There's a lot more to making a champion than training yourself physically. As the most decorated female swimmer in World Championship history, Natalie Coughlin explores the importance of including mindful practice and relaxation into the rigid, challenging and rewarding training regime of an iconic athlete.

I'm 32, started martial arts. I don't think about whether its easy or not doing that at age over thirty. I'm just doing it and I soon realized that it makes me happy.

She is on the board of US Swimming and appears to have a lot of insight into the way young girls in the sport are chewed up and spit out by overly ambitious training programs that lead to injury and mental fatigue/frustration. So why hasn't there been any change in the way US Swimming continues to drive these girls headlong off the cliff of uber-competitiveness and constant comparison to other swimmers. I'm not just talking about who wins on race day. There is a perpetual ranking against the entire country in the form of the power-point system, as well as the IMX. The big clubs rise and fall by their power-point accumulations. It's a rare club that says to a swimmer, hey, you should take a day off. I sincerely hope that she has success with the recently announced Trident pro team and that she will also be able to gain insights into the post-Olympic world of sport to understand how different it is for men and women after they retire from swimming at the elite level, as well as how other countries do better (or worse) than the USA.
