An extra Pierre song for Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, written in 2020.
Loosely based on the First Epilogue from Tolstoy's War and Peace.

My finger holds the imprint of your ring
Every line holds a memory
You and I
The songs we used to sing
But now the sky is overcast
And the streets are grey
A daytime moon hangs pale and cold
Sometimes it feels like all the stories have been told
But this song’s not over just yet
Stars and moons rise and set
Then rise again
We shall have epilogue
After epilogue
It’s a simple life
On the face if it
Though you and I have both let ourselves go a bit
Thicker and older
As the bitter winds got colder
But I saw the laughter of life in your eyes
As you handed me a plate to be dried
With you sometimes such simple things
Keep me warm inside
And this song’s not over just yet
Stars and moons rise and set
Then rise again
We shall have epilogue
After epilogue
I am running empty
Frightened by the demons that still tempt me
Struggling with the jokers
Juggling in my mind
But I know I’m not a bad man
I know because I see me in you
You reject the dark
You reflect the light
In you I see the good in me
In you I see the world in me
And this song’s not over just yet
Stars and moons rise and set
Then rise again
We shall have epilogue
After epilogue

a couple of notes: - the beginning piano is exactly the same as the last song of comet!!! - the “no one else” chords near the middle, representing natasha and her love for pierre and vice versa - he said this on the stream, “epilogues upon epilogues” is a nod to war and peace’s two epilogues - “i am not a bad man” may be a reference to “did you love that bad man?” in pierre and natasha - the little part at the very end is the same as the background piano for “pierre and natasha” :)

I don't think Dave will ever understand how his music, his creativity, his drive has changed my life. It's changed so many people's lives. I wouldn't be able to give all my thanks in one comment but I can give just two. Thank you for this song. The closing of Great Comet absolutely crushed me but hearing this song performed by you made me choke on tears. Thank you for giving me such a wonder in this time of distress. My other thanks is for the creation of Great Comet as a whole. You inspired me to write my own musical and in that, I've found how god damn hard it is to do a musical, a sung-through musical, A MUSICAL BASED ON A BOOK, but you did it. You created the most amazing musical stemming from motivation and drive and love and respect for your craft. Thank you Dave Malloy.

absolutely gorgeous. the way that all of natasha and pierre's past themes have been reprised here (pierre, no one else, a lil dust and ashes i think, pierre and natasha) is so genius, a perfect marriage of themes. also, "i know i'm not a bad man/i know because i see me in you/in you i see the good in me" will make me cry forever. such a great moment of character development for pierre. his depression doesn't magically disappear, but instead he learns to manage it over time, which feels very true to life. thank you for this great piece of work dave, we all appreciate you! :^)

I am 19 years old during this horrible pandemic and I am truly terrified of what may or may not come my way, as I am sure many others are feeling. I am absolutely not ready to be an adult and have been in such a creative rut. All of that may have seemed super irrelevant but simply put, Dave gives me hope and his art is everything to me and so many people. This song alone makes all of the confusion and fear worth it. Time to overshare on the internet. I often come back to listen to this when I’m feeling hopeless or when I’m in a bad depression slump. It’s comforting in a way I don’t fully understand, but I think it’s because the tears it brings helps to remind me that I can cry and feel emotions other than sorrow. For that I’m very grateful

Thank you so much for uploading this. I love your works dearly. I've been a fan since Ghost Quartet, and it's astonishing how much your music makes me feel. Your works put the magic and tragedy and soul back into music and musical storytelling--they make me feel startlingly human and seen. I really don't even have the words for it. This made my day. (One of my cats is actually named Pierre--he looked so pitiful when we found him on the street, and the name kind of stuck. He's growing up to be a sweet, noble, and wonderful boy.)

I want to say that not only is this song beautiful as others have said, but to me this is a far more beautiful depiction of their epilogue than the actual Epilogue I. I loved Great Comet for how it so wonderfully captured the meaning and energy of that part of the story, and I love you more for so wonderfully extracting the simple beauties of living a simple life and growing old with love. It's definitely the gist of what Tolstoy was depicting but the way Natasha was handled (and _especially_ Sonya) made it instead a depressing read to my modern eyes.

i was just thinking about this song again and wanted to comment what i didn't before. it's a lovely song and the other comments are valid in singing its praises, but i want to thank you so much for cutting it. one of the things i loved about great comet was it didn't pressure itself into letting you know that yes, pierre and natasha end up together. if you know war and peace, sure, you know it happens eventually, but in this version, in this moment, romance isn't the most important thing. it's the hope they give each other and the kindness pierre shows her without the expectation of "winning" her. and after what natasha just went through, barely just having matured past running off with the first man who could promise her immediate attention, you offer us an interaction between her and a man that isn't leading to her falling into his arms immediately. it would have been so easy for you to include a romantic happily ever after, but i'm glad you didn't and you let the beautiful moment it ended on shine without having it get drowned out by a chorus that knows what the future holds and wants to assure you that nothing is uncertain or unfinished. if that makes sense? it's almost 5 am so i hope this isn't coming off as rude because it is a nice song i am just eternally grateful it isn't in the show. you made the perfect call.

There are so many wonderful lyrics in this song, but the one that always gets me is "But I saw the laughter of life in your eyes As you handed me a plate to be dried, With you sometimes such simple things, Keep me warm inside." Not only does this imply that Pierre and Natasha do dishes together (which makes me want to cry for some reason), it also shows that sometimes it is the most simple things that can trigger the most emotion. PLEAS PUT THIS IN SPOTIFY!!
