It should be no surprise Pepsi has had a strong history in NASCAR, especially with its beginnings in North Carolina. The PepsiCo company has sponsored various NASCAR Cup Series drivers such as Darrell Waltrip, Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne, and Dale Earnhardt Jr through its Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and Aquafina brands. It has also quenched the thirst of millions of NASCAR fans throughout the years. Myself included. However, as of recently, it has been evident Coca Cola is killing Pepsi in the cola wars and the soda wars. It’s not even close. Therefore, today it’s time to go over Pepsi’s history and just how they lost the soda wars.

Reports are, Coca-Cola laughed Bill out of their offices at the beginning. So Pepsi it was. But a couple of years later, Pepsi's ad budget changed and they weren't able to spend money at Daytona and out of loyalty, France kept their signage at the track and Pepsi returned the next year bigger and better than ever, despite Coca-Cola begging to come in with stupid big offers that France laughed back at. That continued with France Jr. and when he died is when Coke finally got into Daytona.

I work for Pepsi and it's sad to see how they've slowly gotten out of the sport. The investment they made being the sole sponsor of the NFL tied up a good bit of their advertising budget. *You're also completely right about the 2016 Dewscision being rigged. Baja Blast definitely was the most popular flavor, it outsold Pitch Black in my market about 5 to 1
@NRF_Productions
@NRF_Productions 3 жыл бұрын
I think Pitch Black was destined to win from the beginning. Mountain Dew intended to add Pitch Black as the new primary flavor from day 1 and they brought back Baja Blast for its traditional summer release. They weren’t gonna let it win and risk losing business for Taco Bell.

Another side note: While Evernham Motorsports signed a sponsorship deal with Mountain Dew in 2001, Bill Elliott was still part of the Coca-Cola Racing Family. Because of this, Coca-Cola had to use a different font for the No. 9 to represent Elliott in Racing Family promotional materials.
@evanwilliams6406

They used his old number font with the 94 team that he had in 1999-2000 just without the 4.

iirc, at the Cup race at Dover in 2004, Elliott still had a deal with McDonald's and Coke for his own team, and so in order to run the race with McDonald's, he had to drive using his own equipment instead of Ray Evernham's 91 car. Mickey D's/Macca's would join the Evernham crew the next year if I recall (also while sponsoring Gary Weisbaum's Busch team)
@TheLocalLt
@TheLocalLt 3 жыл бұрын
@Evan Williams yes they also used it on his McDonalds and Coca-Cola C2 Cup rides in 2004 in the 98, which was an Evernham car relabeled as a Bill Elliot Racing car and using that font. This being due to the Evernham deal with Pepsi.

Yeah that! If they don't have Pepsi, I'll have water before I'll drink Coke. And if they don't have that, I'll do without! I've never understood these places that'll give "exclusive rights" to a brand (eg, restaurants that sell only Coke), rather than seek to provide the goods that'll satisfy more of their customers. Serve me what _I_ want, or lose my business -- simple as that.

This reminds me a lot of the interesting story of the Soda Wars having, arguably, ground zero in Pittsburgh. As of this video and comment, Pittsburgh is the only place where all 3 major soda brands are represented by 3 or 4 different sports teams in a given city. The Steelers have Pepsi, the Pirates have Coke (both changed after the 2014 seasons of each team, breaking a near 50 year partnership between Coke and the Steelers), and the Penguins have Dr. Pepper/7Up/RC. This came about after Dr. Pepper/Snapple bought the rights out from Coke prior to the 2009-10 season in preparation for the opening of what is now PPG Paints Arena.

When I was in high school and went to away sporting events, I always judged the school of what they had to drink. I was a heavy mtn dew drinker, and if they had Pepsi, I didn’t care about the final outcome. If they had coke, I was hoping my school would get the win. Don’t get me wrong, I will drink Coke at like a McDonald’s or Denny’s. But what made it a little ironic was my high school switched from Pepsi to coke my junior year of high school. I tried to voice my complaint about this to the superintendent, however the superintendent was my grandmother.

Pepsi lost because they put all their eggs in a few baskets. Jeff Gordon & Dale Jr were all they had. They did sponsor races and tracks, but they failed to branch out. Coke may not have had the biggest star power (except for Tony Stewart), but the had the recognizable Coca-Cola racing family, and they have spread into any crevice they could find to sponsor. Once Jeff and Jr retired, Pepsi had nothing left, and Coke had an empire. Pepsi can only blame themselves for this. They are the superior soda, but their marketing teams didn't capitalize on the NASCAR market to the fullest

Entertaining video for the most part, but when you cut to the on camera stuff, you really need to be more expressive in your motions. You're very stiff and statue-like, your voice sounds excited, but your body language isn't. Definitely need to work on that. But again, an otherwise very well done video, very entertaining and informative!
