Had he not got sent back to 18th after the big pile up and with no other causations, SVG would have blitzed the field by 20 odd seconds. He put 2 seconds on Haley in two laps. SVG is a master at preserving tires for a late charge. They talk about 16 lap fresher tires however only 7 of those laps were under green flag racing.

V8 Supercars have a locked diff too vs open diff for Nascar, making them more difficult to drive. Going in that direction it certainly helped him as well too. There's been a few international drivers go to V8SC events and struggle, Bordais, Villeneuve etc. Other advantage is that SVG is just a machine. He is used to going to new series and doing really well / winning. He's done rally, open wheels, GT, Endurance, dirt ovals. The field may not have realised the level of talent that was visiting.

Yes the cars are similar and yes you could make that argument. But he has had success in everything he races. Drift, Nascar, Supercars, GT Cars, Sprint Cars, Rally, iRacing, quad bikes, Open wheelers. Shane is easily in the top 10 race car drivers in the world. He is a born racer and every year will race in many many many race cars and have success. Short races, 12 hour races, 24 hour races, Daytona, Le Manns, Spa, Bathurst. He is anyones worst nightmare. If he goes to Nascar, I don't think for a second he wont be competing for a top 3 finish within 3 years.

Honestly the way the NASCAR media have tripped over themselves to explain the “advantages” Shane had over the rest of the Cup field is far more embarrassing than any performance difference between him and the rest of the field in Chicago.

He didn't have to learn how to drive on the left. He has driven quite a few left hand drive cars such as Lexus at Daytona 24, rally cars, and many GT3 cars.

SVG is an Elite driver ... Watkins Glen would be a Sunday drive for Shane ... He's already raced there ... He would do the same on any road course America has to offer ... Go see what other categories he has already done and Won in ... Its all on KZfaq ... Ovals wouldn't be hard for him to adapt too ...

Shane has very good tyre management skills, racecraft above the level of the majority of other drivers. For eel and toe shifting, look how smooth Shane was in braking compared to Hailey who was on a bucking bronco.

Heel toe down shifting is standard practice to rev match engine speed and wheel speed, in manual race cars everywhere in the world, except America it seems.

Yeah that sounded weird to me. Plus the lowkey no ignition cut up shift sequential, open diff (guess it works for cornering) no pit lane limiter… but I guess it keeps the series competitive and organic

I think that technique is lost in the US now. 30 years ago, Ricky Rudd used that technique in Road Course races.
@fasterout777
@fasterout777 Жыл бұрын
Small correction, Supercars DO NOT use "paddle shifters"... they use a nearly identical sequential shift transaxle as NASCAR. In fact, one of the approved suppliers of the NASCAR transaxle is the Supercars supplier.

Yes, the option was there to add it for this year but thankfully the teams said NO -- these guys dont seem to understand that his clutch braking saves the tyres, makes them last longer with less tyre chatter.
@nameless1873
@nameless1873 Жыл бұрын
@@maffrose it screams volumes to me if all these guys so called professionals in their field including the drivers if they don't know anything about the heel and toe and advantages of it plus the lines you run into and out of a corner because of it amongst other more technical things. Not to mention how hard it is to do period and also effectively and efficiently. He is also has drifting experience so he can go pretty hard at doing it. Keeping revs high also minimises milliseconds - seconds in acceleration reaching that higher speed and all that time adds up.
@senorbart
@senorbart Жыл бұрын
Supercars I’m sure have an electronic throttle cut on the way up the gearbox so you flat shift up but they heal toe down shift to lessen potential compression locking into corners which would be necessary with the locked diff they run in Supercars. The NASCAR I believe you have to lift and shift. Heal and toe should be less necessary in theory as they have an open diff but obviously Shane found it to be beneficial and used the technique because he can.

Exactly he was more at a disadvantage than anyone else the only advantage SVG had was he knows the lines he has to run in a street race but then again they all should, all racers are taught cornering and race lines aren't they? all that technical stuff Or has driving in circles dumbed their senses down.

There is a Mark Larkham interview with a Kiwi podcast here on YT where he explains why the heal/toe technique does matter regardless of the clutch - it is designed to have the engine "rev" higher to avoid the engine braking impact that would otherwise occur.

He’s driven plenty of LHD cars and won or had really solid results. He’s done WRC2 got a podium, driven plenty of GT3 cars around the world and won plenty of races and a championship. He’s even done dirt track racing and sprint cars and been rather successful. The bloke even jumped into an open wheeler something foreign to him, he started dead last and won that race. As SVG has said if you have something for me to race i will race it

The nascar drivers are good at what they do, but they should be thankful that there weren’t 4 supercar drivers in the race. SVG was perfect for this race, but add Scott Mac, Jaimie Whincup or any one of the v8 winners in the same race, they would have forced Giz to stretch himself and then they’d have waltzed off into the distance. Not because they are better, but because they do these races all the time!

I think his pit stops were slower than grade 1 teams as well, and he got turned around abit on pit road. Although we lose him to Supercars he gets his opportunity in the big time. I would like to see that. Nascar drivers are tough and resilient, they'll get it worked out with this fantastic Gen 2 car.

Bit late to the party. Oz here. One of the differences I noticed is NASCAR drivers are charging hard for a lot more of the race compared to supercars. Supercars have quite a bit less rubber so the tyres have to be looked after or you'll have none. In supercars there'll be a charge at the start and around the time of pitstops and a charge late in the race. This background combined with Shane's heel and toe braking would give him more tyres and brakes left late in the race. Would be good get drivers to race downunder but be warned its fiercely competitive. Was a great race; congrats to all involved.

SVG disadvantages: Wrong side of car - spatial awareness (big), shifting with opposite hand, different settings and familiarity, new team and rules, new to car and characteristics, pile up, pit strategy. SVG equal with field: Same conditions, new to track. SVG advantage: Skill and road race experience. All should know: race lines, how to drive in wet, how to conserve tyres, have the balls to put the car close to the wall, how to overtake.

Nah you guys are just not up with the play here, it seems to me your making judgements on things you're unfamiliar with, the comment that was actually made was Shane has 6-8 years racing experience on street circuits, not that your drivers are 6-8 years behind! street circuits are not new to Nascar all be it without the concrete canyons, the circuits shane has raced on are completely different, they have chicanes to slow the cars on long starights, they have curbing on most corners & descent run off areas at the end of fast straights, now Shane was in an unfamiliar vehicle which is totally different to a V8 Supercar, they generate aero differently, they develop power at different levels they have completely different shifiting characteristics and he was on the opposite side of the car so everything was different on top of that the whole oprganisation is different, different rules, different words for what is being talked about, different pit stops and so much more so yeah, your drivers just didn't get up to speed fast enough but they certainly had many advantages over Shane, in the end he did an amazing job which is par for the course in almost every vehicle he's driven and there are many, he's a freak as a driver and what you witnessed is just a master class in driving, it's just that simple.

SVG's prep in the week leading up to the race on sim and discussions with various people and in the race itself still learning about the car ie sitting on wrong side braking with wrong foot gear shift wrong hand under pressure in a Nascar cup race with the best drivers all around you. Then figuring it all out and hitting the gas and passing 18 cars to get to the front wow absolutely amazing..... I have no doubt that all the others were learning the track on the run however they will need another run in 2024 to bring it .
