When you think about different levels of NASCAR racing, you probably just think of the big three: The truck series, Xfinity, and Cup. In reality, there are currently 11 NASCAR series racing worldwide, and there have been nearly 30 in the history of NASCAR. They’ve held everything from regional modified divisions to open-wheel leagues. Today we’re going to take a deep dive into a series that isn’t talked about nearly as much as it should be, NASCAR’s Convertible Division. Despite only lasting four seasons, it has had a lasting impact on NASCAR and affects it until today.

It was in the Convertible Division that what I deem as the most bizarre race outcome happened. In the 46th race of the 1956 season Curtis Turner managed to win a race by surviving in the race while all other competitors retired (due to crashes or mechanical failure). Race was red-flagged as the very last opponent crashed out.

They ran convertibles at orange show in San Bernardino. NASCAR sportsmen division in the mid 60s

Minor correction: There were 21 convertibles in the '59 500, not 20. There were essentially three qualifying races that year: The top 20 finishers in the Grand National qualifier got the inside row from 1st-39th, the top 20 in the Convertible qualifier got the outside row from 2nd-40th, and a 20 lap non-point "consolation race" was held for those who didn't finish in the top twenty in their races to set 41st on back. The one convertible that didn't make it in during their race was among them (Ken Marriott if memory serves). It was actually supposed to be 60 cars, but someone didn't show.

I actually own 3 convertible diecasts. All three were teammates, but Curtis Turner isn't that version. The 2 that are teammates are Fireball Roberts and Joe Weatherly.

Quick correction, that 1959 season, Richard Petty didn't actually "drop Down" to the series, he got his start in it that year, that 1959 Daytona 500 was his first race, and it was in the Convertible division.

It was his first race in the #43, but he'd already made 10 Grand National starts before the 500. He did run a convertible race the day before his Grand National debut in '58 though.
