@@Pikashockdragon True, not a lot of people realize that. Ned talked about that experience on live tv the next week at Rockingham after Dale’s death. He also later said that a few year’s later that he also told Ned he would not speak to him or do an interview with him if he continued to feel guilty in any way. That interaction & what Dale Sr. told Ned ironically showed itself during the 1996 500 where during the last laps as Dale & Dale were racing for the win, you can here in Ned’s call absolutely no hesitation in cheering on his son while racing Sr. for his 2nd Daytona win. Dale Jarrett later said that Sr. was the first to congratulate him by inviting him, his wife, his mom & dad (Ned) to his house for dinner that week following the 500. Dale Sr., Dale & Ned Jarrett, how lucky can you be to have 3 such class acts and legends of the sport involved in 2 of the biggest moments in the history of the Daytona 500.

Earnhardt didnt wreck unser. That was unser's lack of experience not keeping it down in the middle lane coming off of 4 and earnhardt let the nose of his car get into unser. Unser must have missed the memo that dale never gave an inch.

@@ryanith2 Earnhardt fans always have their excuses. He never wrecked anybody. They just crashed around him by coincidence. Anyway, I'm sure Unser's lack of experience had something to do with it, but he'd won in so-called stock cars in IROC against NASCAR guys on NASCAR tracks, including Daytona and Talladega, where Indy Cars didn't race. So it's too bad we didn't get to see more of him in regular NASCAR races, as we did with AJ Foyt.

Actually, Al, Jr. might very well have driven in more NASCAR races if he hadn't signed with Penske for 1994, because Penske had bad experiences with several drivers that ran multiple disciplines back in the 1970s, which is why you never see any of his drivers cross over to and from NASCAR, even now. For instance, Peter Revson was going to drive Penske's #68 car in the 1974 Indianapolis 500 after Mark Donohue retired (and would have been one of the heavy favorites, given that Mike Hiss qualified that car on the front row at Indy), but he was killed in South Africa. Then later that year came Gary Bettenhausen's sprint car crash when he was driving for Penske in both IndyCar and NASCAR. That resulted in Bettenhausen being let go and being replaced by Bobby Allison, who also drove the three 500-mile IndyCar races in 1975. How did Allison's tenure with Penske end? By getting injured in a modified race late in 1976. One other thing about how Al, Jr. and Bobby Hillin, Jr. being eliminated in that crash on lap 157 that many people don't realize is that Al Unser, Sr. drove for Bobby Hillin, Sr.'s Longhorn Racing team from 1980-'82, and the Longhorn Racing cars may have been the worst cars Al, Sr. ever drove in IndyCar racing, and yet, he had two top five finishes in 500 mile races in 1982.
