Among other things, Natalie Dessay performed (very realistically!) the funny "Cat Duet" by Gioacchino Rossini with French singer Camille.

Attrib. to Rossini, but actually written by Pearsall. Extremely funny. Actually I was expecting a "cat-hiss" from Dessay at the very end.

Once the point is made it gets tedious. We would never guess from this what Dessay can do as a singing actress. Listen to Schwarzkopf and los Angeles to hear how this can be just as funny (actually, funnier) but still with a great deal of varied artistry and musicianship.

The well known performance you are talking about ia a very first-rate one and the best ever recorded or, I think,ever produced. It combines a deep musical taste with a depurated vocal technique, not to say an obvious hilarious result. You are completely right. This one is boring and quite uninteresting: they both are not of Elizabeth or Victoria's stature. Beside this, can anybody explain why are they singing with those close-to-mouth microphones?
