi 90 and the nissan 300zx both of which had rules introduced to neuter their speeds.

When Audi went to race at imsa and DTM, they were laughed at until Audi won, then they said they were cheating because it was impossible to come into a race Serie and win from the start, but Audi did there home work and found out what they could and not do, plus they had great drivers like Hans Jochen Stuck and Walter Röhrl the Rally World champion, they were so good they changed the rules and Audi said kiss my ass bye, the same happend when Porsche won everything in the late 60s and 70's they changed the rules then too, the other race teams in the DTM started crying but they could not do much because the Audi was heavy compaired to there race cars like MERCEDES and BMW even OPEL who all used two door and rear wheel drive cars, Audi had four doors and four wheel drive and a lot less Aerodynamik as the others but still won, FOUR WHEEL DRIVE baby was the answer, they changed the rules so many times it became stupid, sorry forgot ALFA 147, yes it's always because they changed the rules it became too exspensive and ALFA and OPEL could not aford to race, then the DTM was gone for a long time until the 2000s when she came back with new rules so every car had the same Aerodynamiks and Power output, not bad but I lost my intrest in the race Serie, the Comeback was not as good as the original for me.

i remember the trans am series banning all wheel drive cause Audi dominated they didn't care that the muscle cars were 200 - 300 bhp more than audi they claimed Audi`s quarto system was to much of an advantage.

Another wonderful sounding inline 5 is the Volvo 850 T5R. A station wagon shaped like a brick that would leave BMW's at the traffic lights and give Porsche 911's a seriously hard time. A large 4 door family car that does 0 to 60 in 6.6 seconds, it will hit 155mph and that's the stock factory setup! these are easily tuned making them even faster!! So good the UK police used them as motorway pursuit cars. That's quicker than a 1996 Mustang GT!!!

I am new to this channel, but I have reliazed that you like Austria so you might also like one of the best Offroadvihcles of all time, the Puch Pinzgauer, which was built by Styer Daimler Puch in Styer Upper Austria. I also noticed you like rallying, so I thougt you would also be interessted into the legend the myth the one and only goat Walther Röhrl himself, who destroyed all times at Pikes Peak at the time and won many rallys with ease.

stu stu's before VW/Audi implemented Diverter Valves. the only I5 still running is the RS3's only come in a 4dr Hatch or Sedan. there is the TTRS but they were 2009-2014, the RS3 replaced it never to be in a Coupe or 2dr again as the R8 v8/v10 replaced that style.
