I was a huge Gordon fan growing up living in the south, so I have a little insight on this. NASCAR was traditionally a sport based in the southeastern part of the United States. Most of the drivers were working class, and grew up racing on dirt tracks around the south. The biggest idol to these fans was Dale Earnhardt, who really carried the mantra of the "good ol' boys." When Gordon came on to the scene in the '90s and won his first championship in 1995, a lot of Southerners started seeing their favorite driver being challenged by an outsider (Gordon being from California, though growing up in Indiana). It was almost a clash of cultures, and they resented it. NASCAR was THEIR baby, so naturally they hated him. Rumors circulated among the trailer parks that Gordon was fucking his crew chief Ray Evernham, and he MUST be gay, because he had rainbows on his race car due to his sponsorship with DuPont. Not to mention his crystal clean cut image was a far cry from the stubbly and hardened looks of people like Dale Jarrett and Terry Labonte. More or less, people hated Gordon because he won and was beating everyone else on a weekly basis in the '90s. People started hating him less in the 2000s when he wasn't dominating like he used to and Jimmie Johnson was drawing everyone's ire, and towards the end of his career, people really liked Gordon because he was the last link to the "good old days" of NASCAR. Yeah, I know, tl;dr, but it still amazes me the rednecks that still carry this 25 year rage about Jeff Gordon and still calling him a faggot.
