Hello from Germany! Porsche is the best sports car there is! It is even suitable for everyday use you can take it to the racetrack and you can also use it to go shopping! Driving these vehicles was hard work, including the clutch you had to pedal with a pressure of 70-80 kilos! These were still racing cars for real men! They were very difficult to master and you had to have a lot of courage! I have a friend , his father owns a Porsche 917 K from the Can- Am series! You definitely have to watch a video of this Porsche! It was a monster, many racers were afraid to drive it! Greetings Nephilim

The reason for them using a four speed gearbox was that they didn`t have a five or six speed strong enough for the engine. They also drove them with a rigid rear diff because a normal diff didn`t take the load from the engine. Brutal cars.

Hello Ian! It might not be your cup of tea, but this person worked in most iconic Citroens , Peugeots and Renaults, (but not limited to) from the '70s and '80s + some rare and iconic cars from that era like the SM and other oddyties. It was an era before computers , so 'hyper-realistic' painters were very sought after. Most of the color images you see during the interview are not photos but paintings. He was part of several 'Styling workshops', for different brands. He was often tasked to draw prototypes (like the Heuliez that beat Le Mans speed record) or concept cars. It's a bit long but worth it, part of French automobile history . You can activate sub-titles and translate automatically. At one point he tells the story of people trying to order concept cars that they believed were photos of existing cars ! If you have the patience & the time, you have there a piece of automotive history. Take care and keep up the good work. Have a great day! ps the images are incredible! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/otWgeLx7x720qYk.html

A motoring journalist friend of mine, in Australia had a Kremmer 935 turbo in the 1980’s. It was a street legal version of the 935 Turbo. We went for a early morning drive down on the South Coast of NSW, while we were having coffee, the constabulary knew of our activities, he came over to our table and asked if we had seen any low flying jets about, nodded and turned away. Point taken we had a normal drive back to his house

I started watching one of your videos every now and then about a year ago. At the time I thought, oh dear, another one of those typical Americans who are only interested in what's happening on their doorstep, but luckily I was completely wrong. I like your enthusiasm when you discover new things, and I like that you are so open to new things, especially when it comes to motorsports and cars in general. I think there is still a lot to discover, especially from the old, wild motorsport days. keep it up Ian, you really come across as very likeable and of course I've subscribed to your channel now, because I'm also discovering new things or rediscovering things, such as this Porsche that I already knew, but had somehow completely forgotten over time. However, there is one Porsche that I will remember forever, and that is the 917, what an icon, what a sound, a relic from really wild times. I think cars look a lot slower on video footage because the camera pans or zooms in or out when recording, and there aren't as many reference points on a race track, like e.g. buildings, so the eye or brain perceives the speed to be slower than it really is. Best wishes from Germany!

After the success of the 935K on the racetrack, in 1986, Porsche decided to start giving to customers the option of installing the slant nose with pop up headlights instead of the traditional fender mounted headlights on their 930 911. It was called Flachbau and is quite a rare conversion to find these days.

Fun story, the 1979 24H of Le Mans had the 935 compete with factory teams but also Kremer Racing (basically a tuner) had their cars on the field as well. There’s a very cool story behind that on the channel of Vinwiki, and truly a must to check out!

The 935 has been one of my favourite ever race cars since forever. 3.3 ltr flat six, twin turbo, over 800 bhp, in 1976!!!!! Thats twice the power of an F1 car of the time!! These things went over 200 mph on the Mulsanne at Lemans. Porsche had to pull all kinds of stunts to get it through homologation, my favourite trick is the rear window. The rules for gr5 stated that the car must use it's original rear window, but Porsche needed a different window for aerodynamics, so they just left the original window in place and fitted another over the top!!! Genius!!! Check out the Kremer K4, this was insane on another level, the final evolution of the 935 concept built by Kremer Porsche. So, the sound, this is due to it is a flat six, so perfect primary balance, it's air cooled, except for the later versions which had water cooled heads, so thats the whine you can hear, and the turbos softened the exhaust sound, although they are still very loud in real life from the outside. By the way, they had mechanical fuel injection too, no engine ecu!!!! Boost was contolled by the driver with a huge knob on the dash.

