Today we’ll took a walk along the famous Naschmarkt in Vienna - probably the most famous food and produce market in the city. Here you can find more than 120 stalls, bars and restaurants offer fresh food and specialties from all over the world. The abundance and the great variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, fish, meat, cheese and other delicacies from different countries and regions attract not only the citizens but big crowds of tourists, wanting to see and experience this colourful and picturesque place, situated between the Linke Wienzeile and the Rechte Wienzeile boulevards (which are basically the left and right sides of one whole boulevard - Wienzeile - separated by Vienna River and Naschmarkt)
I found that the predecessor of the Naschmarkt was a milk, fruit and vegetable market mentioned for the first time in the second half of 18th century (1774). The "sales stands" were in great demand and often bought at great expense by the dealers. As a result, they often stayed within one family for several generations. With its role as a supply market, the Naschmarkt received an appreciation from 1819.
The market was relocated for short periods during the years due to urban reconstructions in the area but from 1902 on, Naschmarkt was definitively based on its current location. The permanent market stalls on the Naschmarkt were set up between 1910 and 1916 and the external appearance of the market was not changed regardless of the several renovations being carried out in the 20th century.
