I grew up in Nassau. My Mother is a native of Nassau Bahamas & met my father in Texas while attending college in the 80’s. I lived suspended between the culture of America & the Bahamas. I spent most of my adolescent years living in Nassau. Although I love the Island & most of my close relatives are there I would not choose to live their again. However, it makes for a beautiful place to visit❤️

Great video of a time when we can see how Nassau looked back then mindful of the fact that the 1950's in the U.S. black people were still getting lynched...although we had our share of racism it was not nearly as bad as in other places and eventually we overcame that as well to become the richest independent Black Nation on this planet there is much to be thankful for but more work to be done to bring more people up the economic ladder....God Bless the 242

+Jaleesa Moncur yes, for the gubment them, and there friends, croonies, lackies and compatriarts---for the other 98% of us however, a near infinite layer cake. You see, we're at the very bottom of the layer cake and the top 2% are that tippy top that continual pours fresh layers of 'cake' (see: crap) onto us. A chap said to me the other day, "No Worries fellow citizen, for within 15 months we shall be rid of the villains in parliament. " "Nay, fellow citizen," I countered; "For by that time it would be too late." For you see my fellow Bahamian, While we wait our leaders Master bates atop all our wealth...leaving the debt for us.

I was born there. A white British subject of her Majesty. How can anyone looking at the crime infestation of 2017 say that independence and Pindling were good for the place? Places like the Caymans and Bermuda have a quarter or fifth the murder rate and they are still British possessions.

@fiyabun Remember, this footage was made in the 50’s. At that time the mindset of a white person was MUCH different than that of one today. It wasn’t until the 60’s, after the Martin Luther King had done his speeches that the opinion of most white persons towards blacks began to change.

♦️Tip to cruise tourists traveling to the Bahamas♦️ We’ve been to the Bahamas many times, always as a stop on a cruise ship. Early visits include us renting a limousine for the day to tour the beautiful island. As time went on we found the local people near the port less desirable. If you were not pickpocketed you were at least harassed. Pick-pocketing became so common we would not bring enough cash with us when we got off the ship to buy more then sundries. Eventually, we would not rent a wave-runner after learning they would target tourists, rent the tourist a wave-runner, then claim the tourist did damage to the wave-runner, the same damage they blamed on the previous renter, and the next tourist renter. We were on a cruise where a tour group of Segway riding tourists were robbed at gunpoint. This horrific event was heavily discussed on the cruise forum CruiseCritic. The tourism focused scammers made this island undesirable and unsafe to us. Next month we go on our next cruise, a cruise where we had one goal, avoid Nassau. The cruise is taking us to other ports including Grand Turk and the Dominican Republic but this specific cruise has eliminated Nassau from their schedule. We are really looking forward to this cruise. Oh, my tip to cruise tourists with a stop in the Bahamas...enjoy your day by staying onboard the un-crowded ship.

As one who's traveled extensively, I've experienced robberies in other countries, including Dominican Republic and Jamaica. Robbery isn't something I'd wish on anyone, but how ignorant it is to single out one nation is sad on many levels. Hope all of trip be and enjoyable one. Move with caution.

Tureano Johnson, no question, crime can and does occur elsewhere. I’m sure I am biased due to personal experience. We choose to travel yet avoid the Bahamas due to personal experience. In one month from today we start our next cruise vacation and we will go on tours at each stop. We are looking forward to it.
