In 1961 “West Side Story” was released in theaters and considered an instant movie classic. The movie would go on to win 10 Oscars, including Best Picture. The movie was adapted from the 1957 “West Side Story” Broadway production, a musical inspired by William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” with: - a book by Arthur Laurents, - music by Leonard Bernstein - lyrics by Stephen Sondheim - choreography by Jerome Robbins In 1947, Robbins, Bernstein and Laurents discussed collaborating on a contemporary musical adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. - Except that the plot focus on the conflict between an Irish Catholic family and a Jewish family living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, during the Easter-Passover season. - Maria had survived the Holocaust and emigrated from Israel. - The conflict was to be centered around anti-Semitism - the Catholic "Jets" towards the Jewish "Emeralds" When Robbins opted to drop out, the 4 Jewish Gay men went their separate ways, for almost five years before collaborating again and making major changes to the plot focus on the conflict between poor 2nd generation white Americans vs recently arrived & 1st generation Puerto Ricans immigrants on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
