I was actually at that race, it was a historic race !

First I want to say, Rest in Peace John Andretti. Long time NASCAR Winston Cup driver John Andretti passed away after a 2 year battle with colon cancer. You were a great, clean, and fair racer and a great, polite, and just all around, great guy! Please keep the Andretti family in your prayers NASCAR fans. Ok so, the grey ghost at Daytona in 1980. This was Buddy's most proud win. You can guarantee that, after Buddy Baker joined CBS and he joined Ken Squire and Ned Jarrett to call the races and the Daytona 500 every year on CBS, Buddy Baker would always bring up his win in 1980 and it was the fastest Daytona 500 run. And after the implementation of the restrictor plates, if the Daytona 500 had a 3rd caution flag, Buddy would always say, that caution right there should solidify my race winning record for at least 1 more year. LoL Also, RIP Buddy. You were the gentle giant, great racer, great commentator, and a great and kind person. We miss you!

This was a beautiful race to watch. The car bodies are beautiful, the race style is a forgotten gem, enjoyable, not predictable, the sound is amazing. Daytona looked and felt more like Darlington stylistically with the pace and design motifs. Bring this back.

I always find amusing how old nascar cars resembled family saloons and regular stuff. It was so fun to see them lapping around that fast.

I really like these races back in the day. These cars now and the rules to me is not racing any more. I grew up in a family of racing. These guys were true race car drivers. Thank You so much for the video.

Used to watch John Utsman race on dirt tracks every week. He was a friend of my grandfather and great uncle (who had a tire store across from Utsman's race shop). I used to pester him all the time by going to see his dirt track car, when I was little. Had no idea until seeing this video that he drove in NASCAR.

Donny had his share of battles & heart breaker's but still came home with victory's. One of my favorites...

We found the Satellite Feed version of the 1980 Daytona 500. Now we need Satellite Feeds of 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1997, 1998, and 1999 (it was formerly there but it got deleted).

Took many years, but Buddy Baker got it. And at a race record of 177.602 MPH in the gray ghost.

@2:54:33 Baker gets psyched out as he is beaten into the pits by Earnhardt as the duo make their final stop. In "Waddell Wilson - Men Behind the Wrenches" both Baker and Wilson recall that stop. Wilson knew that one can of gas was just barely going to get them to the finish and recalled leaning into the window and telling Baker not to go until all the gas was in. Baker described himself as being like "a caged animal" just itching to drop the clutch. He leaves early. As it turned out Baker ran out of fuel at the flag.

I’m old now but was young enough to enjoy these races and drivers back then.I miss those times.I wish I had a Time Machine.

When Dale's Daytona 500 curse really began. He was only guy who could run with Buddy that day.

It was absolutely ridiculous how good that 28 car was in the bottom of the track and was able to stay wide open, when everyone else's cars were sliding up the track and having to lift. That #28 Ranier Racing Grey Ghost was bad ass in this race. As long as Buddy didn't have any issues in this race, then nobody was going to beat that 28 car.

80 cars tried to qualify. NASCAR could never imagine that today...

I fell in love with the sport watching this style of racing, which I suppose is why I find it difficult to be entertained by the demolition derby style of pack racing that exists today. I stumbled onto this post because I logged on to see the highlights (lowlights?) of the 2020 Clash. I shook my head at the seemingly endless crash-filled attempts of a green-white checkers. I watched the 12 minutes of Clash coverage on YT and that was more than enough for me. Then I put this on and wished I could see every race from 1980. That championship battle between Cale and Dale that year was a good one.

Buddy Baker was a bit like a real life Ricky Bobby. He sure loved to go fast.

Fun fact: the same two cars are on the front row for this 500 as there was the year prior (1979). The next time this would occur would be 1995-1996 with the #3 GM Goodwrench and #28 Texaco Havoline cars. The 28 cars had different drivers both years, Dale Jarrett in 95 and Ernie Irvan in 96.

One thing to note. The voice-over parts from legendary CBS Sports voice-over man Don Robertson were, for some reason, left out, likely because of sponsorship (and possible broadcast company) concerns. He did one at the very beginning of the broadcast, one at the very end of the broadcast, and one around the midway point of the race (the one for the midway part of the 1980 race came just after the green flag came back out following the caution for the Marcis/Yarborough incident).

I just watched this today. I started to become a NASCAR fan in 1986 so I had never seen this race. After watching it, a couple observations and thoughts: 1. Amazing that about 80 cars tried to qualify for the race. Of the 42 in the race, 22 were Oldsmobiles. 2. Those cars still looked stock and didn't look aerodynamic at all. So I guess what they lacked in aerodynamics they made up in horsepower. 3. The frontstretch grandstands are so small compared to today. 4. No pack racing so cars were spread out. No crash that wiped out several cars. 5. A lot of cars had little to no sponsorship on them. 6. Even though it was only his 2nd year in NASCAR, Earnhardt was great driving from 32nd at the start to the lead. He had just signed a 5 year contract with Osterland that paid him 6 figures annually. 7. No speed limit on pit row so it seemed strange to see cars flying though the pits. 8. No commercials but when they went to commercials the cameras stayed on the track and the announcer's mikes were open. During those times, Ken Squier the lead announcer was practically directing the broadcast! Looking forward to watching more in preparation for the 500 in about a week!!!

A lot of people requesting the 2005 Daytona 500. It’s crazy to me & quite frankly I would love to see it, but if it were to happen, it’ll most likely be produced in 4:3 & not 16:9. Which sucks but it is what it is 🤷🏻‍♂️

Interesting that they were still running 1974 Mercury Montegos as late as 1980.

People say the racing now is BETTER, closer finishes, maybe, but the Old Races like this were better. The cars look more like cars, the drivers were not a bunch of young kids, these drivers had EARNED these rides over years not months. I also think the commentators were more descriptive, was like "Watching" Radio.

After trying for so many years and have it slip between his fingers the year before Buddy really deserved his Daytona win. He then passed the curse to Darrell Waltrip, then after of course it was passed to the man himself: Dale Earnhardt

Bonnett (34th), Parsons (33rd), Yarborough (23rd) and Bobby Allison (18th) all failed to complete 90% of the distance due to a variety of problems. The race itself was mostly a duel between Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip, which went for the #88 after the #11 ran into mechanical trouble. Behind DW, it was Earnhardt, Richad Petty, Millikan and Bill Schmitt in the top5 with Childress, Labonte, Bill and Don Whittington and Ronnie Thomas completing the top10. · The 50-mile Clash included 12 cars. The safety car never showed up and Dale Earnhardt narrowly outclassed Neil Bonnett. · Buddy Baker won the pole position for the Daytona 500 for the 2nd year in a row, this time at a bit over 194mph, with Donnie Allison also getting in the front row. · The 1st Duel was marked by several crashes while the 2nd one only had one multi-car accident.