The Kremer team were based in Cologne. I think there's quite a bit of their legacy displayed at Motorworld, the motorsports museum at Cologne Butzweiler Hof. Right, Ian: Now you need to go and find pictures of the engine of the 935 to full appreciate the layout of the turbos. You'll see that, as it's a flat six, the exhaust manifold goes _straight_ into the turbo, one per each cylinder bank. Like, one foot of pipe between the rear cylinders and the turbo intake max! Just imagine what carnage this car would have brought to races if it had had a fifth or even sixth gear! The 935 _is_ a mind blowing and crazy exciting car indeed! 🤗 I wouldn't underestimate the impact the advantage in brakes the 935 in the first video showed makes, by the way. Light weight means less heat in the brakes, so they endure more and harder braking.

If you like "Moby Dick" take a look on the 917 the monster. It holds Porsche's version of Frankenstein in the form of the engine. They took two (2) flat-6, smashed them together into a Flat-12 and boosted the hell out of it. Some versions went up to 1.100 hp to the weight of 820kg. Holds some records still (and probably forever due to regulations) unbroken.

Just watched this clip AGAIN. I love you're reaction to the 935, Ian! By the way, the 935 started a flat nose craze among 911 owners in the 80s, with lots of them rebuilding the nose of their 911 to make it look more like a 935. And at some point I believe Porsche started selling flatnose 911 turbos, so you could get a 935 lookalike 911 directly from the factory! Also fun fact, while the ordinary 911s had 5 speed gear boxes, the turbo and the 935 had 4 spped boxes, because Porsche at the time simply couldn't build a 5 speed gearbox that could handle the power of the turbo! It couldn't handle the ordinary 930 turbo, so it could most definitely not handle 850 horse power from a 935!

Oh, those things were absolute beasts. Got to see them when I was a teenager, got to talk to some of the folks who drove them when I started working corners in SCCA. Watch the dude sawing at the wheel in the corners, they're an old-school Porsche 911 on drugs. All the weight's in the back. John Paul Jr. (tragic story, look it up) told me, "It was a weapon. You just nurse it through the corner, and then point and shoot." And yeah, I love Road America. Another of my club members from up your way told me once that it doesn't have 'frost heaves' because it gets so cold that the whole ground freezes at the same time. 🤣Also..some of the best 'track food' in the country. If you go, get a bratwurst, they're amazing. The actor Paul Newman loved road racing. He was a member of our club, won a couple of National Amateur Championships ("The Runoffs"). Placed 2nd at Le Mans with Dick Barbour & Rolf Stommelen in a 935 in 1979. Only thing Newman ever said to me about it was something like, '..yeah, after that, the insurance companies for the damn movie companies wouldn't let me drive things like that anymore..' Part of Porsche's success in racing is that when they developed a car, they'd sell more chassis to privateer efforts. Barbour was one of them. The chassis still survives, it's been restored to it's '79 Le Mans spec. Here's Gooding's video when they auctioned it off in 2016. Can't recall what it sold for. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fbuJqrd5ytK6lHk.html Oh, and "Hawaiian Tropic" is an old school '70s 'tanning oil'. I think they're still around, but sell sunscreen now. Big sponsor back then, and part of their marketing effort were those ladies in the skimpy bikinis. Highly sought for sponsorship around the paddock back then.. 😆 10:47 - Search for "IMSA Dekon Monza". Al Holbert drove one in the '70s, IIRC he won a championship in it. Main difference between Gp.5 and IMSA's "Camel GT" back then was that our races were shorter.

An amazing sounding car with an interesting story that I would suggest is the Peugeot 905, a group c race car from the early 90s. You can see how it developed to the 905 Evo bis and then the 905 Evo 2 "Supercopter"

The 935 used a 3.3L Type 935 twin-turbocharged flat-six engine which used a mechanical fuel injection system.

This car is one of the all time greatest. I could see some of them live in Monza, Spa and the Nürburgring, just awesome sound even at idle. First video could be Bruce Canepa. His is a hell of a driver. If the race track is only 1 h away, just visit a classic race.

Really cool Porsche and what a sound. For some reason I like really much sound of 5-cylinder Audis, all of them but group-B ones are just on other level... But maybe one reason is i had Audi 100 (5000 in the US) with only 2 liter engine and 5-speed manual with quite open exhaust... I really liked that sound and even my father said he have to wait and listen it when i was leaving his house... 😄 Yeah he likes sounds of cars too...

