I'm a full time RV'er from Arizona. We often camp in the Arizona national forests. Unfortunately, many of our favorite go to spots are turning into homeless camps (correction: drug addict villas) because the US forest service is not enforcing the 14 day limit. I often see RV's just left in the forest where the owners just leave the RV and return on weekends to their own personal camping spot. I also see spots where a dozen or more squatters have sequestered a camp site and with make shift tents with trash build up and gear appearing to have been there for months. Of course the natural recourse is to just close to due abuse. But hey, when all it takes is a friendly visit to remind them of the 14 day limit. And if they don't call the local sheriff and a tow truck for more encouragement to obey the rules of the forest.

I’ve camped in two locations in coconino where individuals have left RV’s. I think the first one I saw was actually abandoned but at the other location there were literally 6 or 7 towables and 5 th wheels that were left there. One or two truck would show up on the weekends. They even left a couple of Rzrs parked next to them. Ridiculous.

Imagine that. Or should I say 'who didn't see that coming'? Mr. Golf instead of doing his job (and golf is the only time he steps on anything but a paved/tiled/carpeted surface) thinks the out of doors is only good for golf and allowing others to rape the environment and getting his palm greased in the process. "Forest Service? Nah, we don't need them, they just get in the way of people ruining the planet for a buck!"

Yep! I've seen the same thing. I have Corp of Engineers RV park on a lake on the Oklahoma/Texas border that I use to love! I was recently there and shocked by how many of the RV sites were being used by tent campers. And many of these tent campers had at least 8-10 ADULTS in each site. These sites are $22/night. So basically each person was paying about $2 per day to stay there and they got water, electricity, bathrooms and showers. Where else in America can you live for $2 per day? And apparently the park was putting no limit on the number of people or the number of tents in each site. I was shocked! There's a 14 day limit, but they can come back in a week, which they all do. There has to be rules/laws but there also has to be enforcement. This has gotten completely out of control!

There are a lot of dispersed camping areas in the Appalachians that have been closed or restricted due to messes left by campers. Just sad people think is more important to be slobs than to protect the land.

There's quite often a big difference in campers and bums. And if you're a camper who trashes a site then you become a bum as well. But a lot of people are trashy and irresponsible in their everyday life and they carry this over into their recreational life. A lot of folks camp who can't afford big trips or resorts, etc... and then think affordable without supervision means they can be the same slobs they are at home. Some think someone else will come clean it up Others pretend that "because I pay taxes" I shouldn't have to clean up my mess. Remember, the U.S. has a population approaching 340 million people. Even if only a small percentage are bum campers or just actual bums that's still millions of trashy people out there. It's like the fools who won't put a shopping cart in the corral because "they aren't going to tell me what to do." It's not about that. It's about not having carts running into peoples cars or blocking traffic when they roll out into the lanes. But fools only see it to be about them. And some of them get mad when a cart scratches their car. Well, too bad. One of your partners in lazy selfishness should have put the cart away.

Yeah, when things went from a small percentage of full time travelers to van lifers, bus lifers and car lifers not because they were travel lovers but because they were homeless, addicts, or just bums who didn't want to work then the problem got worse very quickly. As I tell people this is a country approaching 340 million people so even if the percentage of bad apples were just 1 % that would still be 3.4 million bad apples. I suspect the percentage is higher than that so we got a bad orchard on out hands.

Agencies setting environmental, financial, health care and insurance protections over the past 50 years, allowed the middle and lower class to live a decent life. Wages has been consolidated mostly in the Wealthy 2% so now expect protections to disappear as well with Chevron gone. So now being without a home will be a crime in cities. I don't see how that can help any campers in any way. I often catch a sleep night in transit in a city I'm passing through. Maybe someone can explain this better to me. What they don't have, especially in the popular crew cabs, is cargo capabilities that can handle the tongue weight of the longer bumper pull trailers. We are a Boondockers Welcome host site on a dead end dirt road in the country (but close to several smaller cities) where folks don’t tend to stick their noses in other peoples’ business. That said, we do not charge for anything (the BW program doesn’t allow this anyway) and we do not accept donations of any kind. We are not running a business and so we do not want money, or anything of value, changing hands. I want to make sure I can tell our township or county, with a straight face, that we are not running a business, should it ever come up. On the other hand, we are under no obligation to offer RVers a place to spend the night (up to 5), so very easy for us to just stop doing so if it comes to that.

Unfortunately the problem that has arisen is that too many people in America want to live for free. City streets, public parking lots, city parks, etc., all have to be PAID for by someone. The locals whose taxes dollars pay for these places, don't want people from out of state coming in, not paying taxes, not paying for parking, and not paying the local campground. I'm sorry to disappoint so many people, but America was not built by Vagabonds and Nomads. The reason that we have all of these beautiful places in this country is because of the people who put in the work to build it. From what I see in my area and what I hear from friends, we are on the verge of some pretty major closures of public land to camping. Homelessness and the social media influence of overlanding has resulted in massive traffic and littering in these places. As always, humans ruin a good thing. RV parks will be the only option going forward.

Closures are complete BS. BLM does the same thing in California. If they can’t enforce 14 days how do they enforce 1? If too many people are speeding government going to take my car? It’s called enforcement. Lazy solution!

BLMs biggest issue is they have 1 law enforcement ranger for every million acres of land. Or put another way, they're policing 1/8th of the entire US landmass with a force smaller than the town of Rockford, IL.

I think the truth of the matter is ‘they’ do not want us on NF/BLM even the state and national parks anymore. They want us inner city in stack and packs, and wild lands left to the elite. It’s getting crazy!

The more places that allow camping, the more places that the campers will trash and ruin.

That would be similar to making the national speed limit at 10 mph to save more lives. Not practical
