Pangolins are believed to be the most trafficked mammals in the world. As the four Asian species of pangolins have dwindled, poachers are increasingly turning to the African species to supply the trade. In this short film, meet the bold Nigerians who are fighting to protect this gentle and vulnerable creature.

The small animals, whose scales are coveted for use in Chinese medicine, are now among the world’s most trafficked mammals. To learn more about the pangolin, read on here: on.natgeo.com/2wvqVu6

Daniel Giummule you speak like every other country on earth is a saint and has never done anything like this. Every country in the world has contributed to some inhuman acts towards animals. To individually state a claim like yours, is biased and shows your cultural discrimination towards that country. Shame on you indeed. The world would definitely be better off if people like you don’t exist.

National Geographic According to the article that National Geographic wrote, “Pangolins are eaten as bushmeat in western and central Africa and by some indigenous groups in South and Southeast Asia. Their parts also are used in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa as traditional medicine. At least 67 countries and territories on six continents have been involved in the pangolin trade, but the shipments with the biggest quantities of scales have originated in Cameroon, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Uganda, according to an analysis by Traffic.” Sure, Chinese medicine does use them, I don’t see the mentioning of other ethnic groups who also does this as well.

Niko Gambino Bigotry and racial profiling is a fact. I wouldn’t go as far as ruling that the world would be better off without China - that’s your own personal and political bias. Every country has contributed to some substantial damage to Mother Earth. By hating on one country specifically, won’t do any good to prevent animals from extinction. Whereas making rules and awareness is a more effective approach. As I posted above in this comment string, China is not a sole contributor to this creature’s near extinction. It is stated in their published article on this story. I don’t know why National Geographic failed to be specific about this issue, which makes me ponder that politics “maybe” a factor to it. Also, please provide evidence to your statement that “Chinese medicine has killed off/extinct 100’s of species.” If you can’t be rational with your arguments, you can “F off” yourself. Otherwise, you’re just embarrassing yourself by being a racist. Having a president that is a bigot, doesn’t acknowledge climate change and wants to build a wall between USA and Mexico doesn’t seem to be much better than communist China.

@5:00 - if you listen closely, the traders are only asking for 5,000 naira (that's about $16/£12) for each of the pangolins. Sure, it's a lot of money to them - but it's incredibly small when you consider how endangered pangolins are (and illustrates just how much they're also being exploited).

One side of the problem is reducing demand, but the other is allowing local people to earn money in honest ways, and making food more affordable. Yes. I know national geographic that pangolin is the most traffic mammal species in the World. I also know that 8 species of pangolin live in Asia and Africa... Africa have 4 species of pangolin and they are vulnerable to endanger species.. And Asia have 4 species of pangolin and they're endanger to critically endanger species.... But thanks to Nigeria for saving their important life.. And yes corruption is biggest threat of African wildlife, wild animals and environment...... China and Vietnam and some south eastern Asian people stop now eat pangolin meat... This is so dangerous.. And I heard that some parts of United States also illegally eating pangolin and some types of animals meat.....

@@rachaelbale8759 Thank you for this amazing and touching video. I truly appreciate how you pointed out the traders perspective. Too often we like to make them the evil of the animal world, but they wouldn't exist without the demand. The different perspectives and the overall tragedy taking place was very touching and heartfelt.

How would people do that? The locals already know that they can gather an income by selling pangolins. They're desperate, and I doubt they're willing to release their only source of income. A better way is to offer more job opportunities to those people so they can live off another source.
