In the NASCAR community, there is a debate over what is the sport’s unluckiest car, and what really makes a car unlucky. I believe the unluckiest car in the sport’s history is the No. 28 for Robert Yates Racing. The 28 team could never secure a championship. Not only this, but because of the tragedies that occurred with their drivers Davey Allison, Kenny Irwin Jr, and Ernie Irvan, many in the industry actually believe this car was cursed.

The White/Black/Gold Havoline 28 is one of the all-time best paint schemes. I loved Davey. I was a 13 year old Alabama country boy when he passed. I will never forget that July morning when they announced it on Sportscenter.

People really don’t speak of Davey’s 92 season in its full context. Yes he had 5 wins but on the flip side of that it was a complete feast or famine season where he either finished very well or he totally crapped out and has a serious lack of consistency. Furthermore I truly believe that he suffered at least 1 or more concussions that season due to wrecks like the ones he had at Poccono and in the Winston.
@RobertoCarmona13

It's NASCAR, in NASCAR you just can't be fully consistent... It shows that Davey always gave it all and went for all, it was all or nothing for him and never gave up! That's what great drivers like Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt or even Kyle Busch do. Davey loved racing and in that matter he was very consistent. If he wasn't he wouldn't need just a top 7 in the final race to win the championship.

The reason Davey changed the paint is because NASCAR made him. The reason was the scorers where have a hard time picking up the car in the corners and back straight away. So in defiance Davey had the car painted black with day glow orange numbers. He was going back to the white and black with day glow numbers but Texaco loved the black color scheme.

As someone who was watching every race back then, let me tell yall that Havoline Thunderbird was one bad ass ride, particularly when McReynolds took over as Crew Chief because they essentially became a championship team overnight. Other than Dale's #3, the 28 car was pretty much the car that everyone looked for every week during that time, then when Rusty went to the Miller Genuine Draft deal with Penske, they were the 3 fast black cars every week one of them was in contention for victory if not all 3. I'm a diehard Chevy guy BUT I did root for Davey particularly during the 1992 season cause most figured since Dale was having such a sour year that it was Davey's title to lose. That was a sad day at Atlanta that November when they lost the title, all due respect to Alan & also that was King Petty's last ride BUT I think everyone was looking forward to seeing Davey finally hoist that first long awaited Winston Cup trophy. I thought it was truly ironic that Irvan would eventually take over the 28 car after the loss of Allison. Irvan REALLY showed just how strong that car was in 1994, you know he was the season's True Value Hard Charger Of The Year Award winner despite missing the final 11 races of the season. And NFJJ is wrong, Irvan took over the car with 9 races remaining in 93 & won 2 of them one at Charlotte & the other at Martinsville. He returned to the team to drive at the end of 1995 in a Havoline sponsored car numbered 88 which would be switched to Dale Jarrett in 96 & Irvan would return to the 28. Yes the 28 car itself never was able to win a title BUT luckily Robert Yates Racing finally did get one with Dale Jarrett in 99, an unlikely one at that cause when he was initially announced to drive for Yates, I also thought it was a bad move but Jarrett ended up being the teams most successful driver. With how goofy these cars look now, I would not want to see the number on any of them....

The #28 Texaco Havoline Thunderbird was probably the most iconic cars in NASCAR history other than the #3 Goodwrench Chevrolet Monte Carlo or the #43 STP Plymouth/Pontiac. I was a huge Ernie Irvan fan and the days of Irvan, Earnhardt, Jarrett, Martin Wallace and all those boys were in my opinion the golden age of NASCAR. I miss those days. It’s sad to see what it has become today 😔

There's quite a few cars in NASCAR history that could be considered cursed. The 28 in Cup is certainly one of them. I'd also consider the 37 Timberwolf & 38 Great Clips cars in the Busch series as cursed. And of course there is also the infamous Whelen curse where any Cup driver who drove that 31 car in the Busch Series ended up injured... except Dave Blaney.