Anyone noticed the chain stretching and the suspension getting lower even without being on the road. I'm surprised by not watching Dyno parts flying and sparks everywhere. Damn!

There are only two adjustable features on the 935. The brake bias lever and the big boost knob. Sometimes you see the driver turning that knob on the long straight aways. If you ever want to see and hear another great Porsche, take a look at Bruce Canepa driving the doors off his 917K at Mazda Speedway. The 935 looks a bit odd with the spoiler because these are silhouette series cars, meaning it needed to look like a stock car, and derive from a stock (production car) car, but allowed fender flares. The rear spoiler couldn't be wider than the stock car. Very cool series overall.

There where many different manufacturers that competed in the same category as the 935 wich was called group 5 silhuette . The category lasted between 1976-1982 and in Japan until 1984. Chevrolet, Lancia, Ferrari, Toyota, Lotus, Ford, BMW, De tomaso etc where involved.

I remember banning the 935/78 Coupé "Moby-Dick" when we were playing Need For Speed - Porsche Unleashed game with friends in LAN parties (back in 2002 or 2003) because it was ridiculously fast. My love of Porsches undoubtedly began with that game and particularly with the 935 😇

There was the Kremer Porsche and the Georg Loos Gelo stable with famous racing drivers like Klaus Ludwig. 600 to 700 bhp from 2.1 to 2.3 liters 6 turbos topspeed 350 kilometers.. Those who find a 1978 Porsche turbo scary should run for their lives..

The Jaegermeister livery makes me wonder: Have you ever watched any 80s/90s DTM racing? Those cars just look MEAN! They have insane amounts of aero gadgets all over. Very "rubbin is racin" as well. (Most Euro racing frowns on that) I think you'd dig it. Kinda like the NASCAR of Europe, but on road tracks with insane cars.

You REALLY need to check out the Porsche 917/30 Can Am Spyder. Flat 12, twin turbo, made upto 1500 bhp in race trim depending on set up!!!! This thing ruled Can Am so much they had to change the rules to ban it!!! Mark Donahue was the only driver that could get anywhere near it's limits and said it was the only car that truly scared him!!!!

Porsche built a limited run 935/78 Moby Dick Tribute in 2019, based on the GT3 R Racing Car with GT2 RS Powetrain (700hp). There's footage from Goodwood Festival of Speed by Carfection here on YT (with Henry Catchpole). Probably not as cool as the original but certainly a mean machine as well.

Not sure if you’re familiar with the way Porsche gave their cars these numbers? All these cars are first and foremost, 911’s. As each new model was introduced the factory assigned them different “ model” series numbers. One of the most famous is the original Porsche Turbo. It’s factory designation was the 930. The car in your video was built for racing in Group 5 Sports Car racing, so it’s called the 935. There were several different versions of the 935 and one of the greatest versions were built by a company called Kremer Porsche. They put the “K” after 935. There were at least 3 different “K” Porsche’s. This car actually won the 24 Hours of LeMans in 1980. This car was built for high speed circuits! It actually beat the Prototypes at LeMans! It was also a scary car to drive. It had a pair of MASSIVE turbo that didn’t spool up until after about 3500-4000 RPMS. The car had to be pointed in a straight line or your life could be in peril. There was also a 934 Porsche that raced in Group 4… these cars were some of the most impressive and frightening cars ever! I used to race Touring Cars at MOSPORT in Canada back in the early 80’s and I would watch these cars warming up to go on track. You had to wear earplugs! My favourite livery is the Jäegermeister orange! Enjoy!

IIRC, Group 5 rules required certain parts of the car to be standard, like the roof. The headlights also had to be standard, but teh rules didn't specify that they had to be in the standard location. That is why the headlights are low down on the Porsche 935. You should definitely check out the Zakspeed Capri Group 5. There was also a Mustang for IMSA developed by Zakspeed based on the Capri. Other suggestions Ferrari F50 GT Ferrari 550 GT1 Ferrari 312B/B2 Lotus 97T/98T Ford Capri RS 3100 (Group 5) Alfa Romeo 155 V6 Ti DTM