@@SebrystianVettel In order: Mark Green - Original driver, was there for 4 years (Only 2 full-time), never won, only 1 Top 5, far & away the unluckiest of the 3 Green brothers with the other 2 being Busch Series Champions, & then had only 1 other top 5 the rest of his career. Kevin Grubb - Replaced Mark Green, was there between 1999 & 2001, never won but did come close with 6 top 5, but his career (& later his life) spiraled after leaving... It's a very sad story... 💔 Jeff Purvis - Replaced Kevin Grubb, was there for the first 12 races of 2002, got a rain-shortened win at Texas which was his only top 5 & top 10 for that team, but a savage crash at Nazareth essentially ended his NASCAR career. Kevin Lepage - Took all but 3 of the rest of the 2002 races after Jeff Purvis got hurt, got 2 top 5, but was irrelevant the rest of his career... not to mention he invented "Lepaging". Elton Sawyer - In what would be the last starts of his entire racing career, he ran the last 3 races of 2002, only mustering a best finish of 20th... Now he's working with NASCAR for some reason... David Green - Took over in 2003, 3 wins, 11 top 5's, 21 top 10's, but only finished 2nd in points, 2004 was a down year with 0 wins, 6 top 5's, & 16 top 10's. David Green then moved to the main Brewco Motorsports car, the 27, as Timberwolf left after 2004 & the 37 was shut down. All those years, all those drivers, so many being fond of the paint scheme. Yet it has only had 4 wins in total; It's first in a rain-shortened race, & the other 3 in a miracle championship effort that went for not... And basically all those drivers had sad or horrendous luck after driving that 37 car.

One clarification regarding Ernie Irvan's departure from Robert Yates Racing: he didn't leave so much as he was let go. The short version is that Irvan wasn't the same personality-wise after the near-fatal crash and continually alienated Texaco, doing things like not thanking them in his 1996 banquet speech, and showing up nearly two hours late to an anniversary dinner in 1997. Midway through the '97 season, Texaco had enough and essentially told Robert Yates, "it's him or it's us." Irvan's contract was up at the end of the year, so Yates decided not to renew it and brought in Kenny Irwin.

I liked Ernie but looking back once Davey died he screwed Morgan Mcclure over when he wanted his release. Yates actually offered the 28 car to Rudd FIRST but he wanted to start his own team. (for the record not a good combo). while i was feeling sorry for myself and trying to figure out what to d o to get through work scholarship as i'd been told if you can't work u can't stay, ernie was fighting for his life. monday some of us went to the local diner as a get together/ get to know everybody thing. and saw the headline. and i just about was sick. and thinking again when does this nightmare end? if as a fan i was feeling this way i can only guess what robert, larry, adn the boys were feeling. i gotta say i was NOT an irwin fan. i thought he got the 98 truck ride very badly, hadn't really done as well as the previous guy but now he's a cup guy replacing my man irvan? i felt bad, as i should, but it wasn't the same.

Wonder why Larry left Brett's team after 4 races. Idk he was with Brett till this video. Kenny Jr was one of 4 drivers i think that died of a fracture to the skull. Blaise Alexander (local driver), Adam Petty, and Sr. Blaise's death was the last death before the haans device was enforced for all drivers. and the safety barrier at the tracks.

Robert & Larry started talking about him becoming the car chief of the 28 towards the end of the 1990 season. This was after he, Larry, had a few conversations with Davey about it. Larry had initially accepted a deal to start the 91 season as the car chief but he changed his mind not long after because of loyalty to Kenny & King Racing but after a few sour runs with the 26 car to start the 91 campaign & at the same time, Robert Yates had fired Davey's crew chief, the 2 got together again & this time were able to work out a deal & the rest as they say is history...

@@aaronthomas6155 no driver did die in the 28 car with RYR... Kenny Irwin Jr. had left RYR when he lost his life... By that logic, the 3 car with RCR is more unlucky because 1 driver lost his life and another nearly die... RYR and the 28 car were very succesful with several victories like Daytona 500 and Talladega 500, but in this video says they were unlucky because they had no championship, by that logic, the 11 car with JBG is more unlucky...

Davey's accident had nothing to do with the race team. How did Kenny's accident have anything to do with the team? Your logic is flawed. This number has has 76 wins and 300 top 5's.
